Em sold a lot of records but Love the Way You Lie was the big record off of that album. And the album overall while lauded for not being the cartoonish version we are used to him delivering was not…. I repeat… was not received as largely as Drake or Kanye. He sells astronomical units but his impact on the culture and the public isn’t what it once was.

TVA, do you hear how retarded you sound? Recovery had 2 #1s, bigger 1st week sales, more album sales, made a bigger impact, is up for AOTY at the Grammys and is clearly the better album.

How was it not received as widely as Drake’s or Kanye’s? You’re speaking out of your ass.

@Face How many albums did Relapse sell? How many number 1′s did it have, How big were it’s first week sales???? And how good was that album actually? Em is one of the most technically proficient rappers ever but song wise he can be hit or miss. My favorite record off of Recovery is No Love. But a lot of the records on there don’t do much for me. I don’t relate to that album the way I relate to Drake or Kanye’s personally. Em raps crazy and exercises his demons on Relapse and Recovery but he’s iconic in the same way Jay is iconic but you don’t get that same sense from either of them since the comebacks. American Gangster gave me the feeling I used to have about Jay albums pre-retirement but Kingdom Come and BP3 didn’t. I love those albums but they don’t have the power of AG or BP1. Em hasn’t delivered that album for me yet since he’s been back. Dark Fantasy was delivered as an event and is an epic piece of work. Thank Me Later had epic expectations and rode the wave in. Not as strong as So Far Gone but a solid followup that happened to be his actual “debut.” Drake was everywhere and it gets stamped on that merit the way the Slim Shady LP was less polished but as a debut was a moment in time. Same with Get Rich or Die Trying, you can’t recreate that feeling.

Em has a built in fan base that no one else can produce in hip hop so he will always outsell other hip hop artists. So sales can’t be brought into the discussion. He’s technically gifted at the art form so I can’t say that what he delivers is technically bad but as far as being “special” I haven’t felt that from him since the Marshall Mathers LP.

Kanye album was great but it was his production that stood out to my ears not the actually words much credit to him but the album was not classic because the substance wasn’t their threw out the album like power and devil in a new dress I gave kanye 8 out of ten but lacks classic verses but the production Is crazy can’t wait to hear pusha t with that production crazy.

@Traci Missy Elliott’s swag. She’s more Missy Elliott than Lil Kim. The Lil Kim comparison only comes because she’s from NY and they made her do that pic way back before the deal but being animated and making sounds is Missy and the singing. Kim don’t sing and doesn’t make the random noises.

@Tyler Ye won’t go against Em cause Em is nominated this year. Album had to come out by September for this year’s Grammy nods.

I may not agree with it fully, but they had some good stuff up there. MUSIC is NOT limited to just Hip-hop & r&b

Albums that didn’t even sell real well are up there too. An album sales really don’t make the actually albums GOOD, doesn’t mean it is bad either.

To the ppl saying wheres recovery. Where were you when these critics rated the album a 63 out of 100 on metacritic. What would then make these same critics turn around and put recovery on their best of 2010 list. Why would sales change a critics opinion of the album. If a critic thought the album sucked before it sold 3 million, he/she is going to think the same after it sells 3 million.

    [Reply]

  49. jayjayjj

Being that this is a critics list of the best albums of 2010. Why would recovery be on the list. The lowest rated album on this list is 75(Thank me Later). Recovery got a 63. I dont know why people are shocked. We no of the sub-par recovery reviews. Sub-par reviews= Not on many best of 2010 list. Simple logic really.

Thank you for putting ‘Tightrope’ – though I love ‘Cold War’ better it is a GREAT song with a great video concept that I think a lot of people missed (the song/video themselves).

And it’s true that an album’s sales are hardly reflection of whether an album is critically good or not – it’s moreso the case of fandom, exposure, and the particular type of music the mainstream is into at the time. The ArchAndroid didn’t sell a “lot” yet is critically very high-rated across the board and of great musical quality – case and point.

K, first of all everyone who keeps whining about Recovery not being on there should stop. Recovery sold a lot of units, yes, but the album itself was nothing special…all the songs were about how eminem “got back in the game and fucked it up cuz he’s so raw blah blah blah” or about some abusive relationship…eminem is a VERY skilled emcee but his album lacked creativity. Not Afraid had a great beat but once again the premise got old quick…liked the instrumental much more. Kanye’s Dark Twisted Fantasy on the other hand is a masterpiece from a production point of view and from a lyrical point of view. It’s such a diverse album, no song sounds familiar which gives it such a fresh feeling. Sales don’t say much about an album’s quality…and for Kanye to sell as may units after the year he’s had with all his public mishaps is pretty amazing anyways. On another note, So Appalled should be on the list instead of Power, that song is epic, no other word to describe it…

I don’t understand shit. Why is Eminem down under Kanye, when Billboard sees Eminem as the #1 rap artist, #7 song, #3 artist, #1 RNB/Hiphop #1 Digital Album etc. and Kanye isn’t even there. Where is Recovery? And why is “Tightrope” better than “Love The Way You Lie”? I NEVER HEARD OF THAT SONG! I’m sorry, maybe I never listen to the radio or something – hmm.. oh yes, i actually do almost 11 hours a day! – I NEVER heard of “Tightrope” or the singer who made it?

“Why is Eminem down under Kanye, when Billboard sees Eminem as the #1 rap artist, #7 song, #3 artist, #1 RNB/Hiphop #1 Digital Album etc.”

Billboard doesnt see em as the 1 rap artist. Those are just popularity contest and billboard just reports how the people voted. Billboard rated kanye’s album a 95 and em’s a 79. In fact Billboard rated thank me later(90), telfon don(90), and a whole bunch of other albums better than recovery. So prepare to get upset again when billboard.com releases their best of 2010 list and recovery is nowhere to be found on that list neither.

first off eminems records is up for Album of the Year because Kanye’s record came out too late. secondly since when we grade records off of commercial success alone, eminem will always sale records he always has most of the consumers have alot in common with him, doesnt nessecarily mean his album is great means it has a better distributor. Kanye on the other hand has alway topped the critics list this is nothing new to him it is more than what he usually gets but he rarily gets snubbed by critics becaus ehe makes the better music. point blank the critics have spoken aand they speak very clear the consensus says that as far as making albums is concerned Knaye is thebetter choice. deal with it

The Archandroid is by far the best album this year, even the best album in a very long time. Thats album is absolute genius. A freaking Masterpiece, what tha hell! Way better than any of the ones up there. Kanye’s album deserves to be on the list tho. His album is a masterpiece. Anybody who thinks otherwise are just crazy. You people obviously don’t listen to albums, but rather pay attention to Billboard charts then build your iPod playlists from that. Time magazine has issued the albums that, in their opinion, are the best of the year, NOT the best-selling. Not because Eminem sold a gazillion copies means the album is any good. Most critics have already opined the Eminem CD is one of his first. If you want great Eminem albums, go buy his first three records.
It matters not who made the most “impact,” (Sufjan Steven’s album, i’m sure, hasn’t sold even 10,000 copies since it has been released, yet it’s there, no? Respect someone else’s opinion, and if you can’t, then just shut up and stop proving yourselves to be idiots. Viva la Kanye!
