staging-rapup.kinsta.cloud attended a private listening for Nina Sky’s The Musical (Polo Grounds/J Records) in Santa Monica, CA earlier this week. Natalie and Nicole were on hand to play tracks off their sophomore album, which is scheduled for an early 2009 release.

The second time around, Nina Sky set out to make it clear that they’re not one-trick ponies. The twins showcase a more diverse sound on the follow-up to their 2004 self-titled debut, working with producers such as The Runners (“Ain’t Easy”), Ryan Leslie (“The Real”), Cool & Dre (“All Alone”), Grammy Kidz (“Curtain Call”), and DJ Toomp (“One Night”). The girls wrote the majority of the album in order to give it a more personal feel. The result is a mix of the music they love, from hip-hop to R&B to pop to Latin.

As Nicole danced around the conference room, Natalie sang the lyrics to the Salaam Remi-produced “On Some Bullshit,” which included, “I’m on some bullshit / Fuck what you heard.” Travis Barker can be heard playing drums on “Vacancy” (Neo Da Matrix), and the sisters prove they can really sing on the Cipha Sounds-crafted “Chapters Closed.”

While the album features heavier hip-hop-influenced beats, Nina Sky did prescribe a dose of pop with a jam called “Doctor Doctor.” “Can I get a hit of you?” they playfully ask over the Big Reese and Jasper (Mariah Carey, Lloyd) production.

A video for “Curtain Call,” the first single featuring Rick Ross, will be shot within the next month.
