Lil Wayne's 'Tha Carter IV' Set for Blockbuster Opening Week

Lil Wayne

Three years after releasing his landmark album Tha Carter III, Lil Wayne is still a force to be reckoned with. The sequel to Weezy’s 2008 album arrived in stores and online Monday and according to preliminary reports, it’s shaping up to be another blockbuster.

Based on one-day sales estimates, Tha Carter IV is easily on track to debut at No. 1 and sell a whopping 850,000-900,000 copies in its first week, reports HITS Daily Double. That’s not far behind the sales of its predecessor, which opened with a little more than 1 million copies in June 2008.

Those figures will give the Young Money rapper the second-highest sales week of the year, outperforming Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne, which moved 613,000 units in its first two weeks combined.

But can Weezy top Lady Gaga, who currently holds the largest debut of the year with 1.1 million copies of Born This Way?

C4 has received unfavorable reviews from critics, but that doesn’t seem to be stunting sales. Based on results of our online poll, 25 percent of readers think the album will top the 1 million mark.
