Review Roundup: Chris Brown – ‘Graffiti’

Graffiti

Chris Brown turns the spotlight back on his music with his third studio album Graffiti, in stores and online tomorrow. Are the critics willing to give him a second chance or is the writing on the wall? Find out below.

Entertainment Weekly: A clutch of throwaway midtempo tracks don’t seem to justify Brown’s hasty return, and Graffiti hits a few genuinely cringe-y notes—among them, the icky female-orgasm outro on “Take My Time,” a lecherous slow jam better suited to low-rent lotharios like Pretty Ricky. B-

Rolling Stone: Chris Brown has made a bland, occasionally obnoxious, pro forma R&B album. Brown mostly ignores the elephant in the room, churning out punchy dance-pop songs full of club-ready beats and Casanova gestures. 2.5 out of 5

The New York Times: Two songs near the beginning, “So Cold” and “Crawl,” come off as thoughtful, even if they’re not quite mea culpas. In these moments Mr. Brown is pining, mildly apologetic. But mostly he’s moved back to the angular seduction numbers he’s made his specialty.

The Boston Globe: Brown could have simply made an album of club jams. But his decision to share his side of the story is also what perversely makes the eruptions of hurt, anger, and desperation interesting, if not necessarily contenders for repeat listening.

Houston Chronicle: Much of the success of Graffiti lies squarely on the lyrical content and production. And it might have worked—if Brown could carry the material with sheer force of talent. But given his limited abilities, much of the album never takes flight, instead recycling the usual slick touches and arrangements.

Chicago Sun-Times: Sometimes, great art is made by reprehensible human beings, and squaring the two is enormously difficult. Thankfully, that problem isn’t nearly as thorny when reprehensible human beings make art that is thoroughly mediocre and at times just garbage. 1 out of 4

Chicago Tribune: He poses on the cover like a futuristic rocker with a can of spray paint in one robotic hand and a guitar in the other, though the music isn’t nearly as radical as that image implies. Yet several tracks strike a more aggressive stance, a teen artist growing into manhood, and no doubt will sound fantastic on a dancefloor with a booming speaker system. 1 out of 4

Rap-Up’s Favorite Tracks: “I Can Transform Ya,” “Crawl,” “So Cold,” “Famous Girl”

WOW, now I wonder if we could take what happened in Feb out of the equation and then review the album for what it really is; great music.

These are extremely biased reviews. I don’t know if they have listened to his past albums, but they should really mention his growth. I cannot say that I didn’t see it coming, some journalists will give actual reviews of the MUSIC and others well, they get another opportunity to spread their negativity towards him.

If these reviews were genuine, which I very much doubt, then that would be accepted as their opinion.

You can feel some type of way about a person, but MUSIC SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.

Buy Graffiti Dec 8th and judge for yourself whether you agree/disagree with these reviews.

Wow they are so rude… I’m sure they gave Rihanna’s album better reviews… Why don’t they talk about how she came as an islander and changed her shit up to ROCK/PUNK music…? They shun that shit in the islands, she didn’t stay true to her culture!! I’m just sick of the bull… I wish everyone would get over it… Maybe if they let Rihanna beat his ass it will make things better? But I’m sure Chris has learned his lesson, the sad thing about it is that he has to carry this beating over his head for life.

Also on Famous Girl he apologize for Breaking out her windows, yet on Larry King Live he said the window breaking incident didn’t happen..What a liar

These critics have too much hate in their hearts to justifiably listen to his album w/o bias. I am feeling 95% of the songs I heard from the album. It’s a fusion of hip hop, R&B, techno/house, rock. It is mad experimental and I LOVE IT! It has similar themes as RR: lost love, cheating, regret, bravado.

    [Reply]

  18. tm

I wouldn’t been feeling a whole bunch of songs about redemption. I want the same fun loving stuff Chris has given his fans thusfar. He is still maturing and I can see him doing a song or two on other albums.

  21. jacq

the thing is that the album is kinda like a repeat of Exclusive, but not as good as second album. Outta the whole album, I love one song “Fallin’ Down”. but it’s true some of the album was better suited for a tacky Pretty Ricky LP while others sound like a Disney channel pop hit. I guess reviews were expecting some bare, hardcore solid songs dealing with the incident in the Feb just to show some musical growth & it would’ve been a huge promotion knowing Chris made songs about reality & pain & not “taking my time with her head down & ass up” with Tank.

I’m a Chris fan, but this album was a slight disappointment, but hey…THANK GOD FOR EXCLUSIVE! (That was my shit!)

    jah bless

  24. Pucci

I think i will hold my judgment until i hear the album… really, it does seem like most of the reviewers are biased seeing as how some of them reviewed rihanna’s album & gave it a stunning review… aside from that, maybe the reviewer just didn’t like it because its obvious that most of his songs from what i’m hearing are about rihanna, i mean who wants to hear songs that are consistently about someone’s ex girlfriend & an incident that happened 9 months ago? I’m getting sick of hearing about it & i’m sure everyone esle is too. O well, tomorrow will tell. but even then it’s still someone’s opinion.

Graffiti is amazing. The album shows Chris Browwn’s growth as an artist. All the songs are a step above Exclusive. For example, “Falling Down”, “So Cold”, “Crawl” and “Lucky Me” is showing his vulnerability and struggles, and sounds similar to MJ’s lyrical content. The songs “Pass Out” “I Can Transform Ya” and “IYA” are top notch production and high energy jammers. I agree that some songs were unnecessary but shows Chris Brown’s personality, like “Sing Like Me”, “Take My Time”, and “Wait”- even though “Wait” has awesome production and flow. But sex songs hasn’t really been in my taste anyway.

In conclusion, I do think the reviewers are being biased and unfair because of the February incident. But, we are all human, and this is a consequence of Chris Brown’s own actions. No matter how sorry we are, and no matter if God forgives us, man does not forgive so easily, and there will always be consequences for our actions. I have compassion and I am sorry for Chris Brown.

Chris Brown put out an excellent album. I just hope Chris Brown’s career can recover from the incident. I will be purchasing Graffiti on December 8th.

I think the critics are being biased also, but not all of the critics gave Rated R good reviews, I read an article where they actually snubbed her album. I don’t know what it sounds like, I haven’t heard it, but I go by my own opinion and not theirs. 44. READ THIS GUYS

By Tena on December 1, 2009 9:28 PM
This is the most stupidest s— I have ever read. Who do you think you are NY Tymes, PLEASE. Chris has apologize numerous time for his actions, he cannot go back and relived the moment, but like he said he can learn from it. Chris has not disrespect Rihanna in anyway. Whenever he’s ask about the situation he says ” out of respect for her he rather not talk about it”. No one made her ass get on national tv and put on a big act. If she really wanted to help young girls, she could spoken about the situation without getting into details, she did this out of pure hate. How can she help young girls when in every interview she’s talking about she want SEX! That’s why her album didn’t sell big. She was simply trying to be low down. Even though I don’t agree with what Chris did, I can tell he is very remorseful and sorry for his actions. Rihanna made her whole damn album disses Chris, Hell he’s allowed to have one song about her. He admitted he still love and care for her. Chris is taken responsibility for his action and he’s becoming a better man. To bad I can’t say the same for you. Yall tried yall best to keep him down. But what’s make Chris a real man is that he realize the wrong that he done, but he will not let one mistake hold him back from his dreams. And for any young people out there who happen to make a bad decision that doesn’t mean you have to give up on life or your dreams, learn from you mistake and keep on pushing forward. This is what you need to be writing, word of encouragement to help keep our youth stay focus. Instead you write bullshit like this that makes no damn sense at all. Where you in the damn studio when Chris was writing this song, so how in the hell do you know who it’s about. Just shut the the Hell up, yall people get on my nerves, you all are so damn negative, try being positive sometimes, you never know you may change someone’s life. You are trying to hard to dislike this brother, but what is there to dislike? He has talent whether you like it or not. Can your ass get on stage in sing, dance, act, flip, have millions of female streaming your name, I think not. This album is jumping!!! whether you like it or not, the album will sell bigg. GET OFF THE HATER-RAID! LORD FORGIVE ME FOR THE CURSING,BUT SOME PEOPLE JUST NEED TO HEAR THE TRUTH.

Wow, talk about holding grudges. They are just being biased as far as I’m concerned. I downloaded the album, and it’s amazing. He’s grown SO MUCH. I can’t say the same for Rihanna’s album…yes, her content has grown, but not her voice, his voice was also grown. So I’m definitely gna buy it. Reviews DO NOT equate to album sales.

I don’t read CD reviews until after I’ve listened myself and formed my own opinion. I won’t say I agree with all these reviews, especially just giving it one star, but I do agree with that fact that I don’t think it’s a good album. I was waiting to hear it, because it was being spoke so highly of by so many, that when I actually heard it, I couldn’t believe that this was the same album everyone was raving about. The only leaked track I could say I some what liked was ‘Sing Like Me’, and that was mainly becuz of the beat. But when I listened to the whole album I was expecting a great body of work to fall in love with, I only fell in love with one song, ‘Fallin Down’, I love that song! While I’m not a fan of the album, which means I won’t be purchasing it, I do wish Chris the best, and hope that I’ll enjoy the next project.

    @young black and gifted,

swear down, you’re one of the sanest people on the internet, and you get attacked for it. I’m not really sure what to make of reviews… they’d rather be cautious than give something 4 or 5 stars. Hence why they’re called ‘critics’.
Nevertheless, I’m not a fan of him but I liked some of his songs in the past.( Kiss kiss, wall to wall, run it, gimme dat- the typical ones but nothing to make me buy thy album. I probably won’t buy the album this time round, none of the songs except perhaps ‘crawl’ stuck out to me.
IMO, if you’re a hardcore fan, ur gonna buy regardless, if you like that type of music, you’re gonna buy it. People will like it, others won’t.
And , I understand the Rihanna comparisons to a point, people are looking to see how much of the past year he’s put into his music etc but his competition is more the Jason DeRulo’s, Jeremih’s and all the other young people like that.

How many people read reviews before they go out and buy a CD? I think the whole situation is sad and getting old. It happened it’s over, he said he was sorry, and he is paying rather the haters, critics, media, and judgemental people think so or not. This young man is very talented, we didn’t bless him with his talents, so who are we to try and take that from him. And all this about Rihanna is mainly people feeling sorry for her, yea I said it. It’s funny she said she didn’t see herself as a victim, she does not want to be the spokesperson for domestic violence, and she wants to focus on her career, nothing wrong with that. But, because Chris wants to get on with his life and career, people seem to have a problem with it, even these biased ass so called critics. Chris is not the only artist out there that has made a mistake and still been able to have a career. And not everyone is singing praises about Rihanna’s CD, I have not heard it, so I can not say what it sounds like. Everyone has a different opinion, but before I talk about it, I would listen to it first. Some people have heard his CD, some hasn’t, but I think it is wrong to judge it if you have not heard it, and you are forming your opinion on hate. What songs I have heard from the CD, I see nothing wrong, it’s different, every artist tries something different once in a while. I will purchase it, damn what the critics say, what the haters think, and what the judgemental ass hypocrites have to say. They all need to get a life.

u know what this is the most silliest CRITICS I HAVE EVER READ.. its obvious they are still keeping a grudge on chris for what happened with rihanna they hyped rihannas cd as “sad and dark, with amazing story” i mean ok fair enough on her album there was 1 song i liked which really made me shiver and that was cold case love because she is talking about the “incidence” it was an amzing song but was it worth buying the album NO! she wasnt that great 0 out of 4 to be honest, chris album on the other hand is also not as good, but his songs are definatley better than rihannas, E.G, movie, take my time, crawl, brown skin gyal, fallin down.. AMAZINNg songwriter very creative and thoughtful, all his songs have a meaning and shares a story about what happened and how he feels about the situaition which is the only place were he is able to throw his opion and not get any critism. Not the best but good, all i am getting from the media is that they want him to really FAIL!.. which is silly because he is a great artist i would hate to see him exit, i would rather see rihanna exit the music industry and takeover the fashion world.. thats how i feell. its just sad that we biased but numbers will speak i am not sure how is going to do, it could be Bad or REALLY GOOD because his fanbase is CRAIZYYY supporting..

Everyone who has hated on him in the last year is going to be in for such a big surprise when they tally about the foreign and Domestic album sales after all is said and done! These are your typical biased reviews and the opinion of a handful of people who have meaningless jobs when noone listens to it anyway.. If IT wasn’t for Chris’s success and downfall, they would have nothing to write about anyway.. So they can go fuck themselves as far as I and alot of other fans are concerned. I’ve never seen anything so one sided and biased in a long time! They should consider themselves lucky that the mistakesthey make aren;t in the spotlight everyday all day, and so should the people who hate on him and pray for his demise! Ya know we don’t support what he did wrong.. We Supprot HIs rehabilition. Its Career suicide writing biased opinions like this because it undermines the intelligence f the fans in the sense that the writer thinks were too blind to see that the entire write up stinks of Chris’s Incident! Get a fuckin Life, try again, and Good Luck explaining your review when this goes multiplatinum over the course of the next six months!

This album won’t even sell more than 50,000 first week in the US. The reviewer pin pointed it. This Album sucks ass. It’s their job to review, they get the CD weeks prior to release in order to do their job. Don’t blame them for reviewing it and getting paid to do their job. Chris Brown’s music stinks like rotting corpses. Maybe he should of just gone into hip hop. Hip hop artists don’t get much flack about their domestic abuses. Trying to hide behind the curtain of doing R+B Pop and Kiddie music won’t get this kid anywhere. He’s should just go back to rapping since that’s where he started.

@Vajra, Are you getting paid to be a hater, or are you getting paid at all? The critics may get paid for doing their job, eventhough they are not always right. They can not speak for everyone else, maybe for you haters that don’t have nothing else better to do but hate, a 24 hour job with no pay at all and any benefits.

The fact that some are calling “Graffiti” R&B tells me you didn’t listen to it. LOL! It’s far from R&B/Urban. It’s more R&B/Pop/Alternative/International feel.

His Urban fans are the ones that are having a problem w/ Graffiti. This album has way more growth than his previous. He took chances with this, which is what artists are about these days. So the fact that the “URBAN” ones don’t like it’s not surprising. I expected it.

To date this is his BEST album from productions, vocals, lyrical, and just all around is better.

ANd from what I just heared, he;s Number 1 in the R&B category on the Charts in several other countries already in just a day since then. So keep hatin and talkin all the shit you want! Because numbers don’t lie! And He’s number ten already on i tunes Main chart in the UK! In just hours of being released Give it a rest Bro! H’ll Sell Big in the U.S.! And to @Meli Graffiti is partially R&B, and thats what they have it under on the R&B charts. But your right! Its so crossover, its beyond belief! Listen to his new Song Graffiti. All the people that are agreeing with the critics are nothing but haters, anything they would have said bad about the CD they would have agreed. And wanting him to fail, people really needs to be careful about wishing that on him, do something with your own lives before you try and wish bad on him. Nobody is excusing what he did, he is dealing and paying for what he did, lots more out there doing worse including the ones that are hating. See that’s what a hater does, they are not doing anything with their lives, so they hate on people trying to do something with theirs. Chris has a right to go on with his life just like anybody else. I have heard tracks from the CD, to me Chris has grown as an artist and it is different, I like it. Critics or no critics, their fucked up reviews is not going to stop me from buying the CD. Keep pushing Chris, pay no attention to the hating ass people out there in the world without a life of their own.

This album is just like the critics said. If he would make music more like exclusive, (which his voice still sounds the same in), people as in critics would appreciate it more. It seems rushed and dosent flow together. In plus famous girl, even though I like the track, is very controversial and has offending lyrics about rihanna, (in my opinion love the beat) while rihanna didnt expose chris like that in her album. He will sell well though. People love him and dont care about what he did to rihanna. Thats how this world is… smh.

  76. When?

When is the hating going to end? The people that is saying Chris Brown’s CD is bad and agreeing with those critics are nothing but haters. The critics are being biased because of what happened in Feb. almost a year ago, get over it and move the hell on! Whatever type of music was going to be on the CD, they was going to critisize. And as for the haters, well pretty much the same. But yet, you have some people saying Rihanna’s CD promotes suicide, violence, gun violence, and the dark side, but they gave it top ratings, what the hell is wrong with this picture? I feel like the haters, the critics, and anyone else that dislikes Chris is never going to give him a chance, which is so sad on them. But these are the same people that probably needs to fix what’s going on in their pathetic lives before they continue to judge him.

    [Reply]

  77. Raychel

@ when? rihanna’s album does not promote gun violence and suicide, fire bomb the last song and cold case love prove that. If you like chris brown’s music good for you, you shouldnt care what the critics say and you shouldnt make a speech about how biased they are when they are just doing they’re job. They didnt like the album, it had nothing to do with the situation…. critics didnt like r.kellys album, but its doing good. Its not about what the critics say, its about you the fan, so stop wasting your time ranting about what the critics said and enjoy the album…

They even said the song Russian Rulette promotes suicide. I am not the only one making speeches about the ctitics being biased, anybody can see they are being biased and it has alot to do with the situation. Yes I am a fan of Chris Brown’s so stop wasting your time worrying about my comment because apparently I am not the only one that thinks the critics are being biased, or did you not read some of the other comments?

This album is definitely doing so well on the charts right now, and you are doing nothing but spitting in the wind like the other Rihanna stans.. He ralbum went from over 200,000 in album sales to under 78,000 in album sales her second week which is over a 60% drop. And this is with not more promotion than Chris But better promotion. Her interview was much longer, and made him look bad. Her live performances are on x factor, good morning america, the late show with david letterman, and Nokia theatre in London, and are televised worldwide to millions, and she still sells that?? On top of that they give someone who hardly has a singing voice, some ofthe greatest reviews an album could ever ask for, in response to the “incident to help her as if she hasn’t had enough already.. He gets no tv performances, no performances broadcasted to millions of people worldwide, no 1 hour interview about a famous incident and hardly any radio play because he’s been blacklisted, and some of the worst reviews ever written on an above average album, and people buy none of it. You know why, were human beings with the ability to forgive and understand that he is moving on, and has gotten better, and is getting better. You know else why. Because were not manufactured robots without a Heart, Mind, and Soul. These writers fail to realize that we are Intelligent people who Guess what, KNOW BETTER! He’s number 1 in over 8 countries in the R&B charts and is number 2 under susan Boyle on the Main charts of album sold on itunes. So please spare us the fuckin BULLSHIT AND STOP WITH THIS HATE FROM ALL OF YOU UNFORGIVING ASSHOLES WITH NO LIVES! HATE IS A 24 HOUR Job and however you choose to dish it out, you find a fuckin way. But womean lie, men lie, numbers don’t!! I told people they’d be eating there words.. Oh and he’s number two in R&B over at amazon now too! Until I listened to it over and over, then I got hooked lol. It’s TOO catchy. The lyrics aren’t that great, and its repetitive but its just so darn catchy. All in all, I’d give it a 2.5 out of 5. How the hec can you say the critics are biased, when they gave r.kelly bad reviews and his album is doing better than most? maybe you cant face the fact that his album just isnt that good, but its your opinion, and you cntinue to rant off on people, who advise you, that you like chris, and the critics dont control your opinion if your a faithful fan and that you can listen to his album if you want to. Noones stopping you. You people make me sick, talking about, I cant see past my hate towards him. PLEASE, I STILL listen to chris brown music and I am not everywhere commenting on chris brown posts.. This is a message to all of you… who cares about critics? Who cares about what others say? Thats my point. If you love him, everything else should be irrelevant. And @when? rihanna CLEARY said that russian roulette is NOT about suicide. So they can say that, and you can believe it. I don’t write much on these articles and blogs and such but I will say that Chris Brown’s album is excellent. Whether you like or dislike him is irrelevant because there’s no denying the voice he has – and when the production/songwriting is as good as it is here it just leaves VERY good music. This is one of the (very) few albums I’m BUYING this year because it deserves it. Better than R.Kelly’s album – and I’ve always like Kellz’ music.
