Rap-Up TV: Dawn Richard Announces Solo Plans

After years of remaining in the shadows, Dawn Richard’s moment has arrived. The Dirty Money singer-songwriter is ready to fly solo with her first album. She exclusively revealed the title to Rap-Up TV and gave us a first listen to a couple tracks, including the whimsical intro “Hollywood Story” (Rob Holliday) and “Running from Sane” (D’Mile), the latter of which was inspired by Phil Collins and Meat Loaf.

The former Danity Kane member explained that the conceptual project, due on Bad Boy, will be a trilogy with the first release GoldenHeart coming in late 2011/early 2012 with BlackHeart and RedemptionHeart to follow.

Her fans (or “Hearts” as she calls them) got a taste of what’s to come with her previously released mixtape A Tell Tale Heart, but she’s excited to share her complete vision with them.

“The last six years have been a battle for people to understand and conform me into what they really want me to be and I’ve kind of had to protect that throughout this whole journey,” said the New Orleans native. “It’s kind of the story of me protecting this golden heart, which really kind of symbolizes my own heart and my passion for this music thing and really who I am.”

After appearing in two successful groups, it’s time for Dawn’s voice to be heard. “It’s so exciting for me right now. I’m coming into my own. I’m deciding to say I really don’t care if you think I’m not pretty enough or sexy enough or you don’t think the sound is dope enough. I’m really falling in love with who I am and falling in love with the concept of what I’m choosing to do.”

    i liked her mixtape.
but, no shade just being real, she looks thrashed in this interview clip & she’ll need to polish that shit up if she plans on competing with some of these females out here.

& additionally, she needs to come with something different in terms of album titling, it’s always about ‘heart’ like, that’s getting old. & the point of being an artist these days is to be versatile & compete creatively. we’ll see what she has in store for the album, i hope diddy doesn’t shelve her shit on some cheri dennis shit. good luck dawn.

@jeremydante, Apparently you didn’t listen or watch the interview but were still first to comment. She talks about haters just like you. It’s always the men. Why?

    jeremydante Reply:

@Jana, im saying from a marketing stand point, she needs to dot her ‘i’s’ & cross her ‘t’s’ & okay, im a hater, yet & still i bought every DK album & supported her mixtape.

okay..?! sit the fuck down when im being honest from a business stand point!

    huh? Reply:

@jeremydante, what do you know about marketing? why should anyone take business advice from you? all i see from you is criticism.

@huh?, He’s right! Jeremy you’re right, She could have polished her look a bit more for the interview, it’s okay to look like that when you are not doing any press but i mean come on, her competition would never look like that in an interview. From a business standpoint, why would anyone want to market someone who looks like that in an interview?

Loved the mixtape, “hey”, & “me, myself and y” are great tracks, so i wish her the best with her solo career. she has the talent!

@Credits, people like you are the problem. this is exactly what dawn is saying. you place the focus on her looks and not the music and are so quick to judge. why are you so focused on looks?

    The Dramatikan Reply:

@jeremydante, but didnt she say that she doesnt care if someone doesnt like this that and the other…she’s doing her music for the one that see beauty in her….not her look lol

@The Dramatikan, carelessness doesn’t chart & when you don’t chart, you don’t keep you contract. my thing is this, don’t enter into an image driven industry saying you don’t care- it wont work.

@The Dramatikan, She is very articulate and she has quite the creativity when explaining her trilogy concept in this interview, i actually get it! I don’t care about her makeup but there is a difference between looking like you’re not wearing makeup and looking like you just rolled out of bed. This is not so much about her “look” but how she presented herself.

@jeremydante, This girl (Dawn) is talking about her solo album and coming into her own. And your dumb ass is talking about the way she looks, get a life. Dawn has looked nice plenty of times. And this girl has been featured on Italia Vogue website about her style. And it’s the same style yall haters knock! Trust me her style will be on point, watch. Yall hate on Dawn because of Diddy! Let’s just be real!

I love Dawn. She’s very driven & humble. Regardless if you think she’s not “pretty” according to society’s standards, or if you think she’s never gonna be relevant, she does not stop. She’s well-rounded & that’s what you need in this industry! She can write, sing, dance, produce a little, she knows how to arrange vocals (download her mixtape off of get blog & hear for yourself!). She’s got her own comic book & she’s business savvy. And even on her off-days, she’s in the studio. She is hungry & wants it bad. Really bad. I respect her & support anyone who trusts themselves as an artist, instead of trying to fit in a box.

Wow I wonder how she will really put this story into songs. Usually people talk about a certain story that they want their album to portray but it’s just a bunch of love/club songs that don’t really convey the story that they were claimed they would.

I liked a good amount of the mixtape and I didn’t see a story on there but it was dope. I’m interested to see how this turns out.

    snlful Reply:

@Phoenix_Wright, You didn’t get the story from superman, let love, me myself and I, Bulletproof, broken record or These tears? Yes there was a common theme of heart break and strength but the format showed a war dance in DK, finding Que, their obvious rough patch, a call for open hearts and finally drawing on strength she gain from Katrina.

    [Reply]

    Phoenix_Wright Reply:

@snlful, I guess but when there are other songs like Runway, Vibrate, and Biggest Fan (all which are cool) it doesn’t sound like story all the way through.

I wish her all the best. Anyone venturing into the music business in this day and age needs encouragement and not discouragement. Going for your dream is courageous and she should be commended for her bravery.

I believe she is a very talented young woman, but I just hope that she has some “build-up” PR to her releasing her cd, like features on big artists’ songs or something, so that she preps a foundation and platform to come out on.

I would just love to see her succeed, she seems very humble and she does work really hard…good luck Dawn!

im glad shes stepping out of diddys shadow again but, Dawn please put on a one coloured weave get rid of that damn blonde looks a mess.

    [Reply]

    Sara Reply:

@Tiffany, LOL If Diddy would do one thing I wish he’d afford her a Cassie type budget and glam team on a 24 hr basis. To be fair to her years of bad weaves f’d up her edges so she is limited when it comes to style and color. This look was tour based and I believe the color is to cover the thinning. She’ll find her sweet spot one day and I think its somewhere between Alex chung and Cassie a kind of trashy, glam girl next door.

Nothing is guaranteed on Bad Boy or any label so Dawn is really stupid if she thinks Diddy is going to release 3 solo albums for her. If I was Dawn I would shut my mouth until I have a definite time of when my albums are coming out because all this is, is just speculation. Danity Kane signed a 5 album contract with Diddy/Bad Boy and look what happened to them.

    [Reply]

    Brandice Reply:

@humbleurself, I must have missed the bit where she talked about the number of albums or talked about Bad Boy AT ALL. She did mention “venturing off” so could very well be an independent album? and if you haven’t heard independent is the way to go now.

About the interview: she has been a bit more engaged recently, especially when it comes to talking about her ideas. She probably just captured my interest again but I’m hoping the fall thing is a joke. not nearly enough interest in her yet.

    [Reply]

    humbleurself Reply:

Brandice, Can you read? It says “Due on Bad Boy” Independent don’t necessarily means a label , it also means from her picking her own songs, writers, and producers.

And if you didn’t notice Dawn is signed to Bad Boy Entertainment/ Interscope.

I like Dawn, always have, I can appreciate what shes trying to bring to music and beauty, I feel its real and not pretentious the way other ppl come across. I wish her all the best and I hope she doesnt get caught up in the politics of the music business and her work gets shelved.

I know she may not care what people say about her looks, but I hope she finds a style that works for her. You can really tell that the budget has stopped for Dirty Money. She was looking really good for a minute and as the train slowed down, she started looking really amateur again and it’s been six years. Wait, I thought she said the Dirty Money style was really her and not what we saw it Danity Kane.

Big fan of hers but this 3 album shit is #late n #tired… She should focus on marketing 1 album at a time and that’s her debut just make the album have 3 parts like
    4 song relating to goldenheart
    Interlude
    4songs relating to black heart
    Interlude
    4 songs relating to redemptionheart

    And call it a day.

I don’t see it for her. First, off she is FUGLY as hell. Second, she fugly. Third, her singing is just o.k. It’s not like she’s Beyonce or nuthin. Ho sit.

No, I’m not confusing confidence with cocky. She was confident that last season on making the band. When she had the long black hair, her make up was looking nice, and so was her wardrobe, like when she was not considered the “ugly” one in the group anymore and people were beginning to notice her more.
Diddy has a way of over hyping everything he does and he probably had her thinking that DM was going to take over the world. She was the “known one” and “the prettier one” out of the girls now. IMO, she grew a better than thou attitude.

Dawn is lying and stay lying. I know Aubrey and Aubrey have told me many times about Dawn being shady as hell. She signed a solo contract after Danity Kane first album and was so eager to tell the media Aubrey and D.Woods wanted out of Danity Kane so she can look innocent and move on to her solo records. Bad Boy Entertainment was going to release her first single called Phase ft Lil Wayne, LIL WAYNE a big time artist do not randomly appear on songs that are made for demos but fans were sending mails to Bad Boy studios asking for Danity Kane back and they put the project on hold.

you are a sick fan. im pretty sure a personal friend of an artist would not be on a blog telling people’s business. im sure she did sign a solo contract since danity kane only had a five year contract did aubrey tell you that? and dawn’s a writer duh and lil wayne are from the same home town.
