Whoa, Nelly! Nelly Furtado is back and better than ever on “Big Hoops (Bigger the Better),” the first single off her fourth English album The Spirit Indestructible, due June 19. The Canadian singer shakes it fast and takes it slow on the bombastic Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins production, delivering her signature rap-sung style.
“I bet you never heard something like that,” sings Nelly, who has also collaborated with Nas, Salaam Remi, and Tiesto on the follow-up to 2006’s multi-platinum Loose.
@Kyle, Oh mang! Lol idk about that! the way she is singing and and rapping the chors at the same time is amazing !… Im so ready for her new piece of art! Luv how she mixes feeling and emotion with fresh Dubstep, urban, and cultural music… I can identified with the song! “Promiscuous girl” was the same way! Very versatile… Great choice for the new single!
The beatttt is fucking dopeeee ! The chorus is catchy & the lyrics are nice tho. It grew in me in no time, comparing to these ghetto people on the radio today it seems that Shes back & ready to slay again !
the beat is fucking DOPEEE !honestly i like the urban accent she puts in the song cus it fits the beat & the chorus is mad catchy ! okay she’s back & ready to slay like in 2006 !
Nelly is ALWAYS steps ahead of the game. Most artists look to producers to form their sound. It looks like Nelly makes the producers step up to her level. This sound is fresh & will make other artists follow. YASSSSS!
@HellYeah, well said! I’ve been a huge fan of Nelly for over 10 years now, and she always seems to have more control than people realize. People seem to think her producers just make her sound a certain way, but she’s always got a bigger vision with what feeling she’s trying to express through her music. Great song, can’t wait for the HQ version!
@Nick, I get that feeling too, even though I love this song. It prob won’t be a radio hit because it doesn’t fit in with what’s on radio right now…but hopefully I’m wrong! I hope it’s a big fat hit because she deserves it!(personally, I’m getting bored with pop tarts on the radio…need me some good pop/urban music like this)
@Sun, Wow? Were have you been? DUBSTEP is huge right now! Skrillex is one of the biggest influence on that Genre of music. And now Rihanna with “You Da One”nicki minaj and a couple of tracks on her sophomore album, Madonna and her song, “I don’t give a” have major Dubstep characteristics. I’m diggin the new track! She makes divers music where many people can identify with not even depending on race or culture. Can’t wait for the new album! I’m deff going to get it.. And people lets start support our Fav artist! Stop illegal downloads? Poor nicki could have done so much better in sales. instead 9 million of her tweeter fans dint buy the album.
@Rkell, a couple things to respond to your comment. I’m primarily talking about this single charting well in the US. I’m not sure if you live in the US, but I could definitely see it do well in Europe (because their taste in music is generally more eclectic) and Canada (because it’s Nelly’s home country).
In the US, You Da One wasn’t really that successful, especially compared with the smash success of We Found Love right before. All the songs you listed include dubstep sounds for sure, but I Don’t Give A isn’t a single released to radio…at least not yet. So there’s no chart info on it. Skrillex is successful for sure and he’s definitely the artist that brought dubstep to North America (it’s been popular in Europe for years), but again his single Bangarang didn’t chart that well (though the album charted fairly well for such a specific type of music).
Lastly, I get why people are saying this song has dubstep sounds, but the genre is actually more trip hop. Throughout the song, Nelly is listing references to 90s hip hop and r&b artists and songs (poison, back&forth, no diggity, hi-five, another bad creation, i wanna be down, etc.). She’s paying homage to her years as an artist and music fan before the I’m Like a Bird days. During that time, she was in a trip-hop group called Nelstar…the last 40 seconds of Big Hoops is essentially how trip hop sounds, and it’s her referencing that period in her life. Trip hop is like a hip hop version of dubstep, you might say.
**Takes a deep breath and apologizes for the length of this post**
All of that to say, I know dub step is big, but it’s not very successful on the radio. I hope this song is successful on the radio, but I don’t think it will be because it’s different (better) than what’s on the radio right now…at least in the US.
i couldnt agree more. i love that this woman always has a vision for what she wants and she understands what she needs from a song to work for her unique vocal tone. and lets keep it REAL REAL, this is the freshest, most cutting edge beat that darkchild has produced in over 10 years EASILY.
Overall, this song is over the top dope, though it’s a little hard to hear out what she is saying on the verses. Her voice perfectly matches the fresh beat. Ms. Nelly is back in the game. After listening to the song a few hundred times, It left me wanting more. Nelly is such a tease. Props for Darkchild.
@Ice, I agree i don’t know if this will do like Promiscuous did but glad she is back plus tim and danja are working like crazy on their own projects to probably work with her at the time of making this album
HOT SHIT!!! Rodney laced her with a sick one. I dunno if their chemistry can touch Timmy’s and Nelly’s chemistry though. There shit was on another level. I’m liking what I hear and I’m excited about the album. Loose still gets rotation on my Ipod.

Not too bad. I think it will grow on me a bit. I like the chorus, but the verses were sort of annoying.
