Rap-Up.com || Adele, Rihanna, & Lil Wayne Lead American Music Awards Nominations

Adele’s domination over music continues. The British powerhouse leads the nominations for the 2011 American Music Awards, it was announced today.

The “Rolling in the Deep” songstress scored four nods including Artist of the Year at the 39th annual show. Rihanna, Lil Wayne, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and The Band Perry follow with three nominations each.

Meanwhile, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Bruno Mars, Jason Aldean, LMFAO, and Pitbull picked up two nominations.

In addition to Adele, Lil Wayne, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift will vie for the coveted Artist of the Year award.

Nicki Minaj and Pitbull were on hand to announce the nominees at a press conference on Tuesday. Katy Perry and Pitbull will perform, with additional acts and presenters to be revealed in the coming weeks.

The 2011 AMAs will air live from the NOKIA Theatre in downtown L.A. on Sunday, November 20, at 8 p.m. on ABC. See a full list of nominees below.

@Sean, B/c she’s black and has crossover appeal and urban is still in some of her stuff (Whats My Name, Man Down). Aside from that, as you can see by there being only 2 and 3 nominees for most categories, they needed to fill space.
There are only a couple big names out there right now or even a couple people in a genre who somewhat stand out.

This is the year of Adele but aside from that?
Rihanna: shoving herself down our throats
Katy Perry: who’s record is well over a year old but pushed the life out of it
Beyonce: who can’t get a hit single right now and is just “around”
Wayne: big first week and now nowhere to be found
The Throne: hype and a single, lets go on tour, done
Kanye’s album: All of The Lights was it
Nicki: has had singles, some bigger than others, only 1 big hit, but thoroughly promoted it and kept herself out there

If these artist can’t care enough to keep their album alive and push it, then you can’t expect people to remember it a year later when the era only lasted 3 months.

Let’s be real, The American Music Awards is all about commercial success, and who sells the most records, and which artists are the most popular. The American Music Awards don’t care about good music, The American Music Awards don’t care about quality of music. The American Music Awards only care about record sales, and TV ratings. Every music fan who is unbiased, and knows real music will admit that Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj are good rappers, but both of them are highly overrated. I give Wayne and Minaj credit for selling records, but Tha Carter 4 and Pink Friday were not as great as everyone thought it would be. Kanye West’s MBDTF album was the best album of 2010, and Kanye West/Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne Album was one of the best albums of 2011. But there is no doubt in my mind, that The Grammy Awards nominations and winners in 2012 will be far different from the American Music Awards nominations, and winners. If the Grammy Awards follow the same path as the American Music Awards, I will lose all respect for the Grammy Awards, but more importantly, it will only prove that these awards shows don’t know a damn good thing about good music.
