“American Idol” winner Fantasia returned to her alma mater to serve up her doo-wop-inspired single “Collard Greens and Cornbread” on Thursday’s show. “Is it all right if we take it back old school, ‘Idol’?” asked the soulful songstress, shimmering in a floor-length red gown. See what Tasia’s got cookin’ below.

questionable sing choice no? I would have went with “falling in love tonight”

i don’t think falling in love tonight is single material. it’s a bit slow for what’s going on in music, granted this is a slower song itself.. it’s a different vibe, it’s catchy.

@Joseph McCoy, @musak, falling in love tonight is one of the BETTER songs on the album, even though the entire album is very strong. It won several grammys for a reason right?

@fantasiafan, it won ONE Grammy. While I wish it won more, I’m a HUGE Fantasia fan. She’s only a recipient of one Grammy. No matter what song Fantasia chooses, it will strictly be for R&B fan in my opinion. Collard Greens & Corn Bread gives us real good throwback R&B.

@Sleazy, I dont think America votes on skin color. I think Thia and Naima should have went home. Thia was not original at all and Naima just couldnt sing and was cheesey sometimes. Scotty has a unique deep voice and Stefano is good too. I think America votes on the judges opinions if anything. Thia and Naima were the only two people who got bad remarks from the judges Wednesday.

WTF, I like soul food but come on how commercial do you think this crap is going to be …. pay a songwriter to write some songs for this great talent. Simon must be scratching his head about this after all of the industry connections she has… she chooses to write her own crappy song…
[Reply]

I don’t understand why people don’t like falling in love tonight?!?!? i think it’s very commercial. Back to Me was amazing, the best R&B album of the year, but Collard Greens is not commercial. Pop music and top 40 will definitely not accept it, and get it. I don’t even think Urban radio will, but they’re accepting garbage nowadays anyway. either way, she KILLED this performance, like always. god bless you fantasia.

Ok, let me stop replying to people’s IGNORANT comments. Do your research before you say stupid stuff. I completely agree w/ @fantasiafan. Collard Greens & Cornbread is not at all commercial, while I feel like Falling in Love Tonight is. But, what I will say is, I believe Fantasia & her people have given up on trying to be on the pop top 40. Fans of real soulful R&B LOVE Collard Greens, that’s that good throwback like R. Kelly’s “When A Woman Loves.” ‘Tasia is the poster child for R&B & if that’s not commercial enough for the world, please feel free to go buy F.A.M.E.

I was thinking about this song and the part when she sings “I never put up with bs from anyone but I
take it from you along with the other lyrics I thought about the women on comedy shows back in the day that put up with their husbands junk like Edith putting up with Archie but he’s her sweet potatoe pie and I think he knew she wasn’t going anywhere because she’s so in love with him and he her because he knows he’s better than her momma’s favorite dish she likes. Then theres Louise with George come on Louise put up with a lot of bs with him but he’s her sweet potatoe pie and he knows it that’s why she put up with him and let’s face it I can hear him tell her you ain’t going nowhere because I’m better than your momm’s collard greens and corn bread.
Then theres Alice with Ralph in the honeymooners he’s always talking about to the moon alice pretending he wanted to hit her but never would she put up with him as well because like the others she loves him and he her and if her momma did cook collard greens and cornbread which was one of her favorite foods or his he’d say he’s better than that.
I know my husband told me his love was better than my momma’s fried chichen turnip greens and sweet potatoes! I laughed and said you’re up there with it then said yeah and you’re my sweetpotatoe pie like I’m his banana puddin no joke!
