Common Performs Poetry at the White House [Video]

Common

Common came under attack from conservative media outlets this week after he was booked to perform at the White House. Fox News and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin criticized First Lady Michelle Obama’s decision to include him in a poetry reading, citing some of his past lyrics and labeling him “vile.” But despite the controversy, the Chicago rapper’s invitation stood.

“Politics is politics and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I respect that,” wrote Common, who’s been a longtime supporter of President Obama. “The one thing that shouldn’t be questioned is my support for the police officers and troops that protect us every day. Peace yall!”

Dressed in a beige suit, he performed a spoken word piece with a DJ in celebration of American poetry and prose. “Thank you and God bless. I appreciate being here,” a grateful Common told the audience.

    Outstanding. People make the misconception that rappers are evil or morally wrong, because their talking, writing, and singing of what’s happening around them. The problem isn’t rappers, it’s society treating lower income people as second class citizens.

    Palin and FOX only say what they think their audience wants to hear as far as Neocon propaganda. This imprudent commentary has caused damage to the world view of America including critical comments such as this which expose not only racism and bigotry but the obtuse world-view of the people this kind of rhetoric seems fit to represent. I was compelled to create a visual commentary about this very thing on my artist’s blog.

    Why not mention that the NYPD and the New Jersey Policemens Union protested this turds appearance? Because you want it to slam Palin and Republicans. You ‘rats should be ashamed

    @Buster Knuhts,

    The only reason the police union protested was because Fox News turned a non-story into controversy.

    I read some of the lyrics of this “rapper” and I do find it odd that this would be the selection to perform. He lyrics are about killing a former president, and the use racial slurs that have been condemned by this very administration. The press said he was a conscious rapper and they dont agree with all he says. Interesting how when the Pastor Donnie Mcclurkin shared his thoughts on homosexuality at an Obama rally several years ago, he was removed because Obama disagreed with his views.

    @Al DARROW,

    Common has a propensity of speaking in third person coming from a poetic background. He’ll say something like “My n*ggas rolled up and smacked him with an Uzi” playing a specific character that faces the consequences of his actions by the end of the song. Thereby motivating misguided youth from falling into street life.

    Common has dedicated his life to expressing himself and elevating love. A man with such positive energy being attacked so maliciously is scary to me. Are people really that filled with hate?

    Loved it. Its sad Fox News is even trying to make something out of it. Nothing to make anything out of. I guess a 60% approval rating going into an election season has them flipping out and that’s just sad.

    Common is one of the most poetic rappers. He speaks from the heart and is honest. Common doesn’t sugar coat anything and that’s why he’s held at such a high standard lyrically. He makes you think self-consciously. He came from the Southside, so he’s going to speak like he did. The issues he speaks about and the words used are real for me and a lot of black people. Common is respectful of women, elders and is always lending a hand. Why can’t he speak about what’s real to him? Taylor Swift doesn’t talk about much, but what she talks about is real to her even if its about white horses and princesses.

  9. Hmm.

    Common is a great rapper. He spread positive rhymes. He don’t talk about blink blink in his music. Still Fox News will find something to explore with this Black man.

    Oh yeah? Then prove it, rapper. You can’t have it both ways. You’re on one side or the other, no gray areas. If you think it’s okay to kill cops, then say so and stand on your own two feet. Apparently, you have already said so.

    Don’t give me that crap about supporting peace officers when you talk about killing them. That makes you a hypocrite.

    You and everyone else, take your stand. No more bullshit. You want to hang left, do it. You want to hang right, do it.

    But don’t think for a minute that it’s going to end all rainbows and skittle shitting unicorns.

    Civil war.

    So it’s perfectly A-OK with bitter loser Palin, the cheerleading Hater In Chief Of America, that her best buddy whom she has appeared with and supported, Ted Nugent , who is a draft dodging chicken hawk burnt out aging one-hit-wonder rocker viciously rages onstage at the President of the United States that he’s a piece of s*** and to suck on his machine gun??? Then he calls our Secretary of State a “worthless b**ch. That’s okay with you Mrs. Palin isn’t it….I’m sure you approved when you smiled and smirked the same way you did when your adoring audience, some of whom held stuffed toy monkeys with Obama’s name on them, yelled “Kill Him!”.

    Now THAT is the definition of “vile”.
