Rap-Up TV: Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins Shares Advice for Ciara

After the fall out with her label Jive Records, industry watchers are keeping close tabs on Ciara’s next move. Super-producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins recently met up with the singer to discuss her future and let us in on their talks.

“I had a meeting with her about what her future holds and I told her I was there if she ever needed my creative juices, so hopefully me and her get in the studio and work,” he told Rap-Up TV at the BMI Pop Music Awards.

While there are currently no plans to have her sign to his label, he did offer his advice. “We had a long talk. I think she just has to get back to where she started,” he explained. “She had a lane that was specifically hers—that ghetto urban lane with the 808s. No female was doing that and she had it. I think if she just gets back to that, goes back to the blueprint…”

Darkchild, who produced her 2007 collaboration with 50 Cent “Can’t Leave ‘Em Alone,” told CiCi to remain true to herself. “I encouraged her when I met with her, just stick to the roots—stick to who you are. Don’t let nobody change you.”

    Epic fail.

They tried to get back to basics with the LAST album and it didn’t work.

Is Darkchild seriously telling her to do that again? She needs to evolve, not regress!

@The Prophet Blog, *Agrees* she just needs to make great music and be on a supportive label that will back her. Point. Blank. Period.

@Dave, I agree. The industry has evolved and growth with reinvention has become an expectation of aspiring iconic artist. Now, as respector of artistry, I think the music artist should be confident enough to lead their careers from within and then consider others perspective. As a consumer, we want to feel that the artist knows what they are doing with their art and expose us to it. If Ciara wants to evolve & try different types of music do it! But she needs to own her changes, make sure it good and not apologize for it. It’s art ppl. Art is abstract. Ciara’s celebrity, lack of support, Keri Hilson making her look foolish and not owning her decisions killed her career. Beyonce just took a huge risk w/ run the world & did it with all of her past leading singles. Everybody questioned her judgment but her believing in herself while making sure the product was good, won us over. Whether we want to admit it or not, Ciara was a created singer & didn’t really get to know who she was or her sound. Us witnessing her grow like normal humans turned
us off b/c she looked like an awarding winning pilot that suddenly announced he didn’t really now how to fly in the middle of a flight. Get to know self, perfect that and how it will translate musically then go! Ciara is not the same ghetto urban girl any more so they need to stop forcing her to do something she doesn’t want to b/c she won’t own it. Ci= new life Janet. That’s urban, pop, dance queen. In closing, I need to be somebody’s A&R./lol

I didn’t even get a “Goodies” vibe from “Basic Instinct” though. That really wasn’t even going back to her roots… that was almost experimental. It seemed like a huge step down from the Evolution album. I honestly believe Fantasy Ride was heading in the right direction, but the project was mishandled so poorly. I know she can do better. Drop a mixtape and see what type of songs get a good reaction or something.

I Believe Her Last Album Could Done Well If Her Label Would Of Supporter Her.Her Label Made Her Change Her Sound Doing Fantasy Ride And PPl Wasn’t Feeling That!!! So She Went Back To Her Roots And Label Didn’t Want That Ciara They Wanted That Pop Ciara So They Didn’t Supporter Her At All1!! I Believe She Can Be Bck On Top With Right Label Who Going Support Her

i agree with both coments this is my thing ppl say or we want ciara to grow and explore differnt sounds but aat the end of the day she did that and got nothing in return then yall say yall want her back to her roots she did that and got nothing come on now enough is enough ciara is talent and beautiful she just needs the label support and for someone to market her right shes a threat to alot of the others chicks in the game dancing wise i love cc shes not the greatest singers but one thing she does do is give her all and put on a damn good show regardless to what anyone has to say ill always support her nuff said

@neverever2009, She didn’t really explore different sounds on her last album. She explored a ‘slightly’ different sound and that wasn’t enough. If she’s gonna go there she needs to go ALL THE WAY there.

A full out Urban album at this time for a real entertainer/performer like Ciara will not work. She needs an album like Chris Brown Fame/I Am Sasha Fierce where she is sending out two singles. Her last song on pop radio was LSM in Feb 2009. That is a long time ago. I think a 14 track album with 11 urban songs(4 of which can crosover) and 3 pop records would do. She is too talented to not be headlining worldwide. She is one of the best performers and in order to stay afloat you have to adapt to the climate but keep your fanbase.

I agree with you guys. Rodney Jerkins saying that she needs to go back to the sound that she started with is bad advice IMO. When she first started, the crunk/808 sound is what pushed her to the top but that sound is dead now. She just needs to keep making good dance music and I think she’ll be good. She has stage presence so whatever sound will help showcase that will make her successful again. Regardless, I just hope she chooses a label that will push her projects well enough.

I agree with Marcus in the fact that “Fantasy Ride” really was a step in the right direction. It was half urban and half pop. It was just pushed back almost half a year and when the final tracklisting was announced, more than half the tracks had been leaked 8 months prior. “Basic Instinct” was good too, but oh my lord everything about the handling of that album was disaterous. If they would’ve kept the release date in August, I guarantee it would’ve at least made a top 10 debut.

    [Reply]

  9. Diane

Kyle, EXACTLY. Had they released the album August 2010 like it was supposed to have been released then people would be singing her praises. She needs a combination of Urban and Pop

  10. Will

That crunk sound is completely dead now that was back in 2003 not even Usher has that sound anymore and when “Yeah” came out it was an instant smash cause it had that Lil jon crunk sound that was also gave to ciara. What Ciara needs to do is get in the studio with producers who can give her new sound that can evolve her career because at this point going back to basics aint gonna do shit for her. Get in the studio with Bangladesh and Lex Luger, the closest to that sound your going to get. Even the new upcoming producers have heat u need to work with producers who are hungry and dont already have huge success because they will just give you the sound that everyone else has. Remember That.

ciara just needs to find a balance in between the evolution and fantasy ride sound still keep that urban root and have crossover appeal dont listen to darkchild

having a record, like chris brown’s f.a.m.e will do her justice, she needs to do half urban and half pop,. she can appeal to both audiences, heavy urban beats and pop cathy songs, like her fantasy ride, which was her best record, i feel that ciara has potiential with a new label, new managment and evovleing her sound into a international r&b/pop sensenation that she is, she is has crossover appeal, and can dance her butt off, ciara you can do it, lol!!

It’s hard to say where, Ciara should go next for her career in the beginning ((Goodies)) she was hot after that, I don’t know ((Evolution)) was my favorite album after ((Goodies))…. Now I can’t say who fault it is, but Ciara has been a flop nowadays no shade I’m still a fan over the years she has put out good “tracks” there is something missing so I say to Ciara sit down think hard about your career and pray over it only god can lead you in the right way.

  16. WonderLand19

First off, she needs a GANGSTER managment and Songwriting team like Rihanna.
if she wants to be international, she needs to be both urban and pop.
furthermore, she needs to be seen with the right people. Up her style so she can land Fashion Covers like Elle,Instyle or even Wonderland.
Plus, she needs to release new music asap. like this year. If she can release a HOT!! mixtape she can then create some buzz. BUZZ will sell the records.
If she does this then she can be at the top with the likes of Brit,Gaga,Bey,rihanna,Keri and shake off this ‘C-ERROR’period of her life. REAL talk!

  17. kiki

She does not need to go back to the ‘goodies’ era it came in quick and died down fast ‘the evolution’ was her peak and followed well ‘fantasty ride’. like most are saying music is everchanging plus artits that were fresh from 2003 -2007 are having a hard time competing with the 2008 – 2010 ones. I’m glad Ciara is a fighter and is pursuing more options, for me the only way she can go is up , she will have to do a long hard think and come back at the right time. I’m routing for her.

in respone to darkchild she should not collaborate with him for a long time, used to like his sound but sometimes it becomes too much.

    [Reply]

  18. Name Here

If Ciara wants her carrer back she needs to create a ciara version of beyonce’s IMSF this year with some crunk elements untill then she is stil C-ERROR

Basic Instinct was no where near back to basic for ciara in all honesty. Now if those unreleased tracks wouldve made the album it wouldve been a hit. What ci needs is better direction. With ciara’s status her music will promote it self, she just have to deliever the hits and next time her album shouldn’t sound like just a good debut album

I agree with all these comments on here! It’s actually nice coming to a blog where people aren’t BASHING the artists! Everyone is giving good advice! I hope magically Ciara see’s this and takes what everybody says to heart.
Side Note: Why can’t most post comments be like this!!!! it’s much more pleasent.

Also I really believed that Gimmie Dat should’ve been the first single for Urban and that Turn it up should’ve been the first single sent to both Mainstream and Urban.

The problem with ciara is 90% of her career is dancing.so when she’s doing an album, she’s just thinking about dance tracks. she just needs to do music thats sounds good and let the dancing come later. I know just like Janet, she has to use dancing to cover for the weak voice, but she depends on dancing too much. do music first the think dancing after

I hear what he’s saying. IN a way he’s kinda right. Her first album Goodies was like nothing I’d ever heard or seen. Ciara definitely stood out. On the other hand, her style did change on Evolution of Ciara and she had great success with that too. I really can’t wait to hear and see what Ciara does next. HOpefully she’ll be able to start all over with a new label that will give her more creative control. Just let her a Jamaica take it there. She and Darkchild definitely gotta work together again as well.

  26. Jay

…and I also agree about some of CIara’s unreleased tracks being some of her strongest. Songs like Echo should’ve been dropped as a first or sec single. On top of that her song Work would’ve been a huge hit if it hadn’t leaked so freakin early and if it was released as a first or sec single. Same thing with Turntables. Just my opinion.

My girl Cici needs to come with the UNDENIABLE KNOCK! Crazy Melody, and uptempo don’t have to be uber fast but fast enough with proper promotion, few singles like that pop and rnb or pop or just urban bangers that will work on pop radio. Then she is set. Something like a Hotline ShutEmUp Turntables Gimmie Dat SOMETHING!

But “ghetto urban lane” is not where it’s at anymore. People who just accept what the mainstream feeds them (read: pop) aren’t into real urban music unless it’s heavily laced with pop. smh But if she can do it and win with it then all the best for her!!!

  30. ThatGuy

Worst advice EVER!!! She already tried to go back to her original sound and that didn’t work out for her. And he produced “Can’t Leave ‘Em Alone” and that song wasn’t even that good. Ciara just needs to do whatever it is she wants, try out new sounds, and see what works for her. She needs to find her niche, not go back to what hasn’t been working.
