Eminem and Jay-Z

Eminem and Jay-Z hit it out of the park during the first of two sold-out “Home & Home” concerts at Comerica Park in Detroit on Thursday (Sept. 2). Hip-hop history was made as the hometown boy shared the bill with his Brooklyn brother, performing for over 42,000 fans.

The all-star lineup included top-tier guests for each set. Hov brought out longtime associate Memphis Bleek as well as Young Jeezy, while Em was accompanied by collaborators Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and G-Unit, Drake, Trick Trick, and D12, who had their own mini-set during Mr. Mathers’ performance.

B.o.B kicked off the night’s festivities with a brief 30-minute performance, playing tracks including “Magic” and “Nothin’ on You” as fans trickled into the stadium.

Jay opened the show with a revved-up performance. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is hip-hop music and this is how far we’ve come… to rockin’ stadiums! said Jay-Z. “E’rybody make some noise.”

Emerging from the stage to the tune of his “Dynasty” intro, Jigga performed an 82-minute set featuring cuts from The Blueprint 3 (“On to the Next One,” “Empire State of Mind”) as well as a slew of classics (“99 Problems,” “U Don’t Know,” “Big Pimpin'”).

Hov, backed by a large band, took a moment during his set to pay tribute to lost hip-hop soldiers including Biggie, Tupac, and Aaliyah. “And I need you to make the most noise you’ve made all evening for Proof one time tonight y’all,” he told the raucous crowd, who chanted back, “Proof!”

Eminem headlined the evening with a 100-minute set, boasting seminal picks from his catalog (“The Way I Am,” “Cleanin’ Out My Closet”). Dr. Dre, rocking a Proof shirt, joined Em for a few tracks including “Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang” and “Still D.R.E.,” promising the crowd that his oft-delayed third album Detox would finally see the light of day. “I’m comin’!” he shouted.

“Detroit, I’m back. Did you miss me or what?” Em soon asked, bringing out 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks for “Patiently Waiting” and “In Da Club.” Drake emerged to lace the beat for “Forever,” returning the favor to Em who appeared at his OVO Festival in Toronto last month.

Jay came back out for their duet “Renegade,” while Em snuck in a few tracks at the end including “Airplanes, Pt. II” with B.o.B and “Not Afraid” (he teared up before performing the emotional cut). Em closed his high-powered set with “Lose Yourself” as fireworks shot out from behind him.

The pair will play an encore performance tonight in Detroit, and will head over to New York City to play at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 13 and 14, where Jay will headline.
