Rap-Up.com || Chris Brown Leads BET Awards 2011 Nominations

What a difference a year makes. Last year, Chris Brown had a breakdown onstage while performing his emotional tribute to Michael Jackson at the BET Awards. Now the R&B superstar leads the pack with six nominations at the BET Awards 2011, including Video of the Year and Best Male R&B Artist. His collaborator Lil Wayne follows with five nods, while Rihanna, Drake, and Kanye West score four apiece.

In the coveted Video of the Year category, Chris’ “Look at Me Now” featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes will compete against Kanye West and Pusha T’s “Runaway,” Keri Hilson’s “Pretty Girl Rock,” B.o.B and Hayley Williams’ “Airplanes,” Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair,” and Marsha Ambrosius’ “Far Away.”

Other artists who picked up multiple nominations include Nicki Minaj, Marsha Ambrosius, B.o.B, Busta Rhymes, and Willow Smith.

The BET Awards 2011 will air live from Los Angeles on June 26 hosted by comedian Kevin Hart. Check below for a full list of nominees.

The BET Awards is the only award show that I basically like. I love it that the show is geared around talented and accomplished African Americans that deserve to be nominated and nominated for their work, all the others are bullshit! I feel as though Monica should have been in the Best Female R&B category, no offense but Rihanna is more Pop than she is R&B. And CB, I hope he wins the majority of his nominations specially Male R&B. Congrats to all the nominees though!

I love R & B but its funny how every keep saying Fantasia and others got rob but do the urban community go out and buy their album or down load their singles, no they do not. Most of the people that BET nominated dominated the urban charts and mainstream charts and most of them have platinum singles from digital downloads. why every claiming about R&B artist no one is buying their singles and albums. Usher, Chris and Trey albums went gold and singles went platinum. Rihanna, Beyonce went platinum. So someone is buying their albums and singles and keep them receiving nominations. The other artist didn’t do as well on the charts and the charts are about sells. So if you want them nominated go buy their albums and download their singles on itunes.

@zania, I agree with the first part of your comment regarding the lack of support that “we” give to true r&b artists. I disagree that the BET Awards should be about charts & sales though. Artists who were snubbed like Tank, R Kelly, El DeBarge, Keyshia, Jazmine, Chrisette Michelle, Monica, Fantasia, Janelle Monae, Faith Evans & Trina all work just as hard (if not harder) than the mainstream artists who went platinum and get recognition. I believe it is the responsibility of a station like BET to recognize them and their efforts.

VV Brown def. deserves to win. Wiz Khalifa and Bruno are the only real competition becuz their actual albums came out and did pretty well, but I love J.Cole (sorry you just need to put your damn foot down with Jigga and tell him to release your shit). Nicki Minaj is once again competing against no names, so she’s only winning becuz they put her in a category with no at her caliber, if I was her I’d be mad, becuz it takes away the real value of winning.

nicki has no competition for the female rap category so thats her award
I love bey and she does do crossover r&b/pop so i understand her being in that category normally but not this time when she hasnt even had a song out!

until recently rihanna music wasnt even played on r&b stations unless a rapper was on the song with her

Plus Em has been nominated in the past so that makes no sense…and the BET awards are racist if they exclude based on race…the awards should be given out to who the best in each category is. I understand recognizing black actors because they typically don’t get the shine white actors do. R&B is a primarily black field so that makes sense as well…Rap is also a primarily black field, it just so happens that a white man rules the rap game…so give him his due and stop excluding him based on his race!

It seems like real singers get overlook. I’m talking about real R&B SINGERS who don’t sell their souls out to go mainstream. Fantasia, Jazmine Sullivan, Monica, R. Kelly, Tank, Eric Benet and Keyshia Cole should have been nominated.

I hope Marsha or Jennifer Hudson wins the Best Female R&B Artist. They are both the realest singers. And Kimberly Elise should have been nominated for Best Actress. Her performance in For Colored Girls was simply amazing. Kimberly gave an Oscar-worthy performance. Bow Wow should have been nominated for Best Actor for his performance in Madea’s Big Happy Family

Alin, the tube Tech is one of my favorite tracking compressors for vocals, it is true. With your vocal chain of 1081 and C800 (a great choice I might add) start with the threshold down (as in off) and gain at 0db and have the meters looking at input (you could also accomplish this balanced setting by not engaging the compressor have it bypassed). Then looking at the VU meter, have the average level come in a bit under 0db. That’s one of the great features of using a CL-1B with a preamp like the neve you can use it’s input metering to look at the level straight off the pre. I love that. Once you have a nice level set there, engage the compressor, by starting to dial the threshold until you see a reduction at the peaks of the program. I usually use a 3:1 compression while tracking, and a medium fast attack and a pretty fast release with the fix/manual engaged. This is fine tuned depending on the style of the song (pop vs R&B) and also based on the tempo of the song .usually faster attacks/releases on faster songs, and longer/slower on ballads. Hope that gets you started .just a note about the CL-1b..the knobs are a bit delicate and you can get some might big changes while turning, as they aren’t stepped slowly sweep until it’s sounding good, then maybe mark your favorite spots so you can find them again later. SteveJoe thanks for the question, i appreciate you comment. For me, the main element of working on consoles that I miss over mixing in the box is the headroom available during the mixdown. Try as I might I always feel i’m topping out the stereo bus inside of protools very quickly, and having to adjust down my music levels, when on a desk I can just keep pushing the faders higher and still have plenty more to go. Of course it’s nice to have the ease of patching and routing on each channel, like you mentioned, but I’m pretty comfortable with that in ProTools too but it’s the summing of the stereo signal that I feel gets a bit cheated in the box. It really isnt’ a SONICS thing, as I think the summing sounds okay but it’s all about that headroom. A lot of my favorite mix engineers I really look up to are hybrid style mixers, and their smashing beats they mix sound great not only because of their eq choices, but I KNOW having that headroom of a desk is really putting it in my face. If budgets allow, I’m always trying to work on an SSL (4000g has the best headroom in my opinion! I love that console) so I can bring the best out in my mixes. There is a sonic difference too when working on the board .and each desk has it’s own thing about it. A lot of that is the eq color and choice and how repeated use of that across many channels with color you mix accordingly. Also the overall feel of a desk. For my money, the Low end is a bit smoother and rounder on SSL 9000js, with there is a great mid range energy that occurs on SSL 4000g desks. All these things go well together to make up a great mix .but first and foremost, if the song isn’t great, it doesn’t matter what desk you are mixing on! Hope that clears it up a bit.
