Like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Beyoncé before her, Christina Aguilera was the latest diva to have the honor of performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl. The blonde superstar, demurely dressed in all black, put her powerful pipes on display at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas, before the Pittsburgh Steelers took on the Green Bay Packers on Sunday (Feb. 6). Xtina made a slight blunder with some of the lyrics, but that couldn’t stop even the toughest NFL players from shedding a tear.
Watch her soaring rendition below and share your thoughts.

Although she is my favorite singer in the whole world…it’s pretty sad that she forgot the words to the National Anthem. Also, that last high note was quite dreadful. Lastly, with all of that riffing it really makes the song lose a lot of meaning. Just sing the song. Thank you.

C’mon Xtina. (ha Xtina!!!) Did you even warm up? I’m willing to bet you didn’t even sing it last night in front of the mirror. That melody had no rhyme or reason. “O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming?”
What happened to that verse?
I forgive ya girl. Shake it off!!

At a time when people need inspiration and healing in the world and in this nation, how could such a performer not care enough to get this short song right? This song is meaningful in so many ways to so many people. She could have delivered it for this generation the right way. Why not?

OK people who loved it, first of all, she didn’t sing the correct words and she left out two verses. She also sounded like she was belching beer when she hit a few of the low notes. I am usually a big fan, but she blew it, big time. Most Americans learn that song in kindergarten and never forget it. I don’t know what happened, maybe too much celebrating before the game? She was terrible!

i dare any of you to show me the ORIGINAL melody.
it was an olde english drinking song.
as soon as any one of you fucks come up with a recording of the ORIGINAL melody i will eat my tri-corner hat.
who cares if she messed up the words of a poem written by a lawyer who stole a melody.
if she would have sung this….
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
would she have been correct?
[Reply]

[Reply]
February 6th, 2011 at 5:04 pm
That was absolutely the WORST!!
She should have apologized at the end!
I thought she was talented, but now she’s in
competion with Rosanne for that pitiful
rendition of our National Anthem.
This deserves a PUBLIC apology!!!
[Reply]
February 6th, 2011 at 5:09 pm
“i dare ya,” you are partially correct, so get to eating. Francis Scott Key, a poet and a lawyer, was inspired by a battle he witnessed in the War of 1812 and wrote a poem. It was later made into a song, set to the tune of a British bar song (much like “Amazing Grace”) and was adopted as our official National Anthem later. Francis Scott Key didn’t steal the melody, he didn’t even write it as a song. Get your facts straight and eat your tri-cornered hat while you are at it. It has been sung everywhere since 1814, so the lyrics are well known to all Americans, along with the tune, of which Christina butchered both.

Eww… I used to be a big supporter of Christina. But this is horrific and embarrassing as an American. We all know her voice is not the same as it used to be.. the least she could’ve done is practiced singing it last night and today. This is one of those songs that just singing it right is beautiful, but when you try to do all that fancy stuff like holding out a note, it just sucks.

Most other artists don’t sing live, therefore they have no lyrics to remember.

Not all singers lip sinc, Christina was chosen for her talent, but she effed up big time. Not only is that the worst I have ever heard her, but she didn’t even sing the well-known lyrics correctly. It would be the equivalent of messing up the “Happy Birthday” song. If she would have spent less time trying to “personalize” the song, she could have done it beautifully without messing it up.
[Reply]
February 6th, 2011 at 6:10 pm
She totally sucked. You don’t scream out words to the Anthem like she did. Terrible and embarrassing. She owes the people in the armed forces an apology for all the screeching and lines she forgot. I don’t care if she is a celebrity, it doesn’t give her the right to butcher the Anthem. This is why our youth have no pride in their country, because of people like her who are the “supposed role models.” It was terrible and crappy.

actually “i dare ya” the melody wasn’t “stolen” until long after Keys wrote “Defence of Fort McHenry”. the “The Anacreontic Song” melody already had “americanized” veriations and “Defence of Fort McHenry” was just assimulated to the melody over time.
but… she should have rehearsed a little more (thank god it wasn’t a duet)

———-
First, I admire any artist that doesn’t auto-tune and/or lip-sync, as both are annoying. I agree that people are being somewhat heavy-handed about her performance, but to say that because she has to remember the lyrics to many songs doesn’t wash at all for me. It is NATURAL to forget because of nervousness, but please don’t use such a ridiculous excuse. Americans typically learn the national anthem, like any other country, in school – in childhood – and we heard it all the time, whether it’s at a sports event or somewhere else. We’re not allowed to forget, but it does happen. Given the fact that it’s an abbreviated form of the original, there’s hardly need for further abbreviation. She was nervous/affected some way, and she forgot. Period.
For myself, I am not jealous of any other human being on this planet, whether they’re rich, talented, beautiful, whatever. I’m objective. Look that word up. It means “not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice; based on facts; unbiased”. But there are some “haters”, yes.

I was pissed off for like 5 minutes that she messed up and then I got over it. Wanna know why? I’m still breathing, still got my own issues to deal w|, & don’t care that CHRISTINA AGUILERA fucked up lyrics to a song. Doesn’t affect me, doesn’t help me.

The national anthem is not meant to be voiced in an artists own way. It is meant to be sung one way. Express your voice all you want without changing the melody. Its the spotlight of a career to sing at the super bowl, and to not know the words is horrible. This doesnt make her a bad person or anything like that, but it is a terrible thing to mess up. If you get this honor, you better be ready to perform well. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE SAYING she did a great job and she sounded good… You are exactly what is wrong with the USA. If i’m a golfer and shoot 20 over par did I do good? Absolutly not! Your the people who keep telling their kids are great singers and when its time to sing, they get embarrassed! Shame on anyone who says she did good. Lets stop keeping score in sports too, because its all about trying your best right? We are becoming a nation of “average is ok”! Embarrassing America!
[Reply]
February 6th, 2011 at 10:59 pm
Why don’t the people that are asked to sing the National Anthem just sing it the way it was intended to be sung. Don’t add anything to it. If you want to add some zing to a song…do it to one of your own songs. I have heard people on American Idol sing better than Christina. I guess I’m not as upset with her forgetting the words because I truley believe that you can get caught up in the moment. Since mistakes can and have happened, why don’t they put a teleprompter out there on the field for the singer to glance at if needed. It should would relieve a lot of stress on the performer and then we all would get to see a better more respectable performance. Again, as for her changing the melody and making the song hers….no excuses. Just sing it the way the country deserves to hear it.

I don’t think it was one of her better performances. Apparently, a lot of people don’t either. I think her problem is that her personal life problems have affected her singing/career. There are reports that she is drinking heavily- to me-my thought what is she on?-she seemed out of it to me. I like the anthem sung straight up- Ms. Martina McBride’s version at the AFC championship was great and I am not a big fan of Xtina but let’s hope she gets herself back together- I think she is adrift right now. But everyone makes mistakes so let’s cut her some slack. And all of you people saying mean things are acting very un_American like to me. There is so much negativity and mean-spirited comments- that’s what’s wrong with America today.

LMAO at people being so mad at Christina for singing the song in her own style. Poor envious fools!
Christina can and WILL sing the national anthem how she wants to. The same YOU are all allowed to sing it how you want to. Christina is NOT your puppet.
You are all enraged by the fact that Christina is extremely talented. Stop pretending that you’re upset over a small lyrical mistake from a National Anthem that was sung for a football game. You’re just mad that Christina is amazingly gifted.
Therefore, you fail. Xtina owns you.
