Rap-Up.com || Nicki Minaj’s ‘Pink Friday’ Certified Platinum

Pink has turned platinum. Nicki Minaj’s debut album, Pink Friday, has been certified platinum after shipping 1 million units in the U.S. since it dropped on November 22. According to the RIAA, it received the certification on December 17, less than one month after its release.

“Pink Friday remains the #2 Rap Album and the #4 Album in the country on Billboard’s 200. Thank you for your continued support,” wrote Nicki on Twitter after her album moved up from No. 8 to 4 on this week’s Billboard 200.

Additionally, her collabo with Trey Songz, “Bottoms Up,” crosses the double-platinum threshold this week. “And to top it all off, ‘Bottoms Up’ is double platinum. S/O 2 @TreySongz who woulda thought… *sings* all around the wooorld do ya hear me?” said the Harajuku Barbie.

When the RIAA changed the certification standards to match retail distribution in August 2006, all platinum and multi-platinum awards for a digital release were withdrawn. Gold certifications, however, were not, meaning a song that was downloaded over 100,000 times and certified so by the RIAA during that time frame, retains its gold status.

As big of a Nicki fan as I am, I was worried about how her album would be received. I was hoping that it wasn’t going to be one of those hyped albums that sold big in its first week and would plummet in the following weeks. But nope, it has been a consistant seller. This is a “true” success story for a female rapper. Go Nicki and keep doing you because it has obviously payed off.

It took Hardcore 4 years to go platinum because

1) at the time it was harder for women 2 sell records ( thats why people say Kim broke down doors in Hip Hip)

2) Hardcore was banned from Wal Mart which at the time was the biggest retailer for albums ( there was no online sales in 1995)

This is good accomplishment especially as a female rapper. Why can’t people accept that? Female rap was dead for so long and nicki comes along and hangs with some of the best like Eminem and Kanye on the charts, how can you deny what she is doing?
