New Music: Dawn Richard – ‘Black Lipstick’

Black Lipstick

Dawn Richard protects herself from the evils of the music business on “Black Lipstick,” her edgy new record.

“‘Black Lipstick’ is the story of how I found out I needed armor,” explains the former Dirty Money diva, who recently parted ways with Bad Boy. “It’s the trap. The music industry is described as a mysterious woman. The seduction and the betrayal of her. I saw in color but as soon as my eyes set on her, all that was seen was black and white. That is when I knew I needed to put my armor on.”

The Druski-produced track is one of seven that will appear on Dawn’s digital EP Armor On, available March 27.

@Truth, Why would she want to stay with Diddy? Have you researched & saw the history of Bad Boy, or did you read the description of this post? 1st off, the music industry is f’d up. Being signed is like signing away your life & soul. For 2, Dawn is a real artist, releasing herself from Bad Boy allowed her to make amazing music & expand her artistry. I’m sure she probably asked to be released, & like she said Diddy agreed & let her. This is a great move.

Dawn is the BUSINESS. I am happy she parted ways with Bad Boy and is finding her own niche. All this work is going to pay off for her because I think people are really starting to notice that she is not playing around. Kalenna’s free mixtape is awesome too. It feels more like a full length album. Keep doing your thing ladies!

Some of your favourite artists could learn from the passion, approach and artistry Dawn Richard has for music.

Once again, Druski. Boy I hear him on there. Dru is a gift from God and Dawn better get on her knees and thank The Heavenly Father for bringing Dru into her life. 2012 Darkchild & Brandy type marriage right here.

And ‘Truth’. Dont worry about Dawn being signed. There is a young red headed white boy in the UK named Edd Shearin who just ripped a hole in the UK charts, unsigned, selling and promoting his music on blogs.

True artist are finally starting to find and true music lovers who are in turn championing what the industry fail to.

@O_O, Good point. He just won 2 Brits too. I think what needs to happen for dawn is for the fans to really support her and become a movement. Without the fans requesting, buying, downloading, sharing her music, she wont be seen. Look at Teambreezy. They are a movement. Chris Brown was blacklisted BUT the FANS pushed for him to be heard. Ed sheeran also built a solid Fan Base that followed him everywhere he went. Also, he connected with different grime (underground hip hop) artist that earned him respect in that culture. He is embraced by everyone because of this.
Leaving Bad Boy was a brave but essential move. She can now work on building her fanbase, write better songs and grow better relationships with other respected artists outside her ‘Urban’ circle. Dawn has the potential to be up there with the greats. Her recent songs have been amazing and she has crafted her own lane by not regurgitating ‘tired’ R&B. The next step is for the fans to support her. People power. Plus, lets remember Adele is signed to a small label and look how far she has taken off. 21 has sold 17 million albums. People Power!

Whats up with diddy losing all of the talented artist. This shit been goin on for over a decade. Allow me to elaborate: Faith Evans, 112, Total, Danity Kane, Day 26, Da Band, Donnie Klang, B5, New Edition, Mase, Shyne, Dream(girl group), Loon, Carl Thomas. SMDH. Diddy makin peoples careers flatline.

@Grant, Diddy is all about Diddy! Danity kane was a multi-platnium selling group and his ego would not allow them to succeed. Best group he had to date! He didn’t support them the way they needed and he disbanded them on TV. Watch the video. Aubrey was not to blame. They needed a quick therapy session, a 3rd album and then they could split and done solo projects under bad boy. Diddy has nothing now, and he put those girls through hell.

I love dawn’s sound,it’s so different from whats out today. Her writing style kinda reminds me of drake’s because she dosen’t talk about the same topic’s as other artists and she doesn’t just throw out random crap you can tell that she really put her time & effort into each song & plus all of her music has meaning behind it. She has the talent she just need’s the right team behind her, to me she would be a breath of fresh air to not only R&B but music in general…I been rooting for her too make it since danity kane

For some reason, I gravitate to anything she puts out.

A few people around me have said that Dawn doesn’t have much to talk about. I was offended, because we all have a story to tell. I’m so glad Dawn is sharing a part of her with us.

I fully support her, as family. She expresses something that I can’t do on my own. Music will change your life if you let it.

Thank you Dawn and Druski for your work. StayPrayedUp!

Diddy could careless how he treats people because he got money. And just because you have money doesn’t mean that you’re happy. Diddy is very selfish if you ask me. Dawn did the right thing moving on. Sometimes hard decisions are the best ones.
