Well he tried, but I agree Aaliyah was a special person and ahead of her time musically. Take a sample or lyric, but if you gonna cover one of her songs, come hard and come correct; which sadly Dream did not.

He did aight, not terrible, not great.
Picked the wrong song. I never really was big on One in A Million (BORING!) and hated how Aaliyah was O.D praised after her death. People were checking for her, but not as much as they were until after she died. But that is how life is. He should of tried 4 Page Letter.

LOL at people who thought Aaliyah only got hot after she died. True death brings more attention to artists but to say Aaliyah wasn’t hot before her death is quite laughable. Her last album debuted at number 2 before her death and she signed on to be in both Matrix movies. That doesn’t sound like moves from a B-star lol. You guys crack me up.
On to Dream on…
This is the most awful cover I’ve heard in a long time and I thought John Legend’s “Dont you worry about a thing” was bad! His harmonies are off and he still sounds like a teenager on song sung by precocious teenager! Furthermore, after hearing this crap, Dream on has taught me: American music standards have fallen dramatically and Overseas and underground are still the best outlets for Black music. This is shameful.

@MaBinti
If that is directed @ me then I didn’t say she got hot after she died, she remained the how she was to me, a cool R&B artist. I said the praise came very often after her death. People I knew that never messed with her all of a sudden became instant fans! Just like how after Michael Jackson’s death occurred his album sales (that were already great) went through the roof. And these are albums that came out maybe around 10-25 years ago. These people are not true fans, just bandwagon riders.
“like omg just cause so & so died let me buy and like their music”, that is sad -_-

@Phoenix_Wright
I understand what you’re saying, but I have to say that I was one of those fans of Aaliyah who realized the integrity and brilliance of her music after she passed. Call me a “bandwagon rider,” but I say it’s never too late to respect a great artist. Maybe I came late in the game, but I’m still a true fan of Aaliyah’s work.

Can I just add that I was a huge Aaliyah fan fro
te start, she and I are/would be the same age so I always felt a kind of connection with her. And yes I do agree that after a artist death their popularity kind of gets a boast. But as a fan I just smile and thank God that her ( well theirs I see you MJ, left eye, biggie) music and artisty touches people it might not have. Cause music never dies.

GARBAGE…AND HE CAN’T SING!!!!I LOVED Aaliyah’s version like crazy (still listen to it too occasionnally) coz it’s one of her greatest pieces of work. This has to be the worst cover version of an Rnb song in a very long time. It just goes to show how up his own ass he really is. I hope Missy and Timbaland didn’t give him the OK to do this song, cause this is what I call SACRILEGE, and isn’t this a chick song anyway???SMH.

BUT THE DREAM DID ALLRIGHT.
IF ANYBODY SHOULD DO THIS SONG ALL OVER IS CIARA!
SHE IS THE ONLY PERSON WHO COULD PROBABLY PULL OFF A AALIYAH SONG!

Its aight but he(everyone) should leave Aaliyah songs unless they’re respected in the industry vocally and career-wise. This is an easy song to sing and he still needed computer assistance. When Aaliyah did it she was comfortable and real smooth over the track. RIP Baby Gurl..
[Reply]
May 18th, 2010 at 12:15 pm
@ Chris no….Ciara is definitely not the ONLY person to pull off an aaliyah song vocally.
Amerie (I just died, float, crazy wonderful, just like me, just what I needed to see etc)could definitely sing an aaliyah song.
Brandy (turn it up, I tried, come as you are, etc) could also sing an aaliyah song and add a more alto/tenor flavor to it.
Tweet (turn the lights off, beautiful, iceberg etc) could definitely cover an aaliyah song..especially “At your best”.
there are some others but they come to mind instantly…oh and The dream sucks on this!! FAIL!

even Janelle Monae could pull off an aaliyah song…have U heard how versatile she is? her range? her vocal abilities in general? not a game!

i miss aaliyah so mutch, it’s still hard to realise that there never will be a next album with new songs or new video’s of her/
the one thing that i liked about this song from the-dream is that people will remember her: best r&b singer in the world, forever

May 18th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
well actually there are unreleased recordings of atleast 11 songs that she didn’t finish or make the Aaliyah album that she recorded in Australia…but no one seems to know how to get them. one of the tracks called dancin was leaked on staticmajor site

May 18th, 2010 at 7:25 pm
It’s not that bad… People are right, Dream is no Aaliyah and our impression of that song will always be based on the first we have, which is beautiful. I love miss Aaliyah from her start to the very end and still love her but c’mon guys. An artist has the right to make a cover and pay homage. It definitely wasn’t perfect but it wasn’t off key. A woman would’ve sounded better but I like that a guy finally tried to cover an Aaliyah song. It switches things up. I’m actually not a Dream fan but this might actually be the best I’ve heard him on a track to be honest. No one will ever sound like the original of anything and you can’t make everyone happy. I must actually (and I never thought I would say this to a Dream performed song)… good job. Writing, however, is his strength.
[Reply]
May 18th, 2010 at 10:52 pm
^Not true…Dream just could not handle this “VOCALLY” challenging song. I can think of many other male singers who would have done a better job…Usher, Justin Timberlake, Mario, maybe Bobby V, Ryan Leslie, Pleasure P….almost any male singer other than DREAM!!! shyt even Drake would have done a better job. Dream was messy and a major fail point BLANK.

Considering the fact that Aaliyah vocals where horrible and she could never sing live, the dream did ok not great. I was an Aaliyah fan but lets be real her last cd never really lived up to One in a million and people didn’t really start checkin for her until after she died! Get over it, it Aaliyah was still alive she would be washed up just like everyone else from the 90′s!

Omg. You people need to CHILL. I liked Aaliyah before she died, but a lot more after her death because I was like 7 years old when she died, so I wasn’t that much into listening to music anyways except for maybe the songs I heard on Disney Channel… I understand Phoenix_Rider completely because I loved Michael Jackson before his death (and JUST remembered he had the song Smooth Criminal months before his death on MTV Jams… how odd), but knew more songs after, but I just knew you were going to be slammed for what you said because of how you said it. I mean, how do you go from talking about this song to about Aaliyah’s death. Just rate the song please… I don’t like it too much. The-Dream could’ve done better. I never really thought he could sing all that great, but c’mon… this is AALIYAH. So, I don’t disagree with the fact that he TRIED to cover an Aaliyah song because it’s really not that big of a deal to me because FOB cover “Beat It” by MJ before he died & a lot of people cover songs, but… I just disagree with how he sung the song.

I am a fan of both The Dream and Aaliyah. I have to admit that The Dream did not do this song any justice. He should have left this one alone. On the other hand, at least people are still talking about the beautiful, talented artist Aaliyah. Even though The Dream butchered this classic, at least our baby girl Aaliyah has not been forgotten and her musical talent will always be remembered. Good try, Dream. Unfortunately, you struck out on this one.

You are interpreting it totally wrong. Clearly this more about who sang it originally. But the dream did a decent job and it was enjoyable. oF course Aaliyah did a better job, but your overreacting.
In addition, your comments wouldnt be the same if she were alive. He’s simply paying his respects, i respect him for that.

I like cover songs good cover songs but this is A decent cover, The Dream should have Down With The Clique a minor aaliyah song that would have better than one million i hope somebody does a better job of this song, i like Aaliyah but she was minor star compare to Brandy but i liked both of them Back in the 90,s i would have like to see Amerie cover this song that would have cooler than The Dream verison.

I love Aaliyah, I’ve been a fan since I was 5, but The-Dream ain’t committing no crime here. All of y’all just hating on him because this is Aaliyah’s original song, not because of how well he done. It’s not a big deal. Y’all look very stupid and ignorant. I don’t think Aaliyah would be acting like a bunch of jacks about a minor issue like this.
