Robin Thicke unleashes the beast on “I’m an Animal,” a soulful cut reportedly from his latest recording sessions. “Put a gate around my heart, don’t you let me out the yard, I’m an animal baby,” sings the unruly crooner, who is working on his fifth album, due in late 2011/early 2012. some decent music thank god i haven’t heard a lot of real r&b this year so hearing this is refreshing. Glad to see that MR Thicke hasn’t become another sell out.

Meh. I’m personally tired of the Stax-ish influence, only because it’s about the only alternative there seems to be for artists that don’t want to record what passes for mainstream “r&b” these days. Mayer Hawthorne, Eli Reed, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Raphael Saadiq (among many others) have all started to blend together for me, into one big bad karaoke extravaganza.

The only artist with this aesthetic that I like is Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings.
