Rihanna Speaks Out in New Interviews

Diane Sawyer and Rihanna

Rihanna is speaking out publicly for the first time about what happened that unforgettable night in February between her and ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.

“This happened to me. … It can happen to anyone,” she tells ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer in a three-part interview airing Thursday and Friday morning on “Good Morning America,” and culminating on Friday’s “20/20.”

She also reveals that Brown, who plead guilty to assaulting her, once had her heart. “He was definitely my first big love.”

The media attention from the incident turned the 21-year-old pop star into a household name overnight. “I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears,” she tells Glamour magazine in the December issue. “That was the level of media chaos that happened the next day. It was like, ‘What, there are helicopters circling my house? There are 100 people in my cul-de-sac? What do you mean, I can’t go back home?’”

As for the infamous photo of a battered and bruised Rihanna that leaked online, she says, “It was humiliating; that is not a photo you would show to anybody. I felt completely taken advantage of. I felt like people were making it into a fun topic on the Internet, and it’s my life. I was disappointed, especially when I found out the photo was [supposedly leaked by] two women.”

Rihanna’s fourth album Rated R, due November 23, has already cracked the top 10 on iTunes albums chart based on pre-sales alone. Her single “Russian Roulette” is currently the No. 9 most-downloaded song in the digital store.

Its horrifying what happened to her. Its even sadder to use the incident to promote her music. To truly make a difference I would suggest she fight harder to get Chris Brown a harsher sentence.

She’s a strong woman because a lot of people would crumble under all that pressure. The whole world was judging from afar while she was hurting emotionally.

@Giselle, Exactly. People are being too ignorant to the fact that what was done to her was awful and most men would have to do time in prison. For people to hate on her and defend Chris Brown’s actions shows how backwards our generation is. Lack of morals and education have a lot to do with that. We’ve got to do better…. Chris Brown stans go read a book.smh

@tell’em, My thoughts exactly. Chris Brown fans are delusional. This reminds me of what happened to Janet Jackson at the super bowl and how everyone hated her, and it wasn’t even her fault.

Yes what happened to her was devastating. Surviving an abusive relationship does not make her a strong woman. The grim truth is that this happens everyday to women all around the world. The righteous thing on her part would have been to show some kind of fervor to get Chris Brown a tougher sentence. But she didn’t. At least that way she could/can be the strong woman who encourages other women to get out of this situation. Rather she used the incident to “try” and propel her celebrity, and so did Chris Brown.

At the end of the day who cares. We seem to be more interested in home girl’s abuse than our own friends, family members, or even ourselves. And I myself am guilty of that.
