Monica’s ‘New Life’ Makes Top 5 Debut

Monica

Monica has a new lease on life and the Billboard charts. The R&B singer’s sixth album debuts in the top 5 this week.

New Life enters at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 69,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The project, which features her duet with Brandy “It All Belongs to Me,” marks her fifth straight top 10 set. Her previous album Still Standing landed at No. 2 with 184,000 in March 2010.

“What a blessing!! Thanks 2 everyone that supports NewLife,” tweeted a grateful Monica, who also holds the No. 2 spot on the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart.

Elsewhere, Nicki Minaj’s sophomore set Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded drops to No. 3 in its second week with a 68% decline (81,000). It opened at No. 1 last week with 253,000 units sold.

    Dave Reply:

@trish, I agree. So much for her unity with Brandy. She was trying to be nice & unify with her, & it seemed like it ultimately back fired. But I’m happy for her considering they said she’d do 50k-65k, & only make top 10.

@Dave, What does Brandy have to do with Monica’s album sales? Have a seat in the corner an get your life.

    [Reply]

    Dave Reply:

@Blaze, Why don’t you have a seat? I said the unity did not work for her, did it not? Is “It All Belongs To Me” doing good on the charts? What was the reception of it from fans & music lovers? not good. It wasn’t about Brandy, it was about her whole unity thing, riding on the collabo of the song “It All Belongs To Me”, which they really placed as an official 1st single. Get a life, don’t get mad @ my opinion. Everytime she performed the song, everbody wanted to go in on her for singing the way she does, when she did her interview & talked about Brandy’s old beef they called her “Glock” for being honest. So, the “Unity” backfired. The facts are there, now you seat. My bad, you’ve already been seated :)

    @Dave,

I watched every performance of “it all belongs to me” and comments where generally favorable to both monica and brandy’s vocals, of course there were a few haters here and there but still….who was really “going in on her?”
can i have a link to the “glock” interview???

And the “unity” didn’t back fire(nothing negative or career-killing came of it), it just never got as much praise as they thought it would–As it should have. But really if the song went “The man belongs to meeeeeeeeeeeeeee” i do think it would have been soaring right now.

Honestly I LOVE me some Monica but I feel like she lost her sound within this album. The infamous soulful “attitude” she gives off in her music was not present on this album. I just can’t get into it.

A top 5 debut is always a good thing. Great job Monica and I personally think this is her best album yet. It definitely shows her maturity and growth as a musician, a mother, and a wife. The critics were pretty harsh with it but it’s tough nowadays for artists like Monica who just like to stick with what they do best and not try to make their music sound like girls half her age. It’s great R&B music!

    [Reply]

    StrangerInMyHouse Reply:

@Kyle, well Monica didn’t follow any trend or whatever with Still Standing and this album was fine.
New Life loses a lot of the charm Still Standing had. I only like 3 songs on New Life. the rest is too boring for me. One can make great R&B without selling out or following a trend while still don’t losing yourself in slow jams and mid-tempos. there was something missing on this album and It All Belongs To Me didn’t help it. This song just didn’t appeak to me. Sorry. I love Brandy and Monica, but the song… meh.

Amazing is nice and In 3D, Until It’s Gone should have been a hit, it was cool, but they messed up the promo for that one.

    [Reply]

    Kyle Reply:

@StrangerInMyHouse, Good point. I think “New Life” could’ve used one or two up-tempo songs but it didn’t really bother me because on all of Monica’s albums, I always felt she excelled on the slower songs. I think “If You Were My Man” on “Still Standing” was a strong cut because it was right in the middle of the album and broke it up a little. But on “The Makings of Me” I thought the two up-tempo songs were nothing but filler material. I think the lyrical content on the new album is perfect though. It definitely sums up Monica’s life right now. At the end of the day, I think all Monica fans are pretty pleased for the most part.

@ryan, I’m sorry I just dont get it because I’m a fan of Ashanti, when her Declaration album came out in 08′ ppl said it flop she sold 86,000 and her label didn’t back her, so with that said how is Monica being praised, I’m sure she has a bigger fan base than Ashanti’s and a major label . . . I guess ppl just say stuff based on who they like [shrugs]

Monica did GREAT considering!!!! she don’t get nicki minaj promo….nor was she doing performance rituals at the grams, and with madonna…smh. she’s a straight r&b artist!!! and well she basically sold 69k off her name alone cuz she had no radio hit!! anyway im proud of Monica I Love this album!! We are in a time where REAL R&B music is severely on life support…and i can appreciate Mo effort in tryna keep R&B music alive!!! if you didn’t get that with this album then…hey *shrugs* TURN ON THE F****** RADIO!!!!

@The Real B[randy], Sorry but monica fans have been asking for this! They’ve dragged Brandy in the name of Monica ever since Still Standing’s numbers came in. Calling her all kinds of flops for doing 73K her first week. Because of that, they constantly said “OH, Monica can never flop, she’s got an solid, faithful fanbase, etc…Where is that fanbase now? And they actually think 69K is a good look for her? Not here for that. I hope these numbers humble monica’s fans, they needed to be knocked down from their high chairs.

This article is about Monica, not Brandy. 2/11 will be out in JUN12, and I’m lookin forward to hearing what Brandy has been up to.

    [Reply]

    RealHipHop Reply:

@Bran Star, That is not true. Us Monica fans support Brandy. Honestly u all are the ones who constantly throw around her accomplishments in Monica fans faces to downplay her talent. Its mainly other stan bases who bash Brandy. I think some of Brandy’s fans werent too happy about Monica’s successful run because the spotlight wasnt on Brandy for once. U all are used to Brandy being successful that when she’s not u come at Monica, Beyonce, Mary J Blige, Keri Hilson, Ashanti, Rihanna, & whoever else is successful at the moment for validation of Brandy’s star power. U shouldnt have to do that it shows insecurity. Monica has been very supportive of Brandy even while successful and never spoke ill of her. She was even there for her during Dancing With The Stars. Brandy has also been there in support of Monica during her run. So stop the bitterness Monica and Brandy love and support each other why cant we?

    [Reply]

    Dave Reply:

@RealHipHop, Exactly. During this whole run, Brandy fans were ALL throwing shade. I’ve observed & I’ve barely seen Monica fans throw any shade or say anything unless in defense of Brandy fans/stans coming at us. Even back then, Brandy fans were still at it. So, they really need to stop. It’s all love on both sides from them two. I wish the fans could be mature as those two are.

    [Reply]

    Bran Star Reply:

@Dave, No, Monica fans have equally been throwing as much shade. You all have been praying for Brandy to fail ever since Human came out. Saying that she should give up on her singing career. All through the promo for It all Belongs To me, y’all have been so cocky and stuck up saying we should be grateful for monica allegedly helping Brandy’s career with this duet when she needed a helping hand herself. Face the facts, Monica’s fanbase isn’t as solid as y’all think. Her album was doomed after several pushbacks and 3 underperforming singles. Monica had a reality show and hit R&B singles last era, but this era she don’t. Let this experience humble you all cause she ain’t gettin nothing easy.

    Bran Star Reply:

@RealHipHop, No, that’s not true. Monica fans have been shading Brandy ever since Still Standing came out. They’ve been saying, oh yeah Monica’s back, and she left Brandy in the dust, calling her all kinds of flops…I’ve seen monica fans dissing her, making jokes about the car accident, and other things…It’s the same stuff you hating ass monica fans throw against Brandy. You all say she’s ugly, fake, and can’t sing. For TWO whole years this has been going on. And now look at Monica flopping, and y’all still got shit to say. Let this be a lesson to y’all to be humble.

Who cares about Brandy anyway? She may sell because her next single will have Chris Brown on it. Otherwise, her sales would be low too.

Happy for Monica, although this album was pushed back so much people lost interest and downloaded the singles months ago.

    [Reply]

    Bran Star Reply:

@Nick, That’s good. No, I don’t hate monica, I just dislike some of her fans. This is just a little payback! Don’t mind me!

    credits Reply:

    @Bran Star,

If “it all belongs to me” is a flop, than brandy is just as much of a flop as monica is.

how come IABTM is not on itunes and billboards r&b top ten? This is also an indication of where brandy stands now, where are the starz?? the chris brown feature is going to be much needed. Let’s see how brandy does before you start throwing shade.

and don’t get me wrong, i love love love brandy, her unreleased stuff keeps me alive lol.

    [Reply]

    Bran Star Reply:

@credits, IABTM is not Brandy’s single, she has other singles waiting. And if you want to really get into it, IABTM was actually monica’s 3rd single. Her fans better hope that Without You is the breakout single, because RCA has already invested a lot of money in monica’s album.

    credits Reply:

    @Bran Star,

Sure she has another single coming but when ‘the boy is mine’ was out, was it monica’s single or brandy’s single?….It was a duet between the both of them and it appeared on both their albums, just like IABTM will be on both albums. How well single does, is a reflection of both ladies. If the single went platinum, you wouldn’t argue that it is Monica’s single. i like a friendly debate lol.

Oh and i never knew RCA disclosed monica’s finances to the public? :) lol

    [Reply]

    Bran Star Reply:

@credits, The difference is before this year, Brandy and Monica only performed that song together once. With all this promo for IABTM, it’s been more focused on Monica because her album came first. The single’s decline is hurting monica more because she had two singles before this not do to well, and the pushbacks of her album release date didn’t help either. Her era was relying on this more because it was supposed to give Monica’s album the extra push it needed.
