Akon on Whitney Houston: ‘She’s Straight ’Hood’

Akon and Whitney Houston

She may have sold over 170 million albums, singles, and videos worldwide, but Whitney Houston hasn’t lost her roots, according to Akon.

“That’s my girl right there,” the “Beautiful” singer tells Rap-Up in the Summer 2009 issue. “She’s straight ’hood, but at the same time she can switch it up.”

He expressed his admiration for the 45-year-old singer. “I love Whitney, man. She’s really down-to-earth. That I can say. She hasn’t lost her roots.”

Akon recorded two songs with the diva, but it’s unknown if any will make her new album. One of those songs, “Like I Never Left,” leaked to the Internet last year. “After that song leaked, they pulled that back. That was officially supposed to be a single for her as well. But we’ll see what happens.”

Find out if Akon’s contributions made the cut when Whitney Houston releases her seventh studio album, I Look to You, on Sept. 1.

Akon talks about working with another musical legend, Michael Jackson, in the Summer 2009 issue of Rap-Up, on sale now.

I have seen stuff like This Is My Life back in ‘92 to see what Whitney is really like beyond those sequined gowns and wigs and makeup. But she was originally middle class ‘hood since Dionnne Warwick’s success allowed them to move into a rather good single-family house when growing up. She never lived in any projects and went to a PRIVATE high school. I just hope Whitney can reverse the musical pendulum from rapping/synching back to REAL singing, and give us REAL music that’s been MIA since 1999!

To me, Whitney is anything BUT hood…I dunno. I’m pretty sure she lived a privileged lifestyle growing up, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Whitney will always be Diva. Crazy, yes. Straight hood? No.

Whitney just announced her new CD is called “I Look to You.” I can’t wait! Right now I’m reading the autobiography of Kola Boof, the lady who was Bin Laden’s mistress and revealed his obsession with Whitney. It’s mad fantastic book! So much good stuff in here. I just know Whitney is going to be the COMEBACK queen with this new CD and don’t forget that R. Kelly wrote the title song “I look to You.”

First off I love Whitney and will always. I’m just kind of tired of all this uncertainty and speculation. I mean we been patient and waiting for years. How they already got a countdown to the album release and we ain’t got no single yet? I just wanna hear 1 song!

Any way I’m definitely getting the album! I just wanna hear some music!

I HOPE she’s not gonna pull a Mariah on us and start singing about Touch my body. Cause that’s what I was thinking when I read the title “she’s straight hood” NO NO NO!! Whitney you have a great reputation, don’t ruin it by going down the E=MC2 route mariah went down, you’ll soil your DIVA reputation for good like she has. I agree with Michael. I hope whitney takes it back to real singing and shows some of these talentless wannabes what it means to be a true vocalist. It’s about time we had some actual SINGING talent up in here.
