Basic Instinct

Ciara follows her Basic Instinct on her fourth album, in stores today. Executive produced by Tricky Stewart and The-Dream, the disc marks a return to her roots, with the sensual “Ride” and dance floor-pounding “Gimmie Dat.” Now the R&B chanteuse faces her critics. Find out what they thought below.

Entertainment Weekly: Always a strong singles artist, Ciara has struggled to find enough memorable material to fill an album. She comes closer than ever on her fourth full-length, Basic Instinct. B+

USA Today: Tricky Stewart, Mark Pitts, and The-Dream are the producers of note, but they’ve failed to come up with enough stimulating hooks and beats to convince. What they have concocted is sometimes incompatible with their client’s soft, breathy, (and pleasant) pop voice. 2 out of 4

New York Daily News: When you have a voice this bare, it’s up to your writer/producers to make the records hit. But overseers C. (Tricky) Stewart and Terius (The Dream) Nash haven’t found riffs, or beats, steely enough to play off Ciara’s slack tones. 2 out of 5

The Washington Post: The fine, thumping “Gimmie Dat,” with its booming bass, offers a through-line to Ciara’s crunk past. On the title track, she laments time spent on the red carpet instead of in the studio. It’s a personalized mea culpa that’s meant to make it okay to like Ciara again, a feat that remains beyond her limited powers of persuasion.

The Boston Globe: The singer works with hit-makers The-Dream and Tricky Stewart on several tracks; unfortunately, it seems they’ve saved their best hooks for their next gig. Some songs are tart and have attitude (“Basic Instinct [U Got Me],” “Girls Get Your Money”) but many are nondescript.

BBC Music: Basic Instinct is vibrant, addictive, and sleek, a calling card for modern R&B shorn of filler and gauche imitation. It’s come late, but [the album] is one of the best R&B albums of the year.

    damn, that’s some pretty harsh reviews – but only because we all know cici’s potential, and we wish that she could also see it too because let’s be real “basic instinct” is no pt. 2 “goodies”, or “the evolution”, but it’s a step up (r&b wise) from “fantasy ride” (pop brilliance for an r&b artist).

    just my opinion though.

    I was very disapointed with this album theres not enough uptempo records its mostly mid tempo and slow songs. I was waiting for that big ciara dance record the only uptempo song on the whole album thats dope is “U Got Me” and that leaked way back in august. “Gimme That” is wack, Girls Get Your Money is horrible, Turn It up isnt good i really dont know whats to talk about this album it just isnt a comeback album.

    I wanted to like this album and im rooting for cici but this just didnt do it for me… all the tracks were up-tempo except one and didnt really have and emotion or meaning just all radio songs this album is for her fans not to gain a new audience or anything … but im still rooting 4 her *Bri Shrug*

    I’m the biggest Ciara Stan in the world but this album was a disappointment. Fantasy Ride and The Evolution were everything I needed from Ciara but I still brought my 10 copies at Best Buy, iTunes, Amazon, Ciara’s Online Store but I want this era over and onto the next project.

    Still kinda disappointed . the dream music he produces is quickly fading out. Artists need to branch out. He doesnt have it anymore (mariah “Memiors”) was also both fully produced by the dream and it was very bland

    This album as a whole, the songs, the vibe, the fllow of it sonically it’s Ciara best album. But it only has a few standout tracks the rest you have to listen to and they grow on you. There aren’t really any fillers but more like she was trying to do different songs so atleast all her fans can have atleast 3-4 they love. Whether they liked Urban Ciara, Pop Ciara, R&B Ballad Ciara, or if they just wanted her to try something new. She pretty muched covered it all I just hate that they over processed her voice on some of the tracks. Her voice is already light and breathy it tends to sound weird when they do to much to her voice.

    I personally think ciara was able to go back while moving forward. This album I give 3.5/4. I love it. She’s a dominant women who knows what she wants & although her team sucks, I know she will prevail!

    - they should’ve pushed that project harder, a lot of good records on there. goodies is what put her on top in music, fantasy ride is next level. couldn’t get into the evolution.

    Yeah Fantasy Ride you could play the whole CD without skipping, that’s why I think it’s her best. They dropped the ball with that one.
    Evolution had a couple of songs I hated but I still like it more than this new one.
    Goodies first half was dope as hell but then it had too many boring songs at the end.

    the album is pretty solid to me its not blow u away good but its a great listen..Ciara did her thang i didnt skip a track on the album and its doing great on itunes R&B & Main charts w/no promo so just wait till her performances hype it up..

    Ra-Up, you got all the wrong reviews, you picked the worst ones. Metracritic gave Basic Instinct a 77, which indicates favorable reviews. Its her highest on there as The evolution got 65, fantasy ride got 61 and the site came out after goodies.

    I do wish there were more tracks, “Shut Em Up” and “I dont Care” would have make great additions and “Basic Instinct” couldve been scrapped bc it sounds too much like a mistake. I would personally give the album 3/5

    Fantasy Ride was a dope album people slept on it i dont like Basic Instinct as a whole i think the album is missing many songs that could have made it a masterpiece but it fell short. Best songs are U got Me, Ride, Speechless, and I run It. The rest of the album is just blah to me.

    If ciara had saved Like A surgeon for Basic Instinct the album would have been a MASTERPIECE. That whole Fantasy Ride album was fire hands down ciaras best album but it just didnt sell. it was a shame. Basic Instinct is a huge disapointment, no growth what so ever.

    I say 3 out of 5. The album isn’t bad but it wasn’t as good as it could have been. From the leaks I was excited. But i felt like some songs shouldn’t have been on the album because it interrupted the flow of the album. I just wish “Blauw” and “This is what love is” was on the album instead of “Girls Get Your Money” and “Turn it up” (which obviously was a last min choice). Ciara’s still got it though. She just found herself and we know we can’t get enough of it!

    I love how funny it is that everyone always beaks artists like Drake, Eminem or Kanye on this site but never Ciara. Guess what she is horrible. Her album won’t sell at all. Em had one of the highest selling albums of the year and is up for 10 grammies. Drake almost did half a mill for his first album and Kanye possibly dropped the album of the decade with Dark Fantasy. Wow everyone really needs to stop praising shitty artist like Ciara cause she is honestly horrible. I would rather listen to Wacka Flocka or Soulja Boy before I listen to her garbage.

    PART ONE: As a huge Ciara fan, I have to say that I love this album. It’s definitely some of her best work to date and as a whole it’s pretty cohesive. I wish her the best but at the same time I am just happy that she finally released the damn album. With no top 10 hit on the Hot 100, I’m actually surprised Jive didn’t keep pushing it back. Out of all her albums, I think that this is the first time that I love ALL the single she has released so far. “Ride,” “Speechless” and “Gimmie Dat” are definite standouts. I am also really feeling “Heavy Rotation,” “You Can Get It” and “Wants For Dinner.” Great album.

    Ciara won’t sell because : 1) the album is wack and 2) people don’t buy RNB and HIP HOP albums anymore (or just a few artists like EM or Kanye).

    If U want to sell U have to be Taylor Swift,Bieber, or Susan Boyle because they do some POP crap that all the white little girls and old people buy.
    Swift has no talent but she sells cause she’s white and kind and people in Utah don’t know how to download illegaly !!!!!!

Plus she’s #8 on iTunes and sold out in a lot of stores. Personally I think this is hre best album to date. I run it is classic. You can get it is ci nitch and yeah I know is a banger. Her voice is thin and the songs fit her voice. Goodies had the same amount of uptempos and evolution was too damn long. Fr was just all over the place and when she put all the leaks on it y’all were mad. Make up you minds and haters as always eat a fat one!!

    Entertainment Weekly gave this album the same grade I did! LOL. I was spot on! I do love this album though. Wish some other cuts had made. I was not disappointed like I thought I would be.

    When i first heard that song “Basic Instict” I knew she was headed in the WRONG direction. I love Ciara and her music but bottom line its like she’s moving back vs. moving forward. I think the song selection isnt her and it was a mistake to have like alot of slow songs. I was expecting alot of upbeat music. There are a couple of songs that I liked. Such as Ride,Gimmie Dat, Heavy Rotation,Speechless,Turn It Up. The rest seems like she was headed for a new sound but it doesnt work…well for me atleast. But dont get me wrong I still supported her. I got my copy today! =)

    Basic Instinct has a score of 69/100 on Metacritc which is generally favorable to positive reivews. I’ll give this album a 8.5/10 because Girls Get Your Money is aight and I expected Yeah I Know to be better, but it’s still great. I hope she can sell at least around 75k in the first week because she has talent: she writes her songs and produces some of them, she sings live and dances at the same time and creates a lot of choreo too.

    I agree with traci and g3. She should have put some of the leaked songs on the album. Like Blawu, Up and Down, Do it, Get it Girl,Ride Remix. Hopefully she puts some of these songs on a Dexule Edition or something. I still bought the album and like the album tho.
