Whitney Houston Has Grammy in Her Future

Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston better clear out more space on her mantle for some Grammys. If initial reviews are any indication, the pop diva is back on the path to Grammy gold.

Houston’s seventh studio album I Look to You, due Monday, is receiving high marks from critics including the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and Chicago Sun-Times.

“The best giant ballad is the Warren-penned, David Foster-produced ‘I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,’ an exhibition of battle scars that’s richer for the weary, injury-protecting quality of Houston’s vocal,” wrote L.A. Times music critic Ann Powers. “If she does earn the Grammy she’s virtually been promised for a song from this set, it should be for this one.”

USA Today’s Steve Jones rated it 3.5 stars out of 4, saying, “It’s loaded with tunes that are perfect for recapturing the magic that once made her a transcendent star.”

The Chicago Sun-Times’ Jim DeRogatis offered more praise. “The sound throughout is clean, modern, unfettered, and consistently designed to keep the focus on Houston’s singing, whether it’s on the moderately bouncing club tracks or the requisite ballads.”

The August 31 cutoff for the 2010 Grammy Awards nominations prompted Clive Davis to release the album a day ahead of its original September 1 date. I Look to You will now be eligible for next year’s ceremony.

Davis hosted a series of high-profile listening events for the album in July, which drew the likes of Halle Berry, Stevie Wonder, and Alicia Keys. The first singles, “I Look to You” and “Million Dollar Bill,” have achieved most-added status at radio, while the album is already No. 2 in music on Amazon.com’s Bestsellers list.

Houston has won six Grammys over her illustrious career, her most recent one in 1999. It looks as though the decade-long dry spell is about to end.

Ok I see the critics have weighed in and the news sounds wonderful. But honestly it sounds like everyone is going hard without results my point is this there have been good material released over the years and the grammys dissed many artists. It seems more like a popularity contest nowadays which to me is not a good look because at one time the grammys stood for excellence now its full of trash.

Whitney’s album is amazing! She should get a Grammy

and I have to kind of agree with you gee man. The most recent example would have to be Jazmine Sullivan who clearly should at least walked away with 1 of her 5 Grammy nods. Fearless was a masterpiece!

I do hope Whitney walks away with something. She definitely deserves it for this album. Whitney, Clive, songwriters and producers really came through.

…also I think her potential singles are Nothin’ But Love, Call You Tonight, For the Lovers, Salute and I still love Like I Never Left even though it leaked early.

and really hope they make a video for Million Dollar Bill!

This album was worth the long wait…so proud of Whitney!

she will win a GRAMMY not because of creating a great ‘comeback’ album, but because her being a ‘legend’ who has yet to be acknowledged by The Recording Academy. the reviews and hype surrounding this project is forced.

Great news Jay! Whitney shot the “Million Dollar Bill” video Monday August 24, 2009. I really don’t not what the concept will be but I saw a picture of her getting ready to go on set and she looked fantastic!

I cry everytime I read those old Billboard/Ebony/Jet issues online as well as reading her old tour programs, considering how talented she was in those days. I hope Beyonce doesn’t steal Whitney’s thunder here. This album feels more like a Beyonce album with a huskier voice.

Whitney is the GOAT. She broke down barriers for black female like MJ did for everyone. First female to debut #1 on hot 200, first female to have back to back diamond albums, she beat the beatles and elvis record of 7 consecutive #1 hits, highest selling soundtrack and single of all time, over 170 million sold, she’s influenced every vocalist from the past 15 years. She is the first female to break down those barriers and have success on a global scale. She is the most awarded female of all time. No other female is even close. I love Whitney. Welcome back.
