Rap-Up.com || Nicki Minaj Wanted Lauryn Hill on ‘Roman Reloaded’

Nicki Minaj collaborated with everyone from Nas to Beenie Man on her star-studded album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, but there was one elusive artist she was unable to land.

The “Starships” hitmaker revealed that she wanted Lauryn Hill on “Champion,” the hip-hop-heavy cut off her sophomore set featuring Nas, Drake, and Young Jeezy. “I wanted to get her on ‘Champion’,” she told Funkmaster Flex. “That would have been crazy, right? She was my fave.”

While the two have yet to meet, Nicki has nothing but respect for the Fugees frontwoman. “Lauryn to me was the goddess,” she continued. “I’d love to meet her. I’m pretty sure she’s heard me talk about her a billion times.”

She also gave props to other female lyricists including Remy Ma. “Remy at one time brought back this energy that was almost palpable,” she said of the incarcerated MC. “When the ‘Ante Up’ verse came out, if you ain’t know her, you knew her then.”

Foxy Brown was another one of her influences. “She was one of my faves. I had connected with her a lot just because she’s Trini and I’m Trini, and I always thought if I meet her, she would understand me. Foxy Brown was my friend in my head.”

In addition, she shouted out MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Left Eye, Missy Elliott, and Da Brat during the interview.

Why do people act like Nicki is on her 7th album and that this album can break her career? She is a huge cash cow so she will continue to be pushed. She actually is a very talented lyricist I just wish she’d showcase it more. I think she’s gonna make a lot more music in a lot more different styles. Technically she’s still a new artist so there is room to grow. She’s taken more creative chances than most artists & her core fans seem to get “it”. If they want something & she can provide it I tip my hat to her.

@kharma, Actually the “Dreams” your talking about is a Biggie song. Nicki used Biggie’s beat. Kim’s Dreams has a slower instrumental and she listed R&B singers. Nicki listed rappers and her cadence is even like Biggie’s on that song.

N.I.G.G.A.S is basically a run of the mill inspirational hood song and sounds similar in theme and beat to Remy Ma’s “My Life” or any Dipset hood anthem So What are you saying it sounds like “Lighters Up”? “Lighters Up” has a latin feel to and Kim is sing rapping that so how in the world does Niggas sound ANYTHING CLOSE to “Lighters Up” other than it being a female rap song??

@kwayzee, No direspect to Nicki but Lauryn wouldn’t collab with Nicki and a lot of other top performers. Lauryn removed herself from the industry because of what people like Nicki has become. Believe me, MANY people have asked Lauryn for a collab and she’s turned them down. Lauryn will not sell her soul to what music has become nor will she allow Nicki to USE her presence in order to boost Nicki’s overinflated ego. Lauryn’s lyrics are powerful and real. Lauryn Hill isn’t easy to get on a track with, neither is Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson or Eminem. They would be difficult to get on a featuring track.

I swear i can’t go on a Lil Kim or Nicki Minaj post without either one being brought up Lol. Nicki is hot right now, Kim isn’t. But eventually someone will take Nicki’s place too just like 50 took Ja Rule’s place, Lady Gaga took Madonna’s, And Nicki took Kim’s place. So just because you hot now doesn’t mean in a few years you will be. So new artists need to enjoy their 15 minutes of fame. But it’s still good to see all these artists still making music, even if it’s not mainstream.

First off, I may not like her as a artist ,but you got to respect the influence she has over so many children and If there happy why rain on there parade? she’s living in the moment and spreading that through her sound, maybe she won’t be remembered ten years from now so what! youth need fad,crazes,and songs to express that; as for the record breaking of course she is, hip-hop is more mainstream than it has ever been; with kim she came out when what she was doing was unheard or seen of course after those barriers have been pushed it will eventually give the next gen the upper hand, so give respect where its due.
