New Music: Mary J. Blige – ‘The Living Proof’

The Living Proof

Mary J. Blige weathers the storm on “The Living Proof,” the theme song from the upcoming film The Help. The survivors’ anthem, produced by The Underdogs, is an understated piano-driven number written about Aibileen (Viola Davis), the main character who plays a maid living in Mississippi during the 1960s. The soundtrack will be available July 26 at Starbucks.

“To speak to so many women with this song, it means a lot to me,” explained the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, whose album My Life II: The Journey Continues is due this September.

@Killenem, you know what you one of those people who believe we should kill our idols and heros, well you know what if Mary J. Blige is so horrible go ahead and get rid of all the albums of hers you have, the pictures taken at her concerts, and forget the music videos you have seen of hers a million times and just forget about the woman who has paved the way for so many other R&B artists, you should be ashamed of yourself.

    what the fuck??!
i was quite shocked when @Killenem said it was horrible. I’m no fan in Mary J Blige, but really, she has one of the best voice.
@Killenem Rihanna and Keri Hilson do this kind of song?? well, u can ask britney or taylor swift to do this one then.
by the way, U’RE JUST FUCKING DEAF!

I usually buy everything mary writes or sings! But this one is just awful…it must be around the time of no more drama 2001/02 where she started to sound polished and by times over tuned. Her sound technicians need to understand that the right editing does not automatically mean taking her edge away by tuning her voice to where she needs to go.
she sounds throaty and “painful” …because it takes more than digital editing to make something sound right!
i always loved the fact that she was the anti whitney/mariah…she was rough, forceful and real…but now!?
    sorry but i don’t like it…

Thats my girl MJB. #R&B ICON. She’s not going anywhere. 20 years strong in this fickle industry. Go listen to her new songs on Youtube “Miss me with that” & “Hero”. Mary still has “the voice” & all of the responses have been positive, her fans love it. “My Life 2 in stores Oct.

Nobody but Mary could relay the message that is being told in this song. You can hear the story behind the music in her voice. If you know MJB and her music you know this could not be sung better by anyone else. She is truly an inspiration and I can’t wait to see the film.

what’s been up with mary’s music lately? it’s been terrible and there is an obvious disconnect between the music and audience.

    [Reply]

    Jane Doe Reply:

@Corey, How do you figure that? The last time I checked Mary was still doing the damn thing. She has 2 new songs on youtube that the ppl love. Where’s the disconnect? She just rocked the Essence Music Festival, the ppl loved it. Again where is the disconnect? She won the “Hottest Black Music Superstar on Facebook”. So Corey, where is the disconnect with Mary, her music & her fans. I need to know. # R&B ICON. Don’t ever forget it.

    Miss Mary,
You are the truth! look at you, you are the truth. You have come through the mess of people and their storm. You seem better than ever. Your voice tells me so! I knew I would love the movie after the book…and now you too!!!! I will GO AS FAR AS TO SAY, this will be YOUR SONG! you will take this one into the heavens. THANK YOU!

I saw the movie last night and the song at the end touched me even more than the movie. Maybe it is truthful to say that the song, Living Proof, put just the right emotional and heartwrenching end that was needed to the film. Loved the movie, and loved the song even more. Mary you still got it, whoever thinks otherwise just doesn’t know real talent.
