« Janet Jackson Becomes Legendary in Blackglama CampaignSneak Peek: Rihanna – ‘Cheers (Drink to That)’ »Poll: Can Lil Wayne Sell a Milli with ‘Tha Carter IV’?![]() All eyes are on Lil Wayne as he prepares to release his ninth solo album Tha Carter IV on Monday. Anticipation for the fourth installment in Tha Carter series began several years ago and since then, the hip-hop heavyweight has built up his Young Money empire with superstars including Drake and Nicki Minaj, served eight months behind bars, and still managed to sell out arenas across the country. Despite his continued success, industry pundits question whether Weezy will be able to repeat the blockbuster sales of Tha Carter III, which sold over one million copies in its first week in June 2008. So far, C4 has spawned four hit singles including “6 Foot 7 Foot,” “John,” “How to Love,” and “She Will,” but has yet to produce massive radio records like “Lollipop” or “A Milli.” Will Wayne be able to dethrone Jay-Z and Kanye West, who currently have the biggest opening for a hip-hop album this year with Watch the Throne (436,000)? And can he top reigning pop queen Lady Gaga, who holds the biggest debut of 2011 with 1.1 million units sold of Born This Way? How much do you think Tha Carter IV will sell in its first week? Weigh in by taking our poll below.

NO. we all know Cash Money was the main factor in him selling 1 million the first time. especially since the record was leaked weeks prior. if Baby, which probably will, buys at least 400,000 copies, he’ll do a million.

All yall hateing. He will do a milli no dobut cause all his singles hit a driffrent class of fans. How to love- Female vote, 6 foot 7 foot- Hip hop vote, John- Pure rap vote. And I forgot nightmare of the bottom which everyone loves. He said in 2008 on the carter documentry “On my albums you are gooing to find Rap the best rap, singing the best songs not the best singing,” and he is providing that for all is fans like he said, and me for one I think it is better than the C3 cause it has a more varity of music.

Plus we didn’t have all these other new talents out. I’m not a huge Nicki fan, but I predict her out selling & out wining all of YM b-cuz of her pop appeal. Drake will do well 2.

I’d say between 400,000 & 600,000. I don’t think he will even score the milli bar after 2 weeks. Or roughly (but that would still be sweet, right ?). Here’s why.
Weezy is super hot, he is Hip-hop’s hottest star today (He has been such for over 3 or 4 years now, in my opinion), and he is constantly mentioned in “Best Rappers Alive” lists. Furthermore, his aura has been constantly been getting bigger and bigger. He’s building up a legacy like Superman would be building up a house.
But is this situation (year, state of the game, etc.) as profitable for him today as it was 3 years ago ? No.
In 2011, the main thing that has changed is competition. It is of course easier to shine when all of the lights are on you. The lights definitely weren’t all on Weezy, but a lot were. More than this year, at least. At this time, he was on a kind of apogee of his future “leader of the game” status. He was experimented, but still coming up.
Today, 3 years after Tha Carter III, this is over. Wayne is a huge name in Hip-Hop, and everybody waits for his album. Which means more people will be disappointed, whether his album is trash or the best of all time.
Meanwhile, hungry up-and-comers (confirmed and rising stars alike) like Drake, J.Cole, Meek Mill, Wale, Wiz Khalifa, Tyler the Creator, etc., are making an impact, day after day, month after month. I can honestly say that the game has never been in a better shape, both commercially and culturally. Rarely in its short -but intense- history has it ever had such a reservoir of talents and variety.
Sure values like The Game, Kanye West/Jay-Z, Eminem(/Royce da 5’9″) have also released a project this year. Drake & J.Cole will release theirs during the autumn. Lil Wayne will not be alone, and due to the extensive amount of works released this year, there will be more comparisons, therefore more detractors, therefore more choices, etcetera etcetera (this is like a vicious circle).
Wayne’s singles have not hyped up the album as they should’ve had, perhaps, and no single on this album will ever be as successful as was Lollipop. Not now, not ever, in my opinion. But he doesn’t need that, does he ? He is an household name not only on Rap music, but in the American music landscape altogether. He is up there as one of the hottest artists in America, along with people like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, etc. Let’s be honest. He is a symbol, even an icon, today, because he does his own thing and godsons others. He’s superactive, it might be the thing that will keep hip up there, but it may also be the thing that will drive him down.
Let’s not forget that records do not sell as much as before, thanks to illegal downloading, pricey physical albums and the fact that people can listen to the whole album for free on the internet. So a million will be reached by an artist who manages to create both a monstrous hype and a general interest around the music rather than in the music itself. Lady Gaga is the example that comes to mind, since the sold 1 million on the 1st week. She is constantly touring, literally around the world, never rests, and captivates by aspects others than her music. Meanwhile, her diet consists in drinking alcohol and other substances. She’s probably the most famous person in the world today, but she will pay it with her life if she carries on that road. Be sure about that. Weezy won’t do it.
This was my take on this. Peace. From France. And sorry if there are some writing mistakes, I did it kind of quickly.

I think a lot of people underestimate Weezy, sure I don’t believe he’ll sell a milli, but don’t forget he “was” the artist that “did” sell a milli with C3. I know times have changed with illegal downloads, etc. But people seem to forget his mixtape which wasn’t even original material did absolutely “huge” numbers. Also I think the Tech feature & other high profile features will bring in a few more sales.
But WTT the most hyped album of the year only did in the 400,000s,and albums aren’t selling nearly as well as they were & on a minor note I noticed on an old post the Nicki Stans were dissapointed with no feature.
So weighing up both sides….I reckon mid 400,000s might break 500,000 if he gets some mega publicity stunts up and running. But I’m left with the feeling I might be surprised but I stand by my prediction. Anyone agree?

niggas know they don’t buy CDs anymore so his album will do just as well as all of the other good black celebrities that our people don’t even support, it’ll be #1 on billboard for about 1 or 2 week, then Adele’s album or Eminem’s will creep back up because white people actually support their artist in the stores unlike us. Hopefully that won’t be the case but thats the most likely outcome :/

@GOD, I’m not racist I’m just saying that a lot of “die hard wayne supporters” will just download his CD so that they can be the first one with it and when the CD hits stores they don’t support it by actually buying the song. Record labels don’t look at the number of free copies that people downloaded from websites they look at actual number of record sells, the number of weeks the album is on the billboards, etc so I’m not trying to say no black people like Eminem but rather that its ridiculous that all these other people like Katy Perry, Eminem, Taylor Swift, and Adele are breaking all these records and we don’t have too many of our well deserved artist up there with them because people would rather download it for free than to buy the album
