Beyoncé on MJ: ‘I Wanna Be Just Like Him’

You may have seen this already, but we thought this was one of the more touching tributes to Michael Jackson we’ve seen so far. Beyoncé dedicates “Halo” to her hero, Michael Jackson, while performing on tour in Atlanta last week. She intros the song with a video of her going to see the King of Pop in concert as a child.

“That was the night I saw my hero perform for the first time. When I left the show, I said, ‘Mommy, I wanna be just like him,’” she told the crowd. “We miss you. We love you. And we thank you for all the memories, Michael Jackson.”

that was nice indeed but part of me just doesn’t buy the sincerity. i feel like she’s claimed so many ppl in the past were her idols/heroes (i.e. barbara streisand, etc.). it sounds more like she’s jumping a bandwagon with everyone paying tribute to mj (deservingly so) but yeah, that’s my opinion.

Well my opinion is that she is sincere. As a matter of fact, she openly stated she looked up to MJ years before—in the 2006 World Music Awards when she presented him the Diamond Award; also the Bootylicious video was done in his honor which included dance moves from Thriller.

I agree that many have jumped on the bandwagon saying MJ was their idol, but do not include Beyonce as one of those. And to The Prophet, Beyonce was famous way before she met JayZ, remember Destiny’s Child—and MJ also had his father “controlling” him.

@ ron.e- you can have a million heros, you don’t have to have only one heo, I have plenty heros. So don’t get ahead og yourself and still speaking of hero she said ‘barbara stresind is her career idol’ cos she did everything in the ent.industry and was successful at everything, she’s won every friggin award and Bey aspires to be like that.
And also its obvious you don’t no Bey,cos if you’ve being following her career you would see the influence from Micheal. I mean going to his concert at just 5yrs old says it all. So don’t get ahead of yourself boo.

Great performance Bey, she’s killing the game! Giving all em chicks a run for their money! Hahahhhh

Bey. Has many heros and she’s not ashamed to say, you don’t have to have only one hero, I have lot of heros, you could be inspired by a lot of people, she’s looked up to so many artist and always pay her respect cos they paved the way for her.
So ron.e… Chill and don’t get ahead of your self!

Well if she truely was inspired by him she would have done a real tribute performance for him on the bet awards. don’t give me that 2 day mess. she is a singer face with last minute things all the time. If she really wanted to honor him she would have stood on stage with mj clothes in front of a mic singing mj songs. but no it was about promoting herself now she wants everyone to by this act. I pray for this generation

I agree you CAN have more than one hero or inspiration…I sure do! I remember seeing that footage of her going to the MJ concert and I think that was Kelly with her.

I thought it was a beautiful performance. I still get sad thinking about his death.

People seem to forget that Beyonce is human. Just because she has fame and money doesn’t mean she has no feelings. MJ was obviously her idol and inspiration…he was that to a lot of other artist too.

    To “Shame”
I disagree. That was in fact a too short time. She’s not some kinda wedding or party singer who’s on call 24/7 for some special occasions! You expect something grant and give them too little time to prepare? That’s not fair.
I think she did a good job at BET. if she came out and did Single Ladies then you could blame her.
And BTW, she’s still on a heavy tour schedule. I was surprised even she still performed after hearing the news of Michael. She did and she was great

where is the problem with having more than one idols? there are a lot of people you can look up to, so why not?

the problem is, beyonce cant do something without getting hate. it doesnt matter what she does, some of yall are always hating

i’m not the biggest fan of hers too, but she is a great performer…and she is not just a good, she may be not the best dancer, but she can dance and if she is on stage it’s her’s.

For all I care, people could keep hating, it only makes her stronger and who she is today!

She’s always been an MJ fan PLEASE!!! Haven’t you seen the bootylicious video when they did a little bit of the MJ dance during the songs’ bridge, in fact all of D.C. have always been MJ fans. And YOU CAN have more than one idol…and Dan what you said is sooo true, no matter what she does, there’ll always be people saying she’s fake like they know her oh so well.

i seriously say bullshit. she is jumping on the bandwagon. yes it may sound sincere but honestly u should have done it on the bet awards. she a performer she had three days to come up with something. and honestly she just dedicated halo to him chnaged some words and add new ones. she could have easily done at the awards. i just feel she is not sincere because she has spoken ill on the family in the past and him and now she dedicated something to him. every family has a trouble in the childhood and no one but michael and the family should speak about the problems. so she is a hypocrite. good perform and i guess she can act now.

and do agree she can have more than one idol.

Well you damn near there Bee!! lol She’s the closest thing we have to MJ today when it comes to entertaining/performing. No one will ever compare to MJ, besides James Brown, but it’s nice to see the few artists with at least half as much talent and expertice as MJ. Beyonce being one of them.

How many times are we going to go thru the betawards issue. Beyonce already rehearsed I’ll be there/halo for the awards and at last minute, Stephen Hill of bet said No and switched it up, they decided that she should do ave maria- and if you listen closely to the words, it was dedicated to Micheal, with excerpt from ANGEL.
Don’t say what you don’t know, and she never said anything about Michael, she’ll never do that, maybe she referred to he’s father but not Michael, get your facts right and stop blabbing!

    Bey Rules!

beyonce is not jumping on the bandwagon do some research before you speak.she has always did tributes to Michael just youtube her performing him and jackson 5 songs long before his passing.i remember when she gave him the diamond award because other artists declined because of allegations against him.

  24. listen

there’s no question whether beyonce is being sincere or not. she has footage of her going to see MJ when she was a little kid – i think that says enough. for all those haters on this site, do something positive with your lives instead of bringing down genuinely good people.

You GO GIRL, really using one of ur best talents (acting) in actual life. I like that, but wasn’t she the one like saying she was raised with a silver spoon in her mouth and her dad wasn’t as desperate as Janets dad to force them & MJ into clubs &gigs. Its kinda disrespectful that she would say that cuz we all know the Jackson story & Beyonce is pure talent no doubt but I don’t buy her cheap 2€(cent) sincerity.

  26. #1Bey

And all those footage/proof is dumb cuz you sound so stupid that you needa “nick pick” her whole life in order to prove her viability, lol.

    [Reply]

  27. dan

and where is the problem that she said something about michaels dad? didnt you all do that? does that mean you have no respect for michael?

    damn, hate those double standards

she can see michael himself and what he achieved as an iconic….but does not have to like the story about his fame

Duh. She made that comment because of Joe Jackson. And I think everyone knows that he was an abusive parent who took advantage of his kids. That was a right on comment.

I’d made the same one myself as many people now! And ppl need to get their heads out their a**** when they make stupid things about her race interpretation. It’s 21st century, nobody cares bout what hairs you wear (except for ugly or boring ones). Has she ever worn black hair? Yes. Bushy one? Yes. So guess over it if she wears other types

I love this tribute and I am sure that he was honored for such a tribute as well.

@ twitter.com/R3trooutcas, its so funny that u would say that cuz u talk about her having so much talent & u say u don’t like it when people bash on a talented artist but both Rihanna & Ciara hav jus as much talent as her but here u r contradicting urself stating that either of them r b*tch’s & hav no talent. Aren’t u doing the same thing those “beyonce haters” are doing? Well obviously yeah so don’t b*tch cuz ur jus the same. Don’t throw things out if u can’t handle it yourself & Beyonce is great & I admire her for her tribute to MJ& I DO like all 3 artists but when psycho fans are being dillusional I wonder why I’m a fan but still no crazy is gonna stop me from being a FANatic!

Hey, Beyonce is a very sincere person. She really looked up to him. If you check in her single ladies video you would see that she got her dance move from him in thriller, which i loved. I think she’s the female version to mj. She’s damn good. I give her that, and to you all who thinks she did surgery, she didn’t. :P go check all her photos of when she was younger. They even said michael did surgery when he didnt.

I agree that beyonce is a very sincere person but HELL to the NO is she the female version of MJ, she’s more like the Tina Turner of today. Now Ciara is definately the female version of Michael Jackson. Check all her videos, you can most definately the Michael Jackson aura in her, not just one video like beyonce.

I agree Ciaras hot & of course she’ll never be like Mike, but she has that vibe he possessed more than anyone (any female, they’re so many male performers who embody MJ, but Ciara is the closest female similary to MJ. Beyonce is on her own, she’s an icon herself, I mean she’s been around for like what 10-16 years(idk for sure) & I agree that she’s truely sincere person

For goodness sakes can you guys let him be in peace I am so SICK of everyone trying to make her the next MJ if you asked me all you fans who are sayiong that never really appreciated MJ because if you did you wouldn’t be trying to compare her to him so bad!!! Michael is Micahel Beyonce is Beyonce and I don’t know about people jumping on bandwagons for MJ I’m sure that when all these artist were sad about him passing away they meant it others wise they wouldn’t have said it, but I will say that nobdy was close to MJ like his family and his friends McCuly Culkin, Elizabeth Taylor, James Brown, etc because they didn’t just meet him they actually had regular conversations with him and spent time with him they knew him on a personal level not just as a icon or legend, but MJ the person so I’m pretty sure they were more touched then any of these celebrities!!!
