Common Addresses Drake in New Freestyle [Video]

Common

Common showed off his skills as an MC, going off the top of the dome once again during his visit to Atlanta’s V-103. The Chicago lyricist freestyled over his 2000 single “The Light” as Ryan Cameron held up words for him to rhyme. He even addressed his beef with Drake. “You can ask why, people want me to keep dissing Canada Dry,” he said, referring to the Canadian MC. But unless Drake responds, Common says he’s done beefing.

Common is ridiculous. Drake did 700k first week. He did just around 50 k. The difference is clear. Drake is the better rapper

@Thisisreallynotcool, u have poor judgement of the ability of a rapper. Sales are good for stans to bicker over but it shouldnt be used to measure an emcee’s lyrical ability. For example Nas, Rakim, or KRS ONE havent sold as much as alot of other rappers but no one will deny their wordplay

popularity =/= quality. mc hammer and vanilla ice sold a lot of albums too, but no one would say they a great rappers because of how much they sold. let’s look at talent. i could never see drake doing want common did in this video. drake can’t even “freestyle” without reading lyrics from off his blackberry.

@Thisisreallynotcool, you cant judge on record sales, thats true…but at the end of the day drake is making common look foolish…drake is the center of attention right now, while common is starting to get his career back on track after 3 years..drake doesnt need to say anything, regardless who the better rapper is

Drake wont respond and IF he do it will be subliminal. Drake is the type of person who will dish it out but cant take it. He’s alot like Nicki Minaj in many ways. And just like her when he does decide to comment he will play the victim role as if someone is bullying him or like he didnt take any jabs.

Common really needs to keep his mouth shut because he sounds bitter and old. I really like his music and its sad that he had to start this whole ‘beef’ in his song Sweet. As a legend he should let younger rappers have their shine

I know a lot of these ppl like to jump on commons bandwagon and bash drake and say how he is better and what not but compare how many times drake has indirectly/directly mentioned common to how many times common has mentioned drake… Yea it kind of speaks or itself. Drake doesn’t need to resort himself to such childishness. His album sales and reviews speaks for itself

    [Reply]

    watever Reply:

@Bloom, but yet drake’s been taking subliminal shots at other rappers all year, and then when he’s called on it, he hides his hands. i’m glad someone finally stood up and shot back. if drake is the best like he and his fans claim then why can’t he step in the ring and battle like other great rappers who claimed to be the best have done. he wants to be the king in hip hop but then runs away when challenged directly. if that’s his move then he needs to stay in the pop lane and stop claiming to he’s the best in hip hop .

I hate when the gods get to acting like the broads….

He will stop when Drake stops? Type of childish shit is that? If you want to be that immature then I will tell you what my teacher told me when I always use to say that when I was TEN.

“It doesn’t matter who started it you both are in trouble be the bigger person and stop”

    [Reply]

    AlxZeGuy Reply:

@Shade, Dude, there’s a difference between a quarrel and a hip hop beef/battle. We get to see two great rappers get at it! Drake should definitely get back at Com after Com KILLED it on the Schemin’ remix, it’s all good homie! It’s a battle of wordplay, flow and rhymes, not fists and guns.

So, as someone mentioned earlier in the comments; as Drake has been claiming to be the best for quite a while, he should prove it! He could be a real challenge for Com to be honest and even if he loses, he’ll get a real chance to prove his worth.

    Peace and Love

    [Reply]

    100% true Reply:

@AlxZeGuy, that the gospel truth! Drake defend your claim, don’t be a chicken! Com is waiting for in in the ring and the world is watching how you handle this true “hip hop” challenge.

This is Hip Hop, Mcs know this, aint nothing wrong here, Eve did it, Biggie did it, Jay z did it, DMX did it, Nas did it, T pac did it, Ja rule, Ice cube did it etc. Its not a strange territory for real MCs at all.

Even nicki minaj had her chance and lost to lil kim. But she still had her deluded fans buying her cds. So Drake don’t be scared, main stream buys anything anyways.

People like to say common is better because he has been around longer. yeah the lyrics in his diss was koo but when it comes to lyrics, showmanship, and pure talent, drake got him beat. and common KNOWS that. common wants to get his music buzz back up but it ill never be higher than drakes.

    [Reply]

    Mats Reply:

    @Lio Magic,
I have been to both of their shows & Common is incredible. As far as albums are concerned Common has a bigger catalog (because he’s been around longer) & his shiiii is on point. Drake is good about talking about ‘his’ life & ‘his’ relationships. Til he raps something like “Retrospect Of Life” there’s nothing to talk about. I like them both dont get me wrong, but if it werent for Common coming being a ‘mostly’ conscious rapper, then Drake wouldn’t have been able to come out & be ‘appreciated’ for his mildy ‘emo’ rap that he does. They are both lyrical but this isn’t a genuine beef or battle this is purely fun. People run online & make up shiiii. These interviews set Common up to look like he’s seeking shiii & twisting people’s words. This all is played. As far as sales, That’s irrelevant, & buzz??? Common is a prime tv show, performing on every outlet possible (including for the president), doing films & has one at Sundance now, already a legend, a critically acclaimed album & a New York best seller (to name a few) so kill that shiii! So far all the movies Drakes doing is “Ice Age”. Hes extremely talented but has yet to reach his pinnacle & show long gevity… Which cones in time, so at this point there is no comparison what so ever.Drake may never reach the sales that Nelly had, but taking a look at Nelly’s career in the present those sales don’t mean much now :/
Let’s leave it at the ‘beef’ needs to be dropped ok?

Common’s just tryna get some attention. I know album sales don’t verify your status as an artist, but Drake did sell a hell of a lot more copies than Common did. I think Common’s desperate for some sales. 50k isn’t too impressive compared with 700k.

    [Reply]

    watever Reply:

@Jon, common is staring in his own tv show and in a new film that getting good reviews. he’s been in the game 20 years and 2-3 classic albums on his resume. you really think he’s doing this for album sales or attention? common’s not lil kim, who was outta the game for a long time. and he’s not some no-name rapper trying to get on. he’s already established(and rich). he doesn’t need album sales as a stream of revenue. only fickle pop fans are concerned about album sales anyway. that feel like they can’t enjoy an artist or album unless everyone else seems to enjoy it too. sheep following sheep.

People need to listen to that schemin verse a few more times because as simple as it was its going over peoples heads. And sales dont determine how good you are, but when you reach for them thats what its about. You dont have to be young or old to see that.

There was no need for Common to start a stupid diss.
There on two different levels. Plus Common has no reason to diss, he’s been here and is known as a pioneer for Chicago hip hop. I feel he lost a bit respect for that. I know he did from my end.

  19. So Odd

@Thisisreallynotcool and the rest of you cloned out zombies. It’s not about $$$$$ or record sales, it’s about talent and making the people feel good about themselves.

Rappers got you fooled in this crashing economy. All these cats(pzzy nggas) talk about is $$$$, cars, and material THINGS. They’re worst then the republicans who would love to see your broke azz on a plantation, in a kitchen, or somewhere working for nothing. They rub their wealth in your faces and you eat it like it’s the best meal you ever had. It’s true this is the McDonald’s generation. You kids think eating a Big Mac everyday is healthy, and you turn your nose up at healthy food. I guess that’s what you get when you been eating garbage all your life, don’t know when something good is in front of you.

Stop eating shyt, stop listening to shyt that put’s you down then tells you to go buy it, stop respecting cats that don’t give a damm about you. Common loves the people and you hear it in his music. Wayne, Jay-Z, RR, Kanye, and etc only care about the next paycheck and the next car they gone drive. Need an example, look at how Bow Wow treats his family with all the wealth he has.

Don’t be a fool and stop eating Bllsht!

    [Reply]

  20. Shade

All I hear is talk! I bet none of you common defenders didn’t even buy his album. You guys are just drake haters. Show me a song of Common’s that proves he is a better music artist then Drake. Go head.

    [Reply]

@Shade, Go listen to “I used to love her” or “the corner” or “the people”. They’re all classic songs. Or better yet listen to the entire Resurrection, Like Water For Chocolate, Be, & Finding Forever albums. That is timeless music. The music drake is making will be forgetting 10 years from now.

  21. So Odd

I’d like to see you fans stop swinging on these artist balls like they your life support. They provide you with style, culture, swag, and conversation, which is sad. You need to look within instead of defending these cats. I like Drake’s music. I also like Devin the Dude, but I wouldn’t play it in front of moms. Enjoy the music for what it is, art and entertainment. It’s not apart of your life.

i like drake and all his mixtapes and albums are hot. but common is lyrically better and thats just due to the fact that he’s old school and very intelligent, i hope drake has a comeback and this turns into a real battle, not anything dangerous but 2 great emcees goin at each other creating a buzz from it. i personally think common would win but drake would show that he’s still not one to fuck with. and album sales don’t mean shit coz drake sold more than the 2 best rappers alive (kanye and jay z) but only an idiot would claim that he’s harder than them
