In a new interview with Details magazine, Nicki Minaj talks about being gay in hip-hop, her father’s fiery past, being a role model to young women, the gift she plans to give Lil Wayne in jail, her love for adult-contemporary singer Enya, and how much she gets paid to do a feature. This ain’t your average Barbie.
Q: As an openly bisexual rapper, do you think hip-hop is getting more gay-friendly?
A: I think the world is getting more gay-friendly, so hip-hop is too. But it’s harder to imagine an openly gay male rapper being embraced. People view gay men as having no street credibility. But I think we’ll see one in my lifetime.
Q: Have you seen the YouTube video where Michelle Trachtenberg raps one of your verses?
A: She’s the cutest thing. I just wanted to reach into the computer and kiss her. I might have to get her on a track.
Q: Your father set fire to your home when you were a kid in Queens, New York. What happened?
A: He drank a lot and did drugs, and he would get violent when he did. When he set fire to the house, he was attempting to kill my mother. She got out before it burned all the way down. I’ve always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind—because I wanted my mother to be stronger, and she couldn’t be. I thought, “If I’m successful, I can change her life.”
Q: As younger and younger fans come to your shows, do you feel pressure to tone down the racier elements of your persona?
A: I do. I’m a role model now. I didn’t know I was gonna have 13-year-old fans, so I’ve tried to change a few things here and there. But I also know that the girls don’t want me to be Miley Cyrus, either.
Q: Are you going to send your mentor Lil Wayne a gift while he’s in prison?
We were at a Jay-Z concert right before he went away, and he said, “Yo, Nick, how come you never bring any bad bitches around with you?” I said, “My fault. I’ve got you next time!” So I’ll send him a poster of a bad bitch to put up in his cell.
Q: Is it true that you’re a big Enya fan?
A: Who doesn’t love Enya? Whenever I’m in a trying time, she is the calm in the middle of the storm. If I put her on, I’ll be in this crazy peaceful state. I love her style. And her harmonies are freaking genius.
Q: You’ve rapped on songs for Usher, Mariah Carey, and Robin Thicke. How much do you charge for a cameo?
I get a handsome amount. I could definitely buy a car off one of my guest appearances. And I’m not talking about a Hyundai.

She is gonna make it big. Hopefully she don’t tone the concerts down too much when she gets her own full fledged tour.

I have a hard time believing Nicki listens to Lauryn Hill and Enya. I’m not hating on Nicki because I think is an Ok rapper but when she says things like that I say to myself “Then why is you’re music so nasty, popy, and seems to be more influenced by Lil’ Kim than anything”. Lauryn Hill talked about girls like Nicki in her song “Doo Wop” so why does she dress and look like a stripper??? I think Nicki talks alot of crap and she should stop and keeping doing what she does best and that’s making mediocre music.

@UltraKid what u said is the truth. I wonder why most ppl can’t see she is an arrogant fraud. She is in no way influenced by Lauren Hill & I really doubt she listens 2 Enya.

lol being a nice person really doesnt have much to do with talent… if being a hater means i have a REAL taste in hip hop then dammit thats what i’ll be lol… but on another note i’m glad she made it through the rough times in her life.

I really don’t understand the people who call her fake. She just admitted in the interview and in other interviews that she uses her acting when she raps. Calling an rapper who studied theater a fake is kind of redundant.
Also, I don’t understand all this supposed love of Lil Kim by these people since she has not had been in the music scene as of late. If you guys loved her so much why didn’t you support Kim when her last album came out.
News Flash people hip hop is just entertainment. If you want real then read a newspaper.

@BamfNightie,
I’m not a big Kim fan either but Nicki is heavily influenced by her and Hip Hop is not just entertainment—Hip Hop is a culture.

When ppl say she’s fake is has nothing 2 do with her faces or physical appearance. She’s fake because she knows she wasn’t a Barbie before she had money. Now that she has money she is trying 2 be as commercial as possible & its just annoying. She needs 2 keep it real & be herself.

Oh please get over yourself with your whole authenticity hip hop shtick. That trope is getting tiring. Hip hop is in a stagnant position right now, and the whole authenticity thing is one of things that brings it down. Plus the sexism, homophobia, and “We are a culture and takes ourself way too seriously” crap. Many so called authentic rappers have personality traits or things in their backgrounds that don’t totally 100% adhere to their public image. But that doesn’t make them less talented. You so called fans who want authenticity only what you think is authentic. You don’t want the truth.
I like Nicki because she is upfront with what she is doing and why she does it.

@BamfNightie: Could you please explain yourself a bit further? What do you mean authenticity is bringing hip-hop down? Are you talking about wannabe gangsta rappers like 50 Cent and Lil Wayne that aren’t authentic gangstas? Cause that’s not the type of “authenticity” people criticizing Nicki are talking about. By authentic, we mean rappers that don’t try to be anything they’re not, rappers like Common, Taleb Kweli, Kid Cudi, rappers that talk about things other than “fucking bitches” and “getting that cheddar”. This goes for female rappers, too. What happened to positive artists that REALLY stood for female empowerment like Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill? Lil Kim, Trina and Nicki can claim all they want that they’re about female empowerment, but their songs are no different than what their misogynist male counterparts are rapping about.

Some role model. If young girls see her as a role model they’ll turn out the same. That’s not the kind of role model I would have for children but oh well. The world is turning in that direction. :/

so Nicki is bisexual ? o__O you know , i love Nicki alot . And im trying very very hard to tell myself that Nicki is not fake like everyone is saying and shit , but then she comes out. I dont know when she did that but still, last i read she wasnt at all like tis untill that song with Usher, where her “bisexuality” showed the most. Ive heard that she was bi before becoming a Barbie but i mean since she aint say nothing , her coming now makes her look completely fake :( i still love nicki though, i just want the real Nicki back, the one from the beggining.

I think Nicki is entertaining. Hip-hop needs variety. Hip-hop is a reflection of life…and not everyone has the same lifestyle. And her sexual orientation is no surprise to me… there’s just somethings you don’t say… even with a “pause”. As for the whole role model thing… I see where you’d find some inspiration. Her grind is hard and she’s focus on what she wants and how she wants to get it. But then again I don’t let my little brother listen to her or encourage girls too follow either. Because like she’s stated before kids weren’t her original target. I give her kudos for trying to clean it up… But then some would say she’s fake for that. You can’t please everybody, that would really be fake. So people get mad which turns to hate.
