Janelle Monáe Addresses Gay Rumors

Janelle Monae

Janelle Monáe’s masculine wardrobe, consisting of a black suit, tie, and saddle shoes, has some questioning her sexuality. Music’s newest darling is addressing the rumors.

Since capturing the nation’s attention with her critically-acclaimed album The ArchAndroid, the sci-fi singer has had to face scrutiny about whether she prefers to date men or women, but she won’t give a straight answer. “The lesbian community has tried to claim me,” she tells Rolling Stone. “But I only date androids. Nothing like an android—they don’t cheat on you.”

For those wondering why she chooses to dress the way she does, Monáe has a perfectly good explanation. “I call it my ‘uniform,’” she says. “My mother was a janitor and my father collected trash, so I wear a uniform too.”

She hopes her original look will inspire other women to embrace their individuality. “I’m trying to open doors for girls who look like myself and have been told they can’t sing about this or that.”

It seems to be working because she has many supporters, including one famous fan in the White House. “People that worked in his campaign have told us he is very aware of me,” Monáe coyly reveals about President Obama. “He’s a fan.”

so she needs to conform because “she gets on your nerves”. according to your limited standards, a woman can only be pretty “with a dress and long flowyhair”. my how enlightened in the year 2011. how evolved in this era of women doing so much more than trying to be pretty. as if Madonna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga don’t have their gimmick, but it doesn’t annoy you Ms Keys since it adheres to what is familiar to you, women looking like what society has dictated is attractive in a woman.

nothing like a woman accepting the servitude “society’s” mores have imposed upon her…..

@theresa_keys, miss monae is simply bucking the “norm”- her generation isn’t going to be like the ‘nita bakers or miki howards of the ’80s( or even the Destiny’s Child,Toni Braxtons of recent) They are into neo soul, electronica( and that GOD AWFUL “I can’t sing” auto tune!)

Sadly as african americans we stereotype ourselves and often miss the truly creative in “our” music( Jimi Hendrix is still a MYSTERY to young black people, even though he was the direct result of at least a hundred years of african spiritual, jazz and soul! YET we’d rather associate our history of great music to clowns like Kanye West as its true inheritors!)

While I have my own frustrations at the rejection of strong male and female relations in the Blk community, I won’t knock Miss Monae if she is indeed a lesbian- people seem fine that purely commercial, untalented sell out Nikki Minaj is a known bi-sexual! I want to see creativity and variation in music- Our people have been innovators in the field entertainment and I hope Monae continues the trend…

@now anything, well nowadays too many Blk woman are affecting “butch” or the thug look( its sad to see round bottomed blk women walking around with pants sagging and showing their “mens” underwear like their equally stupid hoodlum male counterparts!

Some are even “coming out” as wannabe “macho” stud broads( and contradiction in terms) and it is offensive to many blk men and women who still see homosexuality as a deviant practice , and potentially harmful to the blk family.

I think the androgeny Janelle displays in her clothing is a nod back to ’80s electronic pop/ nu wave singer Yazz as well as the very beautiful lead singer of the British Mod group, Selector- she is definitely no K.D Lang, as Janelle is very feminine in , but the “uniform” she wears is utilitarian and adds a stark contrast which draws in the curious to her music.

Put Janelle in a mini “booty dress” with high heels and a 50 lb blond weave like Beyonce, and nobody would even NOTICE her. To me that would be the worst stereotype of what a “real blk female singer” should look like….

What does it matter about what she wears, either? If she wore “a dress and long flowyhair” she would be like so many other clones. People are so indoctrinated into looking the same, acting the same, being the same, that they can’t stand anyone doing their own thing. And society’s become so stupid that they equate someone’s clothes with their sexuality. Don’t like it, don’t listen or watch her, turn your eyes away and turn your ears off, but you’ll be missing out on something important. If she had her breasts and behind hanging out then people would hate on her for that too. People are just beyond words sometimes – “stupid” is not a strong enough word but I’ll think of one. Unfortunately, tbh, black folks especially can’t stand when people do their own thing and don’t care what other’s think. This is the truth that the same one’s who’d judge would deny.

Probably one of the most entertaining artist/band I’ve seen in a long time. She gives you a show and leaves her heart on the stage. Her music is smart, diverse, and fun. The first time I saw her I went to the show with a friend, I didn’t own her album and didn’t know any of the songs, but I still enjoyed every minute of the show. That is a true sign of an entertainer.
People: stop obsessing over petty things and embrace each individual for who they are. The biggest artist in the world that have lasted through the test of times have been unique entertainers that bring something different to the table. Bottom line – this girl is DOPE as HELL!

When did entertainment become about “who’s sleeping with who?” and not about “dang, he or she is very talented?”

This needs to change! The fact is that there are many closeted people in this music industry because they know that they could be alienated or sell less records.

Think about it! If your favorite male R&B singer just came out and said “I’m gay or bi” for real, would you still support them?!

Everybody wants someone to “come out” just to alienate them and not except them. Until people in the business, especially a business dominated toward a BLACK market, can learn to stop judging, I don’t really blame any of these guys (or women for that manner) for hiding and staying closeted.

Many people wouldn’t except them so let them continue to feed into your fantasy that they are straight. It’s too bad someone’s sexuality can so strongly affect their career when TALENT is all that matters in the end.

Things like these seriously piss me off for two reasons:

1.) Why does the way you dress determine your sexuality? Does that mean if I wear a dress tomorrow I’ll all of the sudden have a sexual attraction to guys? If so, then I was highly unaware!

2.) What does it matter if she’s bi- or lesbian? Even though it sounds like she isn’t, I wouldn’t care if she was, because it’s her character and her music that matters.

Sheesh, people, just calm the fuck down. lol… Most people are too worried about things that don’t really matter.

And there you go. Based on the comments I think we know what’s what and who’s who. Okay.

That she answered about androids supports her concept album, but people who are only checking for her to criticize clearly wouldn’t know that. If I was a celebrity and people started asking me stupid, none-of-their-business/irrelevant questions I’d say something like that, too.

    [Reply]

  27. LShea

I agree with Phoenix and Harvey. Also, given the fact that popular culture is TMZ culture, following every little insignificant thing that celebrities and pseudo-celebrities (I’m looking at you, Kim Kardashian) do, people feel entitled to know everything personal thing about a celebrity’s life.

People criticize Janelle for the things that don’t even matter, while her album has gotten higher grades/reviews (albeit not as good numbers) than some of their favorites. Given the reviews in spite of the numbers for many mainstream artists, it just goes to show what a lot of people value.

black people are so damn hopeless…they always want to hate, alienate, or find a way to box someone. What does he not singing and dancing in a lacefront wig, mini skirts have to do with her talent?? What does her being gay have to do with her talent??

I hate the fact that many people think they are entitled to know who she is fvcking and what she is wearing as oppose to just listening to her music.

    [Reply]

First of all, an android isn’t a phone. Wow, guys…

Second, does her sexual orientation really matter? At the end of the day she is still really talented, a really down-to-earth person who wants to unite people with her music. So what’s the real problem here? You people who can’t accept that.

Third, Janelle will not change for anyone and I hope she doesn’t. She inspires a lot of girls, including me, to not follow all that bullshit presented in front of us just for the sake of being accepted. People need to get their heads out their asses and maybe look at themselves in the mirror before judging anyone else. That is all.

I think it’s just her style. she said she dresses like that to influence a woman’s individuality. dressing like that is definitely a style that i haven’t seen women express in music. I feel very influenced to try to stand out now and not wear what every other girl is wearing. we should spread the individuality that she exhibits and not take it as meaning she’s gay or not.

    [Reply]

  36. UserQQQQ

she’s totally gay. Not because of how she dresses but because she refused to say no. When’s the last time someone refused to say no. Neil Patrick Harris. Greatest mystery for years was IS NPH gay. He refused to say and he was the last straight hope. Turns out he was gay.

If you don’t want to say “I’m gay” then lie. I don’t care but when you say “I’m not gonna answer” and EVERY time it turns out that person is gay, then you’re not helping the cause.

As far as her outfits go. They’re perfectly fine. She wants to wear business suits and ties that doesn’t mean she’s gay.

  37. True Blue

^^^ Actually, she states in no uncertain terms that she is NOT a lesbian (try reading the article again). Now that doesn’t remove the possibility of bisexuality, but the point is that it doesn’t matter what her sexual orientation is, the focus should be on her music, not who she dates. It amazes me that in 2010 people can still be so hung-up about such irrelevant things. Especially in the black community where homophobia is so rampant still to this day. That’s why you have rappers casually dropping homophobic slurs in their songs and beefing with other rappers by childishly accusing them of being gay without anyone batting an eye and calling them out. That outdated mentality has got to go. I’m glad Janelle stands for what does. She wants people to embrace being different and not fitting the mold. And she doesn’t put up with any of that homophobic bullshit. Nor should anyone else. Besides, not being a girly-girl doesn’t make a woman gay. Hasn’t anyone heard of tomboys? Most of them happen to be straight in spite of their preference in clothing. I thought people would be smarter than to think androgynous style= gay. I mean, look at Grace Jones and Annie Lennox, both had a very androgynous style but they’re straight. Prince has worn some of the gayest outfits I have ever seen on a man, yet he seems to prefer women for the most part. You can’t decipher a person’s sexual orientation based on how they dress, that is just stupid. And like I said, this is 2010, we shouldn’t give a damn who a person chooses to date. It’s none of our damn business.

Why is it when someone dresses something they consider out of the “norm” is asked what is his/her sexuality or rather gender attraction? As long as she is enjoying what she does, is happy, and makes people happy. You, yourself, just enjoy your life the way you do. You be you. Don’t mind someone else’s business, try to put label on people, gossip about them, etc. In other words, get a life; get your own life.
