Nas Gets Nostalgic at VEVO SXSW Show

Nas

Nas brought a New York State of Mind to Texas, transforming Austin’s Moody Theater into his old Queens stomping ground, complete with graffitied streets and housing projects, during his VEVO concert at SXSW. The hip-hop vet performed material from his 1994 debut Illmatic, rocking with longtime collaborators Pete Rock and DJ Premier. AZ joined him on “Life’s a Bitch” and The Firm’s “Phone Tap.”

Fresh off debuting his Heavy D-assisted single “The Don” last week, Nas performed it in front of a live audience for the first time. In a Q&A with Steve Stoute at the festival, Nas revealed that his 10th album Life Is Good will be released in late May/June.

Watch highlights from his nostalgic set below.

Legend! I’m still kind of dissapointed he would lower himself and work with someone like Nicki Minaj but I guess money talks…

@Mike, Don’t ever criticize Nas, Nas is one of the greatest rappers of all time, and anybody who knows hip hop knows Nas is one of the greatest of all time. Nas made one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time in Illmatic, and great albums like It Was Written and Untitled. I doubt Nas would work with any rapper because of money. There have been times before where Nas has done songs with both great rappers and terrible rappers, so this isn’t anything knew. Nas did songs with Ja Rule in the past, and did great. I think Nicki Minaj’s music is garbage, but that doesn’t mean Nicki Minaj doesn’t have some type of talent, or isn’t capable of developing talent. I am willing to bet Nas has the best verse on Nicki Minaj’s new album, since Nas had one of the best verses on Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV, and not too many people loved Tha Carter IV outside Lil Wayne’s fanbase. No matter who Nas works with, Nas will always be a great lyrical genius.

@TRA, Nas is a lyrical genius no doubt, but he has been collaborating with wack artists lately. Only a Nas stan wouldn’t be able to see that. As for Nicki Minaj, she is very low on talent right now and I co-sign with Mike on how disappointing this collab. is.

They say Nas has some big debts to pay off, so he probably has no choice anyway.

He really went in on The Don. I think it was to compensate for his mistake. But damn usually Nas’ live performances aren’t all that… he misses too many words out and stuff… but he did well here
