On the second anniversary of his mixtape The Warm Up, J. Cole unleashes “Work Out,” the long-awaited first single from his debut, due later this summer. The Roc Nation rapper, who is currently opening for Rihanna on her “LOUD” tour, wonders if a fleeting relationship will last as he raps over a sample of Kanye West’s “New Workout Plan” and sings lyrics from Paula Abdul’s 1988 hit “Straight Up.” After generating heat with his mixtapes, will the summertime record help Cole cross over? Work up a sweat below.
@Yaser Lad, Haters needa stop hatin, he sed the album is a mix of deep songs like song for the ville etc, agressive songs like we on, and up beat party songs like this one.. the majority of the album will be deep and agressive songs but for mainstream pple who hear cole on the radio for the first time, work out is gna grab their attention alot more.. pple need to chill and enjoy work out for wat it is, gaurantee after 4 listens it will be stuck in ur hed all day.. so enjoy it and wait for the album.. Still a Cole World!!
SMDH…. Cole… what were you thinking releasing this 1st? And what was Jay thinking for approving this?
“Higher” shouldve been released to radio… There had to be at least 30 or 40 songs better than this…. ughh, and I’m a HUGE J. Cole fan, but this is not the one.
@Dante, i completely agree… cole represents new real hip hop i dunno why he’d do this song
it feels like game’s r.e.d, they both have so much more potential than their singles
I agree wholeheartedly. I am a fan, not a stan and i refuse to accept any ol bullshit. folks was crowning him the next NAS and he comes with this lukewarm one night stand bull? I KNOW he can come harder than this-this is some local rapper buzz single shit. Chris Brown should be dropping ‘rap’ like this, not J. Cole. If he thinks this shit will fly for real, then he will see its a ‘col(d)e world indeed. NEXTTTTTTTT!!!!
Nice! Something for the radio!
If people don’t understand he has to play his cards right. This song is suppose to be summer radio friendly but he still kept it hiphop so stop bitching
“you can play the game or watch the game play you, or be the broke mf talking about i stayed true”
Jay-z, Pac, Nas, Outkast,Kanye, etc (all the great artist) play the game. Make those radio friendly songs and fill up the albums with the good quality stuff. J Cole is a new artist, he isn’t at the point like a Kanye where he can makes what he wants to make and it will sell. This song is to build up his buzz
I listened to this a second time w/ headphones & a 3rd time in my ride… The bass was perfect. I think it grew on me. I like it. Perfect for my new summer time mix. I can’t live with not jammin a Cole joint.

@StillAColeWorld, will u clam up with all that “hating” BS!!!!! I was expecting more…ALOT MORE and we get this??? Please….take ur meds, sit down and shut da hell up!
I’m not a huge fan of his, although I do check up on him from time to time. For some reason he gives me great lyrics but the beats that are given to him are just blah. He needs to capitalize on the hype QUICK or it could become too late.
Im really disappointed with this. I like his lyricism but the beat and the sample is WACK!!! What made his think that sampling kanye’s workout plan would be hot???
You guys are idiots. This is a single for his album, it NEEDS to be light-hearted and radio friendly so it can get radio play. Why do you think Who Dat didn’t get much play? It went 100x more hard then Work out but that was the problem it was too hard for the radio. Have you heard Lost Ones that got leaked a week ago? Awesome track that will be on his album, and a lot of his songs are going to be that deep which isn’t what the mainstream wants right now.
At first I wasn’t feeling Workout either, but after a couple more listens I am starting to love it and already see myself dancing to it. When this song gets blown up on the radio it will be a huge hit.
