Christina Aguilera Sings ‘At Last’ at Etta James’ Funeral [Video]

Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera paid tribute to her idol, Etta James, as the blues legend was laid to rest at a Los Angeles-area church today. Dressed in all black, the pop star belted out James’ classic “At Last,” sharing some heartfelt words with the congregation.

“I have to first of all say what an amazing honor it is for me to have been welcomed here today, invited here, to pay tribute to the great Ms. Etta James,” said an emotional Christina. “I went around the world throughout all my career saying that Ms. Etta James was my favorite singer in the whole wide world.”

Watch her stirring rendition below.

@yoooo, If You Compare Etta To Bey, Beyonce gave the songs lyrics life. & Christina did it well but made it all about her voice!

The song is about purity and the words, Etta & Bey did that. Christina didn’t!!! Sorry.

If Were going to talk about vocals you can’t compare because Christina wouldn’t dare try and sing a beyonce note nor would Bey to christina so their both legends in their own right.

    [Reply]

    yoooo Reply:

@Lauryn, And christina sung with PASSION! She went in! That was her favorite singer of all time so she sung her heart out.

@yoooo, Passion? Or do you mean FAILURE. She over sings and it’s okay. She doesn’t posses vocal CONTROL, or musicality.

@KillBill92, no, i’m pretty sure i meant passion.

    KillBill92 Reply:

@yoooo, Xtina has nice voice, but when it comes to delivery she SUCKS big time. Every word song in the song had a grunt, or over used run.

    [Reply]

    yoooo Reply:

@KillBill92, naw she switched from light to hard in the beginning. Look it was her performance to her favorite singer in the entire world. It was her goodbye present to Etta and she caught the holy ghost!

    KillBill92 Reply:

@yoooo, I have to DISAGREE you should try researching HER singing AT LAST before and you could see that she sings it the same way. It’s not no holy ghost it’s how she sings, which is horrible and a disgrace to VOCALIST like BEYONCE, MARIAH, AND WHITNEY.

    Esmée Reply:

@Lauryn, I totally agree with you! Beyoncé and Christina are both good in what they do, in their own ways. But we all know that Beyoncé is way better than Christina. Christina sings absolutely beautiful, but she doesn’t bring the emotion that this song need. She only shows that she can sing. Beyoncé gives me the right feeling with this song. Xtina did it beautiful, but Beyoncé would have been STUNNING! Beyoncé absolutely won this “battle”.

omg that note….she was as raw and emotional as Etta was during her live renditions, her speech made me tear eyed honestly…..Etta was a true inspiration to christina, u can notice it when she does adlibs and riffs lol, she almost copies her….my god!

RIP ETTA JAMES and thank u christina for introducing Etta to me 9 years ago

    [Reply]

    vbabygirl Reply:

@smauas Sorry but I have NEVER heard Etta sing with all those ad libs and riffs. Have you even listened to Etta’s version? Its the epitome of SIMPLE sweet soul, no ridiculous runs and misplaced yelling. I’m not even a big Beyonce fan, but her version was CLEARLY more true to Ettas version. Its all about letting the LYRICS do the talking. Etta had a HUGE thing against Beyonce after she got to sing At Last at the inagural ball for Obama and Etta never liked her since so its no surprise that Beyonce was not invited to the funeral.

Her powerful, raw, deep and rich voice has moved me in so many ways over the years. Her voice is truly a gift from God and reminds me of the jazz and soul legends from the 1960′s and earlier that touch me like she does.

@maya I honestly believed that Etta claimed to liked Christina’s rendition because she liked Christina as a person and hated Beyonce for singing At Last at Obama’s inagural ball. Before that happened Etta was practically singing Beyonce’s praises untill Obama chose Beyonce over her to sing it. At that point she felt threatened as if Beyonce was trying to upstage her. Christina always came off as humbled by Etta James and that probably weighed into why she liked her version. Besides, who cares if Etta claimed she liked it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and PLENTY of people thought it was WAY over the top. @maya,

    KillBill92 Reply:

@yoooo, Christina isn’t a better singer, she has a good tone quality, but bad technique. Christina was only recognized as “THE VOICE OF OUR GENERATION” when she was out around the time BRITNEY, AALIYAH, PINK, MYA, & ALICIA KEYS WERE SOLO. BUT WHEN BEYONCE became solo you saw that title slowly fade away, as BEYONCE been recognized as a vocal BEAST. national anthem, a song for you, AT LAST, and FEVER have shown that BEY could sing better, renditions than XTINA. BTW people compare BEY N.A TO WHITNEY’S N.A

    KillBill92 Reply:

@yoooo, Your emotions are an connection between the ARTIST & THE FAN/LISTENER, and when BEY sangs I feel where she is coming from, pure emotion so their for your invalid. Whitney isn’t GOD, she’s human and I could compare her I don’t think everything SHE sangs is worth calling it the best, Somethings she sounds DAMN GOOD, and SOMETHINGS I think BEY has topped that’s with every artist. People like you feel as though Legends are irreplaceable, which in fact people are better than some of them but its the LEGENDARY status that makes them great.

She sounded great and it was a big performance because she was actually a huge fan of Etta James and letting the emotion not the technical, rehearsed vocals take over (i.e.Beyonce rendition)

She really bares her soul when she performs and makes me feel every emotion of the song even if I may have never experienced what she’s singing about. I love Christina with all my heart and what an honor to be chosen by Etta’s family. Etta was always fond of Christina and nothing but wonderful things to say about her when they did their 2006 photoshoot. I could feel every emotion when Christina hit that big note, you can tell Christina really misses her and her speech was so sincere.

    [Reply]

  43. yes

First of all that was a beautiful, heartfelt tribute and absolutely chilling. She brought that song to church, literally and figuratively. Perhaps some of you are not used to listening to gospel and soul performances, because THAT is how it’s done. And to say that she was riffing too much during a performance that was a tribute to Etta James is ridiculous, as she is the person that influenced Christina to sing the way she does in the first place. Etta was the queen of riffs, runs, and growls. If you knew anything about Etta you would know that Christina doesn’t just get it from nowhere.

Second of all, I can’t begin to tell you how unbelievably tacky and uncalled for it is for people to be speaking negatively and harshly about someone’s performance at a FUNERAL of all places. Sometimes people really need to bite their tongues and realize that this performance was meant for Etta and not so they could argue about why their favorite singer is better than anyone else. Grow up and show respect. This was their goodbye to Etta and she deserved a balls to the wall performance. Christina sung her heart out for the woman she idolized and that’s what’s truly important here.

Unlike a certain someone Christina has always said Etta James was her biggest inspiration, she didn’t tweet about this to get promo even her fans didin’t know she was going to be there. She doesn’t have to sound like a goat to know she uses vibrato. Christina slayed and Esmeé stays mad. The performance was perfect because the audience felt every emotion. Singing at a funeral is not about singing like you’re doing a recital to whoever said they’re a voice major. Christina made it and doesn’t need to follow the rules. You seem to have all that training but I don’t see anybody checking for you and they never will.

Etta’s family clearly loved the performance since several of them took out their phones to record her legendary performance, were waving their arms side to side and gave her a standing ovation. They also handpicked her. All the major media outlets are giving the performance rave reviews as well. When have people ever raved about Beyonce’s version or anything the girl sings a ballad live? Unless she’s shaking her booty, no one ever gives a rats about her voice. It’s a shame she had to lipsync “Love On Top” at the VMA’s so people would think she can throw down with her voice alone. It’s not going to happen boo boo. Ingrid Jackson is phony and is never pulling off a vocal performance as well as Christina. The only thing Beyonce has is technique, but she has no soul. She has the voice of any other R&B girl and can’t sing half as good as Brandy or Tamia. Have a row of seats.

Who goes to a funeral with that much cleavage hanging out? Nice rack, but a little inappropriate.

This was a good version, but sometimes Christina does too much for me…I liked Beyonce version because it was simple. @lisa your above comment is ignorance at its best!!

I think many of you have never had the responsibility of singing at a funeral. I cannot tell you how tough that is alone and then to sing for your idol and inspiration for your career. Bravo to Miss Aguilera, amazing job.

Christina has now two performances that will be remembered for all-time, this and the James Brown Grammy tribute. I noticed she has two videos on Youtube of this performance that are over 1 million views in a day as well.

Like it or not, the fact is this performance made the public feel something and her voice is becoming legendary. Beyonce will prob always get her in album sales/popularity..but among real legends, Christina is the go to/preferred pop star. That is a fact.

I’ve sang at funerals many times and I know how emotionally overwhelming it can be. However, Christina has ALWAYS sung At Last in this over the top fashion just like she does most of her songs and it can get annoying and not palatable to hear after a while. Its like frosting on a cake, she puts gobs and gobs on it till you don’t even taste the cake anymore. I didn’t feel any emotion I just heard runs after EVERY line and thought to my self: Can’t she just SING THE SONG. Not everyone in the ‘public’ agrees that Christina is turning out to be a legendary singer. She gets criticized A LOT by professionals due to her lack of control. No one is denying her raw talent or prowess but being an effective vocalist is more than that. Had she had toned it down with the riffs it would have sounded excellent. @R.Y.,

Why must there always be a competition about who sang it better? Each woman is beyond talented.

    R.I.P. Etta James.

@So Odd How is someone an idiot for not liking her performance? Everybody has different tastes in music and singing and they have the right to express those views. There are Plenty of people, including industry professionals who do not enjoy that type of singing even if she is talented.

No one sings like Christina. None. Beyonce’s version is flat. I couldn’t even listen beyond the first minute. Christina is all about her craft, beyonce is all about bubblegum music. So stfu stans

In no way do I think Beyonce is the best singer in the world. However, Beyonce’s version was sweet, soulful, and SIMPLE. Nothing flat about it. Christina is rarely about the craft. She is about SHOWBOATING. Its hard to listen to her drown out the melody and lyrics of EVERY song with a riff and holler at every turn. She doesn’t know how to just feel a song and let it ride. She just has to strangle the hell out of it. That’s not craft. Craft is listening to the lyrics, genre and tone of the song, and appraoching it accordingly. She just hasn’t proven to be a ‘thoughtful’ singer yet despit her raw talent. Also, Christina is just as much bubblegum (if not more so) than Beyonce. She has always been a pop singer in and out and sings every song like a pop singer even when its a soul classic. NO VERSATILITY.

O.k. Let me say this once and for all. Christina Aguilera tries too hard. All that vibrato and overuse of falsettos and melisma is annoying. She sounds like a fool. After Whitney Houston hit the scene, almost every young female singer wanted to sound like her, to the point that they began sounding ridiculous. But let’s face it, the masses love white singers that try to sing like black folk, even if it’s overdone. I couldn’t even get through the Etta James tribute without saying,”shut the phuck up bitch”.
