Beyoncé Sought Critical Acclaim with ‘4’

Beyoncé

Beyoncé topped the worldwide charts with her latest album 4, but she didn’t have No. 1 in mind when she recorded it. The pop powerhouse reveals that she was aiming to appease her critics with her latest effort.

While most artists may denounce their critics or not read reviews at all, the singer paid close attention to what reviewers were saying. “I really wanted to make a great body of work and a great classic album, and I focused more on the music from beginning to end,” she told “Access Hollywood.”

“I really wanted to get the critical acclaim. I feel like the longer I do this—I’ve been doing it for 15 years now—No. 1s are amazing, but to see some of the comments that the Rolling Stones and The New York Times and all of these credible, amazing, really critical magazines and papers [are saying] has really made me my proudest.”

The album has yet to produce any massive hits like in the past, but that was never her goal. “Just getting the respect from my peers and reading the really tough, tough critics, them acknowledging my growth and my bravery ’cause that was really what I wanted to do is go against the grain and try to put chords and bridges and lyrics and music back on the radio.”

While she has won Grammys for all three of her previous solo albums, she only considers her debut Dangerously in Love to be a classic. “I think my first album was a classic album. The other two were great, but I didn’t focus on that,” she candidly stated. “I focused more on singles and this time I said, ‘Let me take it back to when people just listened from beginning to end.’”

I love her first album but don’t care about her last one. Sorry, but for me it was really just blaaahhh. She is the greatest artist we have, but this album was a fail. Nevertheless this album was hundred times better than everything Gagag, Rihanna or J.Lo did in the last 2 years…..but I totally disagree. That album is nothing to be proud of.

at least shes honest. I was never a fan of Bday or Sasha because she wasnt really talking about anything. Sure its cool to have number 1 singles but that doesn’t make someone music timeless. A lot of these kids think that having the top records and singles makes someone timeless but a lot of artists back in the day had their greatest records not even come out as singles. Still not a huge Beyonce fan but it’s cool shes letting the robotic persona down and focusing on making quality music.

  18. FuckCritics

How is she now saying Dangerously in Love was a classic? She focused on singles just as much then as she did with BDay & IamSF. Plus, just a couple of years ago she talked about how IamSF was intended to be a classic, timeless project (in addition w/ the black & white vids & photography used on it). She also talked about making a classic staple with the BDay Vid Anthology. However, the album 4 is good… but she should have thought her singles out better. Why would you care what the critics thinks… fuck critics it’s all about the FANS Bey.

    [Reply]

  19. CJ

Why would critics be so important to an artist? Especially an artist like Beyonce. She should focus on what’s really important – the FANS. In my opinion, 4 is good and is much better that I Am Sasha Fierce, though Run the World shouldn’t have been the 1st single… point blank. I do smell a lil bull tho since its singles aren’t tearing up the charts.

    [Reply]

@Real Issh, Yeah I did watch the “Year of 4″ doc… I guess I was just looking to see a HUGE impact and statement with Bey re-entering the industry after her longest career hiatus (and Run the World was not the move) & yes she does thank her fans over and over but as far as I’m concerned the critics can kick rocks

i just feel as long as the artist is happy with their album, and truly love it then what everybody else says doesn’t really matter. but i do think that since beyonce was trying to do something different than mainstream then she shouldn’t of had run the world (girls) on the album! and lyrically she should of branched out more, instead of doing nothing but songs about love she should of talked about world issues like michael jackson did with his music. either way i do like beyonce, 4 was not that great but it was decent. i just have to say beyonce just keep doing you!!!!!!!!!!

I like this. She seems like she’s growing. No matter how imperfect one is, various attempts to grow overshadow any flaw. I’m glad she’s focusing more on the actual music. I didn’t like the gimmicks of I am… even though they worked. Wasn’t that her best selling album?

Gaga said Born This Way is a classic, Alicia said As I Am is a classic and Beyonce is saying 4 and Dangerously in Love are both classics, but we’ll see when Rolling Stones does it next list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time if they’re on there, which I highly doubt. The only albums from this generation I can think of that could possibly make it are : Songs in A Minor, The Diary of Alicia Keys, The ArchAndroid, FutureSex/LoveSounds, Confessions, 21, Tha Carter III, The Blueprint, The Black Album and The Marshall Mathers LP. All of these albums have had a significant cultural and musical impact. Dangerously in Love, The Fame Monster and Fearless by Taylor Swift could also possibly make it, but I am not too sure. Kelis Was Here and Flesh Tone by Kelis are easily 2 of the best albums of the 2000s decade but because they both flopped, they’ll never make it, which is sad. It’s also sad we live in a industry when quantity determines quality.

    [Reply]

    LO Reply:

@Heavy Metal Lover, Who cares about rolling stone that’s there opinion. They nominated Gaga as Queen of Pop because of what she did through 2009-2011 that’s dumb, and they had Taylor Swift, and Adele as runner ups man bye. And for the best singers list Mary J. Blige was on there she doesn’t have any good vocals.

    [Reply]

    Heavy Metal Lover Reply:

@LO, “Who cares about rolling stone?” Ummm, every recording artist in the music industry. Rolling Stone and Billboard are the two most respected music publications in the music industry so why wouldn’t a good album or song review or being placed on their greatest artists/singers/albums and songs lists be important and what does Lady Gaga being named by them as The Queen of Pop have to do with her albums being classics or not? And why isn’t Lady Gaga the new Queen of Pop? Taylor, Adele and Beyonce are not Pop. Taylor is Country, Adele is Soul and Beyonce is R&B. Katy, Britney and Rihanna are all not talented. Gaga can actually sing, she writes and produces great songs, she’s a great performer, so why isn’t she the new Queen of Pop? And MJB was #100 on that list as well and they criticized her vocals during their review of her as well.

I still believe “B’Day” was her best work. From a critical standpoint I can see where people would probably rank it as her worst, but I just appreciated how light it was on thematic content and how fun it sounded. It came out right as I started my freshman year at college, so the timing was perfect for me. But regarding “4,” I definitely appreciate how she took a risk and wasn’t too concerned with the commerical performance of the album, because it’s definitely the riskiest album she has done yet and I love it. There are so many odd sounds on this album that I can never picture getting played on the radio, which makes it that much more interesting.
