Maxwell took his fans to church during his “VH1 Storytellers” performance of “Fistful of Tears,” getting emotional while reflecting on his rise to success. VH1 offers a sneak peek at the intimate show, which airs Friday at 11 p.m. EST/PST.

“‘Fistful of Tears’ was definitely inspired by the war,” Maxwell told the audience. “I hate the fact that we’re fighting. I can’t wait for the troops to come back. The fact that we’re fighting a religious war is crazy to me. I mean everyone should believe in whatever they want to believe in, just don’t mess with me.”
