Drake Talks André 3000, Sweaters, & Lil Wayne vs. Jay-Z

Drake

With just days to go until Take Care is released, Drake caught up with GQ to break down his latest body of work. The Young Money rapper also spoke about collaborating with André 3000, how Take Care compares to his previous albums, his desire to launch a sweater line, and where he stands on the Lil Wayne vs. Jay-Z controversy.

On his favorite albums in rank: “It’s hard for me to put So Far Gone second because it’s the first time anyone ever really paid attention or heard me. But I’m going to be honest with you, Take Care, then So Far Gone, then Thank Me Later…”
On getting André 3000 for “The Real Her”: “He murdered that shit! He killed it and 40 switched the beat, it’s nasty. I didn’t get to see him record, but speaking with him was great and we even spoke about projects beyond ‘The Real Her.’”
On whose version of “Marvin’s Room” he prefers: “I mean everybody says JoJo’s but you know I don’t really have a favorite. Actually, my version is my favorite and I never say stuff like that. But really though, my version is my favorite because there is such a story behind it.”
On his favorite sweaters: “It’s a toss-up between three sweaters. I’d say one would be obviously the OVO Owl Sweater. I can wear it repetitively and no one calls me out on it. I have a cashmere Hermes sweater that I love. Lastly, any of my Missoni sweaters. I don’t give a fuck what anybody says about my Missoni sweaters! Fuck you, if you don’t like my sweater! It’s funny because people only talk about me and sweaters because I don’t give them anything else to talk about. I live in Canada, so any dirt I do you’ll never see because we don’t have the paparazzi up there! It’s the stupidest thing, man, but I’ll embrace it. Hopefully Missoni hollers at me and we get a sweater line popping!”
On the Lil Wayne vs. Jay-Z controversy: “I’m just riding with Wayne, always. I’ll never sit here and say that Wayne compromised me. I’m just doing what I gotta do. I’m a Cash Money soldier. That’s who I ride for.”
On whether he would have rapped on “H•A•M”: “If I had heard it? No. Because Wayne’s done way more for my career than Jay-Z. Wayne is the reason I’m here. Jay-Z did that for Cole, that’s his artist. Cole’s my brother, he’s an artist I respect so much but I know he’d say the same thing. We’ve got bosses. We’re just falling in line, doing what we got to do.”

    @smh, I agree.

His music is alright, but in some songs I just can’t feel the “rapper” vibe. He is more is the lines of hip hop soul.

As a person, he just comes off as a sponge, soft. He absorbs feelings and emotions of what it’s like to be hard, then when he releases it, it’s mere water. The reflection in the water is hard, but he is not solid.

I think the album is sensational though, the production, melodies and lyrics.

Look what you’ve done is the realest song I’ve heard all year. I think it will take a couple of weeks for it to sink in that take care is a 5/5 classic that has something for every market.

When you want that heat you just listen to Underground kings hyfr, lord knows and headlines.

My only criticism is that there’s no bouncy , feel good songs like show me a good time. The overall tone for the album is quite dark but I’m sure he’ll put that right on his third lp.

It’s got everything for everybody. I’m definitely coping a copy, dude deserves that buy. I wouldn’t feel robbed like when I got that bullshit carter iv which has less substance than Kil Kardasian’s marriage.

The haters are going to hate but this is the leader of the new school just like he claimed in so far gone. He’s still got 10 years to go, enjoy the ride and take care.

  13. TRA

I think it is sad to see both Lil Wayne and Jay-Z beefing like this but let’s keep real,Jay-Z raps circles around Lil Wayne all day long. Lil Wayne is selling a lot of records but Jay-Z gets far more respect in the music industry than Lil Wayne and everyone in the music industry knows that. Jay-Z has made 12 solo albums that all went number one on the billboard charts and Jay-Z has won more awards and makes more money than everyone in Young Money, so Jay-Z has pretty much won this war right from the start. Lil Wayne fell off ever since he copied Kanye West’s 8O8s and Heartbreak album by doing Rebirth album which was downright terrible. Tha Carter 4 got terrible reviews from unbiased music critics left and right. Lil Wayne will have to survive two more decades and four classic albums before I believe he could surpass Jay-Z and that’s the truth.

  18. The Truth

I’m gonna be real with ya’ll with an unbiased opinion…Jay-Z is real. His crew Kanye and Beyonce are real too.

On the other hand, Lil Wayne, Drake, and Nicki Minaj claim that they’re real on every single song but they’re all talk. They’re actions speak otherwise.

Why Wayne is fake: He’s from New Orleans, yet game 1 of the NFL season he tweets “Go Pack Go” once the Packers beat the Saints. How you gon say you represent New Orleans when you switch up football teams juss cause they losing?? That ain’t real.

Why Drake is fake: He sings Marvin’s Room playa hating on some guy who loves some girl. Then, in the song ‘practice’ Drake says to some girl ‘don’t give other guys a chance, they had their chance’ thats contradicting his self! This dudes confused! He calls himself real in every single song yet he can’t prove it. He has a track called ‘underground kings’ like wow..Drake is so mainstream, total opposite of underground. Then he has a line in his new album saying “compare the greats from the past…they prolly wont survive in this era” smh…i wish tupac and biggie heard that.

Why Nicki is fake: She copies Lil Kim, tries to be Lady Gaga.

Cash Money Records is all fakes, no matter how many times they call themselves real. I’m just being real with ya’ll and telling the truth. I say Jay wins in this one.

Like it or not, Jay Z was from that era& he’s still dominating so he is he speaking of? Kanye? Haa NO! Pac & Biggie? HELL NO! I need further clarity.
