New Music: Monica – ‘Everything to Me’

Monica

“You’re everything to me/ The air that I breathe,” Monica sings on the first single from her new album Still Standing, due this spring. The soulful ballad was featured on her BET reality show and samples ’70s singer Deniece Williams’ “Silly.”

MONICA SANG THE SHIT OUT OF THAT. I can’t wait to hear her perform this live on major shows; daytime, primetime/late night.

I love Monica. But this song is too slow and boring to me. This isn’t first single material. If anything she needs a Pop ballad or at least a decent mid tempo.

    @Giselle,

    Monica is R&B, not POP!

@laos, Her biggest hit was a Pop/R&B ballad. She should stay true to that.

is that the full song? it’s under 2 min and 30 seconds. something doesn’t seem right. she has to come stronger. not radio friendly enough…is she trying to appeal to the adult r&b audience? i dont’ understand what J and her “A&R” team is doing.

This is a good song but its not gonna be a hit. I want to hear records like Before u walk out my life, Angel of mine and the first night. The first single should be a radio record. This song doesnt sound like a single at all!

Monica came out in 1995, This is a perfect single for her, she is singing and doing what she does best. It’s 2010 and I’m sure if she released before you walk out of my life today, there would be people saying that its to slow and not a radio friendly song. Times have changed, artists just need to do them and not worry about radio and fitting in. Bravo to Monica for doing what she does best. I am definitely looking forward to buying her album.

    Wake up girl. It’s 2010.
I mean you can be a R&B singer and keep anchored to your Urban/soulful roots and update your sound.
Keyshia Cole does that very well… just like Mary J. That joint sounds sooo old. omg! I really don’t like it. Once In A Lifetime was WAY better.

It was released because thousands of her fans wanted it it released and twitter A&R Larry Jackson to death, lol. It is a timeless, incredible record wether you are old or young. It’s not really slow, lol and it fits radio format great with a short length. This is her “I’m back” record and Missy doesn’t write and produce anything thats not a hit. This has got grammy written all over it and everyone that is huge as a producer and artist in the industry said this should be released and that it was indeed a HIT. It’s not really about no. 1 it’s about talent and amazing music at this point in her career. Home girl has plenty paper, a great family and and just wants to do and sing what feels right. Her fans are STANS and me being one let me tell you that we will request and play the heck out of it. You will hear it on your radio. THIS IS REAL MUSIC! Radio, BET and MTV have brainwashed people so much they don’t even remember what REAL and GOOD MUSIC is. Get em Mo!

@Stephonne, amen. i love this song!! I agree I miss hearing real music. I’m mad that they keep pushing back the date for the album because the label wasn’t feeling the songs. Am so glad that Monica’s fans blew Larry’s Tweeter account up!! Alright Mo!!

I have to agree and say Mo is singing and i think the masses will love the fact that she is doing what she loves. This is a great lead off single because its letting people know she is singing her ass off and that she’s not playing this time around. Radio airwaves will play this song non stop. Its already getting airplay on XM and the radio circuits here in my area. I like the fact that she switched it up and gave me that ol skool feel meaning it wasnt a very long song. Short and has wanting more. I think her 2nd single will most definitely put a stamp on her return to the scene. Go Mo. I love you and im sure many many more do as well. TEAM MONICA 2010!!!

I love the song and it was a good choice monica is not a pop artist and i don’t understand why people wants to make her one.She is a very good rnb and soul singer.

Monica’s voice sounds amazing on this track but i do not agree with it being the first single. I was hoping the first single would sound like “Still Standing”. Radio stations are not going to pick up on this song, period.

What is exactly is Real Music…LMAO…People who use that terminology are probably older, We are in an era of POP!!! Meaning popular and in reality this does not target the Masses…Nice song( cant take that away) But NOT commercial music.. BAD SINGLE CHOICE. “One in A Lifetime” and “Love all over me”better crossover potential…But we shall see…Wishing Mo the the best,But after such a long battle of Hit searching she has to leave ego behind and trust label and Radio. She may deliver “Real Music” and find herself “Really DROPPED!!! No Pun intended….

Let me start off by saying that I heard this song last Friday and it has been stuck in my head since then. I am happy that it has been created. Missy Elliot shows, as a producer, that she can produce a variety of music. All of you, who are not liking this song, are hoping for R&B where you see the artist pop locking in their video or doing a dance routine like Ciara, Beyonce, Christ Brown and others. That has never ever been Monica. She has always, even when she was a teenager, had that older sound. I still love her first album. Back in the day when Monica, Brandy, Usher, and Alliyah came out at the same time Brandy was the one that received popularity. The others had this older sound and was much better. With all of that being said I know for sure that there is some young and old who will appreciate this song. This is going to be the wedding song of the year and the love making song of the year. Back in the day, myself and others just loved good music someone would put out, instead of immediately thinking the song will not be number one. I can name a lot of artists and boy and girl groups that were out in the 90s when Monica arrived on the scene; they had great music some were one hit wonders and others probably received grammies, however Monica is still here. So people just go out and buy her album or download her songs for 99 cents and show the girl some love. Real R&B (Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, Jodeci, New Edition, Kut Klose, SWV, Luther Vandross, Guy, Teena Marie, Al Green, Joe, Isley Brothers…I just had to name a few that came to my memory) has been slowly dying as some artists continue to add rap verses to their R&B songs. This year Monica is Back. Sade is Back, and I am ready to welcome anyone new or old to just represent R&B like it was. I miss it.

Great album filler,Nice for “Kissing after Dark”…Not a Great Single but Im a fan to the end…Either way “One In A Lifetime” will eventually Burn up the charts, Had it not been for Keysha Cole Record its possible that The Youth would not Know her, its been a while so in order to stay relevant all around a Pop/Urban record is needed,Her new fans may not have the patience for this Ole school Jam. Its a little too “Groovy”(lol) for the untouched demographics, She needs the ringtone buyers too.

  25. Real R&B Lover

For those of U not old enough to know real music (and I can tell there are quite a few of U), Monica’s new single, Everything to Me, is what real R&B is all about – and not about trying to develop a new dance to it. U must remember that Monica is not in her 20s anymore so that means it is time to GROW UP!!!! As for the single itself, brings me back to my high school years due to her and Missy’s sampling of the classic song “Silly” by Deniece Williams, mother of rapper/producer Jazze Pha, for those of U who did not know. Just as a reminder to all of U who thinks this single is too slow or not for radio, one day before U know it, U will be in your late 30s and beyond and say to yourself, I can’t take all this rap crap being played on the radio and at the teeny bopper clubs because one day U HAVE TO GROW UP.

I agree a 100% with real r & b lover! I’m a r & b lover myself and I’ve been a Monica fan since she first came out and have always loved her voice. She is not just a singer, she is a SANGER, there is a difference! I’m almost 40 and love real true singers and that’s all i listen to. Never been a pop artist fan and never will be! Monica represents real music and has talent that’s not a gimmick! Who wants to wake up everyday to rap and pop! I don’t even listen to the radio anymore cause of the music they play and when I do I listen to gospel! The music industry cators only to young and pop and that’s sad! You have people and fans who love r & b and want it to come back everything else is sounding the same and overrated!!! So whether you like Monica or any other r & b singers don’t matter cause her music speaks for itself and she will be at the grammy’s! Real sangers- Whitney Houston, Monica, Lauryn Hill, Stephanie Mills, Jennfier Hudson, Fantasia, Anita Baker, Regina Bell, Jennifer Holiday, Miki Howard, Cheryl Pepsi Riley, Kelly Price, Keke Wyatt these are just a few! If you put them up against any pop artist today and it was based on talent it will not be one pop artist today who would come close!!! It’s TALENT NOT POPULARTITY OR LOOKS!!! But for you young people who was born in this hip hop pop culture era of course they don’t know what r & b and real music is!!! When they get older they will see and understand then! My daughter is 19 and she use to listen to rap and pop all the time but when she heard my music and r & b you can’t pay her to listen to hip hop and pop now!!! She said music today has no meaning and to pop! So til you have really took the time to listen to r & b and real music how can u speak bad of it! R & B FOR LIFE! IF I HAD A RADIO STATION IT WOULD BE STRICTLY R & B, OLD SCHOOL AND GOSPEL!!! NO RAP OR POP ALLOWED AND WILL NOT CATOR TO THE YOUNG PEOPLE AND WOULDN’T CARE IF THEY DIDN’T LISTEN!!!!
MATURE YOUR MINDS YOUNG PEOPLE AND RECOGNIZE REAL MUSIC AND STOP BEING BRAINWASHED BY TV AND THE INDUSTRY! I PROMISE YOU WILL SEE AND HEAR THE DIFFERENCE BUT CAUSE YOU YOUNG PEOPLE ARE NOT IN A SETTLED OR MATURE STAGE IN YOUR LIFE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO PARTY AND LISTEN TO POP AND RAP! I’M NOT SAYING RAP AND POP ARE BAD BUT IT’S NOT FOR ME AND I DON’T UNDERSTAND IT AND IT DON’T HAVE ANY MEANING OR SUBSTANCE! PEACE TO YOU ALL AND BE SAFE1

For someone like myself who listens to all types of music from Yo Gotti, Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, etc…I absolutely love this song!!! I kept rewinding it the On Demand episode. Anyone I’ve played this for loves it. I think this is soo Monica. I am not disappointed at all. Only thing I do wish is that it was longer!

I think this was a strong first single for monica it really showed the range of her voice it kinds of reminds me of a gospel song with a r&b flavor to it ! It could have been a little longer in my opinion but it still is a great song. The way she changed up the song from the original was very creative and unique! monica to me song her version with more soul than denise williams silly of me! They both are great singers none the less!!

Really rotten!!! Try being “origianal” for once! The original artist “Ms. Denise Williams”, song titled “Silly” is a MASTERPIECE! I like Monica, but why would she allow her producers talk her into butchering this wonderful song? Also, “she samples too damn much on her albums.”
