Diddy, Jay-Z Compete to Sign Odd Future![]() The race to ink a record deal with Odd Future is heating up. The hip-hop collective is currently fielding offers from Roc Nation’s Jay-Z, Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine, SRC Records’ Steve Rifkind, and Diddy.
According to Page Six, the Bad Boy mogul is reportedly “desperate to sign the group to prove that he’s onto something hot.” The West Coast outfit, led by Tyler, the Creator, is playing hardball, making each industry executive bow to their demands. After Rifkind reached out to the group, Tyler only agreed to meet with him if he provided them with “Randy’s Donuts, swivel chairs, and a megaphone.” Diddy took a more active approach, orchestrating a meeting between Tyler and Justin Bieber after he demanded to link up with the teen heartthrob. According to a source, “Tyler asked Diddy for access to Justin, so he pulled strings,” while Odd Future’s rep confirmed that “Tyler did meet with Justin, and Diddy helped make it happen.” The unsigned posse has been making waves in the industry over the past few months. Kanye West branded Tyler’s controversial video for “Yonkers” as the “video of 2011,” while R&B singer-songwriter Frank Ocean has hit the studio with Beyoncé to record tracks for her upcoming fourth LP. @bey forever, Omg, you’re so right. This is what I was going to say. The only person that gets promotion in Bad Boy is Diddy himself, he expects others to do all the work for themselves, but sometimes you need that push. They obviously won’t have as many connections as he does.

Is this what Hip Hop has come to? People begging for attention in their music and giving labels the run around? I understand playing hardball but these spoiled brats make a joke of Hip Hop. They are a joke. Kids trying to get attention by being negative about everything and a label wants to get money off of all of the attention they’re getting. I understand business is business and it’s all about the $ but that’s ridiculous. They need to tone it down to break into mainstream and if they do get signed, all of them won’t make it, it’ll mainly be all about Tyler. I will never understand them or their music or the method to their madness? What am I missing? I don’t get it. I guess I should get it by now but I don’t. Since I don’t it must not be all that important.

@IKNOWTHETRUTH, They’re a group of individual rappers, so they all rap differently. Listen to there Radical mixtape before you judge them, off of what? Yonkers? Tyler is mainly the only one who raps like the old Slim Shady, and sometimes Earl, but not the other members. If you actually listened to them, you’d know that. They’re already making money without being signed, so if your opinion actually mattered it still wouldn’t stop them from being famous.

Some artist make careers out of commanding peoples attention and outrageous antics …. *cough* Eminem *cough*.
People said the exact same thing about him too.
I think it adds to their artistic character.

I hope they stay away from all of these labels honestly and remain self represented. However, if Christmas can’t come early, they should sign with Interscope. Diddy is just bad when it comes to owning and representing other artists. Jay-Z still has J. Cole and we’ve YET to hear any new material from him regarding his debut album. SRC owns Melanie Fiona, Shontelle, David Banner (previously) etc. and I don’t think Odd Future belongs with them. Yes Interscope is very mainstream, which this group just shouldn’t do because I will lose all faith in the record labels, but it’s also very diverse (B.E.P., Mary J. Blige, All-American Rejects, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc.)
Guess we’ll just wait and see.

I like OF but they need to tone that down. They really haven’t done ANYTHING to make demands even if it is just a joke. No diddy is still bad boy but a sect of interscope. Jimmy lovine is the head of the major label. If ANY label they need to sign with it needs to be interscope. GAGA..EMINEM..ENOUGH SAID. LOVINE is KNOWN for making stars. Diddy is a joke he takes all his artists money and they disappear after 2 years at the most. Jayz has yet to prove he can make a star. Jcole yet to see his debut album and willow smith just got limelight frankly because of her father. Everyone else on that label is unknowns. INTERSCOPE

Diddy/Bad Boy are horrible! If you go there, you don’t want a career. You’re a vehicle to promote Puff for a few months and you’re done.

[Reply]
April 4th, 2011 at 3:43 pm
They should go with Jay-Z or interscope, because that will be best. Diddy lets his artist have one hit. Then he doesnt promote their second single causing it to flop. Without more than one hit, their album flops. Then IF they get a second album, it gets no promo. That’s the Diddy formula.

They need to stay independent because signing to a label will mean that they get regulations and they go through media training.. in other words OFWGKTA won’t be the same because they’ll have to make “radio” material most likely… plus diddy has been known for being a douche with his artists (ei. day 26, danity kane, lil kim) jay z promotes nobody unless you’re already known (ei. J Electronica, J Cole etc.)

I just don’t agree with rapping about rape or disrespecting the man upstairs. If they have good music, that’s fine, but the ridiculous videos with the drug mixing and drinking and vomiting and blood always in their visuals is enough. Everywhere you turn one of them is puking or something. I do like Frank Ocean and don’t understand why he’s associated with those idiots. Eminem raps about real life and not just being outrageous. Tyler needs to rap about life and stop being so extreme about everything. They need to come down to earth and be real and talk about life.

Diddy would be the worst option followed by Mr. Jimmy Iovine. SRC would be an ok fit, as well as Roc Nation, only because Steve Rifkin would give them the freedom. And Jay, he feeds of bad publicity as any good businessman would do, but with that, I think Jay-Z would only be using them for his own company name. If I really had an opinion on where they should go……… It’s probably be Stones Throw Records. They would get all the freedom they want and get killer beats, not that they don’t already. Plus it’s CEO is Peanut Butter Wolf… need I say more…. Good luck to OFWGKTA since I know they are athiest. Free Earl!

Jay Z will never make any of his artist famous because he’s too busy jacking their swag. Hence Kanye West, Jay Sean and Frank Ocean. Jay and his wife have done this their whole career. Signing with Diddy would be career suicide. With a personality like Tylers he would be better going the independant route like his elders NWA, Ice Cube did in the past before they all separated. I don’t think he has the perdonality to go mainstream and I think he knows that.
