Lady Gaga Rules Albums Chart with 1.1 Million in First Week

Lady Gaga

The official numbers are in. Lady Gaga’s Born This Way reigns atop the albums chart with over a million copies sold in its first week, becoming the biggest debut since 2005.

The pop powerhouse’s third album enters at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 1,108,000 units, according to Billboard. It also marks Gaga’s first No. 1 album. Her debut The Fame peaked at No. 2 and its follow-up The Fame Monster reached No. 5.

Born This Way is the 17th album to sell over a million in a week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. It outperformed Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III (1,005,000) and Taylor Swift’s Speak Now (1,047,000), boasting the largest sales week of any album since 50 Cent’s The Massacre moved 1,141,000 copies in March 2005.

Gaga is the fifth woman to sell a million copies in one week following Britney Spears’ Oops! I Did It Again (1,319,000), The Bodyguard soundtrack featuring Whitney Houston (1,061,000), Norah Jonas’ Feels Like Home (1,022,000), and Swift.

Born This Way benefited from $0.99 pricing on Amazon.com, which accounted for an estimated 440,000 copies. The promotion was not organized by Gaga’s label, Interscope Records, and cost the online retailer a reported $3.2 million over two days, according to Billboard’s estimate.

@Yeah, I agree. I know our country gets dumber by the day, but let’s do something called MATH.

According to this article, Gaga sold 1.1 million copies. If 440,000 of those were sold digitally for .99 cents, then that means 660,000 albums were sold physically. Let’s say that 10 songs equals one album (I chose 10 because the price would total to $9.99 which is generally the cost of an album at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and most online retailers like iTunes). So digital album sales would be the equivalent to 44,000 physical album sales (440,000 digital albums/10 songs = 44,000 albums). 660,000 + 44,000 = 704,000 physical albums. Still impressive, but not enough to make history. This is how numbers lie and can be manipulated. She doesn’t deserve the accolade because she didn’t earn it the way those who came before her did. If any of those other artists mentioned above had their album availble for .99 cents, don’t you think their totals would have been in the 2 million (or somewhere close)?

@listen, Considering Rihanna’s Rated R album was solf for 99c on Amazon for an entire week and still only sold 200k the first week, your argument is officially invalid. Not to mention Britney Spear’s Blackout album was also sold at that price. Hell even Taylor Swift’s album was solf for $3 for a whole week on Amazon. Yet people fail to mention those people, I sense a little bit of hateration in the air. Fall back. Give respect where respect is due.

@SLAYSLAYSLAY, how would Rihanna’s sales make my argument “invalid”? all of those artists mentioned who have dramatically reduced their sales in attempt to “break records” shouldn’t be compared with artists who were able to make history without such gimmicks. what’s so hard to understand about that? it’s no different than an athlete who takes performance enhancing drugs. they are cheaters. and like them, these artists don’t need to be mentioned in the history books because those sales were achieved through price manipulation. now if EVERYONE was able to sell their album for that price, i wouldn’t have a problem. consistency is key when we are talking about setting records. if not, then what does it even matter?

You are right. Consistency is key. That’s why the only artist relevant right now is Beyonce. She is the only one that can do what she does. She is on of the most marketable people in the world. She’s so smart and talented. She had a slow up-coming which doesn’t happen much often anymore. Beyonce is consistent therefore she is realistically marketable.

It’s a harsh but true reality that some people just can’t except. If you don’t like Gaga, don’t applaud her. If you do, join the million that bought her album.

Accept it or not, people like Gaga. Not all, but a lot! There is a meat-wearing, motorcycle-metamorphosizing, over-the-top make-up wearing market that she is catering too! Don’t be mad cause they hungry.

Just try to figure out how you can cater to a market with your skills and you’ll see where she’s coming from.

    SLAYSLAYSLAY Reply:

@listen, To begin with, Amazon reduced all of those artists price, not the artists themselves. So technically speaking, everyone is albe to sell their album for that price. But not everyone is big enough for Amazon to risk millions on. And besides, an album from the ’90s is ALWAYS gonna sell more than the music of today. When it comes to the music of today, people will only buy music from people they truly like.

Even without the Amazon deal, Born This Way still would’ve sold 668K in the first week, which is more than most artists and is a number most artists only dream of selling, especially in 2011, so even if she sold the 668K or 1.108 million, she’s still gonna have the highest selling album of 2011. US sales for Born This WaY are gonna be around 4 million and WW sales are gonna be around 11.5 million because her album has several songs, that if releases will dominate the charts, especially in Europe and South America. Oh and to the haters, Gaga made $90 million last year and voted by Forbes as the most powerful celebrity in the world and her tour was the 13th highest grossing tour of all time which nearly $235 million in over 200 shows on 5 continents, who really runs the world? keep doing your thing gaga.

    [Reply]

    listen Reply:

@Joyams, you clearly missed the point. it’s not about whether her numbers are “impressive” or not. she’s LADY GAGA, the supposedly biggest pop star in the world right now. they are SUPPOSED to be impressive. my problem is the fact that she is now being considered the second or third highest selling female in HISTORY. that’s the issue. when you’re album costs the price of a single, there’s no way you can compare that to artists who didn’t have that price point. very simple. i really believe is Nicki sold her album for .99 cents, she definitely would have had much higher numbers as well. it’s not fair. very biased. and she doesn’t deserve that glory because her numbers are based on a lie.

    [Reply]

    Lolk Reply:

@listen,Co-Sign so true,no one is hating on Gaga, but facts are facts,50 cent and wayne made millions, they sold there stuff for 14,99-15,00 and that is what i bought both albums for back in the day,and you had to go to the store and buy the hard copy,i have nothing against Gaga though gratz to her, people just need to understand that she didn,t get them numbers from full price, that,s why must of her fans are so not tentative,on this issue because they know that the facts are there, alot of artist would have put up big numbers if they did what Gaga did,and i hope they don’t and sell there stuff cheap because they want to put up a record.

    [Reply]

    **sigh** Reply:

    @Lolk,
So ya’ll mad at her marketing?

I hate to sound mean, but if you are not a Gaga fan, why would you care?

I like gaga, not enough to purchase her album, but enough to know that there are millions who do like her that much. Wasn’t she in Forbes before this? So she was making money before the 99 cents ordeal.

You all are making it seem like people bought it JUST BECAUSE they had 99 cents. Did you spend your 99 cents on it? Then that idea doesn’t make sense. Amazon and Gaga offered a deal that her fans couldn’t refuse. It’s nothing to be mad about.

Cheap or expensive, the only people who are happy are her fans (which are millions whether you like it or not) and the people who aren’t don’t really matter to her because she’s not catering to you.

    [Reply]

    .. Reply:

@**sigh**, if you like just 1 song off of the album instead of buying that 1 song on itunes you can buy the whole album for that price. So obviously non fans had bought it too.

    **sigh** Reply:

    @.., LOL

I’ll keep it short. If you buy music from Gaga, you are DEFINITELY a fan. Non-fans don’t buy songs from artists they don’t fan for…ya dig?

I was going to say this…bu I’m sure you get my point. She offered up her product at a reasonable price and it made her fans day. If you’re mad, go eat a cookie and drink some warm milk to make you feel better and move on with your life.

I was going to say this, but it’s too long. But if you have nothing to do….

So you’ve obviously never liked an artist where you didn’t like all the songs. Even MJ had songs that people didn’t like.

If Gaga is my thang, I was probably going to buy it ANYWAY! The basis of it being a dollar was just icing on a cake.

Think about it. If you were ALREADY going to buy a cake for your birthday, intending on spending at least $14-$20 and you found out it was only 99 cents? You mean to tell me you wouldn’t be happy? You’d probably go and tell your friends too, wouldn’t you?

It doesn’t matter what you think. Even if they only wanted one song, they still liked Gaga. And name one time any of her fans complained about any of her recent albums having only ONE good jam on it.

Just let it go. neither one of us are making money on this topic while she rides off into the sunset with the MILLION. Just agree to disagree.

    Lolk Reply:

@**sigh**,so who was talking about money listen, she sold her product cheep because she wanted to put up a record, that,s the would point of the matter,no one said she didn’t have money, she spend 7 mill on the making of the judas video, and you and everyone that thinks the same way, feels she Wayne and 50 cent is on the same level when it come to selling records, simple as that, no hate here, and stop being a stanley and trying to make something out of nothing, alot of people bought it because it was 99c,but her fans would still buy it no matter the price because she have a strong fan base, but she sure as hell wouldn’t make a milli+ in the first week, and do you only comment on articles that concerns your fav artist no,this is a blog,so don’t be asking me why do i care.

OUR opinion doesn’t change the fact that she STILL sold a million in one week. It’s in the records. Our pointless blog argument won’t change that. If you don’t like the way she roll don’t look at her vehicle, ya dig?

I wish Rap-Up would have stated more facts on this article, because it resulted in a bunch of people over looking the feat that Lady GaGa has accomplished. Amazon chose to sell her album “digitally” for $0.99. They bough the album for full retail price and took on the $7-8 loss in order to steal iTunes buyers into using their service. They even included a 20GB upgrade to the cloud service.
In the end the 3 million lost they took is expected to be recoup by people now shopping on Amazon for their music and using their cloud service, which iTunes has yet to develop. Amazon still has to pay Interscope full price for every album sold. GaGa’s marketing team understands the current state of the industry. People are less inclined to purchase music these days, so if you get people to legally purchase music no matter the price it’s a win for the industry. Trust other artist will soon follow this moto.
Now that everyone is able to hear the music for $0.99 they will pass it along to friends and so many people will come familiar with the music that they will buy the physical album in stores for full price, and or attend a live concert to see the artist.
Amazon sold Taylor Swift album for $3.99 digitally on release day as well, but no one says she cheated her million sales in a week. The Best Buy free CD with the purchase of a mobile phone WERE NOT included in the Billboard charts.
So if she sold 700k minus the Amazon deal than that well as may be equivalent to Nsync doing 2million+ back when music piracy was not as easy as it is today.

Regardless, if there was no demand to hear the album then people wouldn’t buy it even for the low price of $0.99. I have no interest in hearing a T-Pain album. So if it was sold for $0.01 I still wouldn’t buy it.

    [Reply]

    @Teamdrickinyc,

It is totally cheating. But what can you do? Go tell the teacher?

In the end, you can’t be mad at Gaga and her team> I’m sure if you were on the receiving end of this deal, you wouldn’t be so upset now would ya? LOL Smile.

real recognizes real and if she’s a fake, it’ll come out. Until then, only support the music you love!

@**sigh**, She still wouldn’t sell 1 million without Amazon boosting her up. THAT’S THE FACT. She couldn’t do it alone, end of story. Other artist don’t get help, they work hard and they get it DONE. NSYNC, BACKSTREET BOYS, LIL WAYNE, TAYLOR SWIFT THEY DIDN’T NEED TO PUT THEIR ALBUM ON SALE FOR A DOLLAR TO HELP THEM REACH A MILLION.

    @Teamdrickinyc,

…and you for real still mad about it. Like EVERYBODY in the music industry is innocent. Please take the rose colored glasses off and see the tainted forest for the trees. The transactions are done. Move on. It really shouldn’t bother you if you don’t like her or her music. MBiz is a shady business anyway.

@Dallas Champ, taylor plus wayne sold more than 1 million in their first week but they didn’t cheat like gaga

@.., I wish people like you would learn to read before posting ignorant bullshit. Amazon and Lady Gaga are two different entities. AMAZON was aware of Lady Gaga’s hype for her album so they priced it much lower than they purchased it for to bring in a bigger audience for the launch of their cloud file system. This is what you call an INVESTMENT. Amazon is attempting to compete with iTunes. Haters are gonna hate.

@.., taylor and wayne get more respect for that accomplishment. 99cents downloads does taint her overall sales. I have a feeling next week sales will drop dramatically.

@joejpaige, Forgive me! This is the first time a major artist like Lady Gaga and her Entire album is available for 99cents. The cost of single song!

Actually 50, taylor, wayne, and britney have all done this on their own. Gaga didn’t ask for this and thats why Amazon is in the red 3.2 million. That’s the fact! Way to go GAGA and they did this on the first day of release so lets be honest, at least 300,000 of those cds would have been bought at full price but people got an early Christmas present! Get over yourselves and be realistic!…I’m not even a GAGA fan, she occasionally has good songs!

Someone out there thought: “Do I buy this candy bar or lady gaga’s album”. Well since candy bars are now over a dollar, its no wonder they chose Gaga.
I just dont get the hype around her. I mean Susan Boyle and Adele have great voices and Beyonce makes really catchy songs, so I get that.

Im not a hater, cus I liked The Fame, but now all she makes is empowerment songs, which all have the same annoying stadium song #crap, I woulda bought the candybar
