John Legend Defends Kanye West Against Obama’s ‘Jackass’ Comment

John Legend and Kanye West

John Legend linked up with Ludacris to perform their collaboration “Tonight (Best I Ever Had)” off the Think Like a Man soundtrack on Thursday’s “106 & Park.” Backstage, the Grammy-winning crooner spoke about the G.O.O.D. Music album, 2 Chainz’ affiliation with his label, and his upcoming album. He also defended his friend and boss Kanye West against remarks President Obama made about him being a “jackass.”

On the G.O.O.D. Music album: “The camp is growing. Every week there’s like a new person added, but I believe Q-Tip just signed on and we got a great crew of people. I was the first one in that crew, so I’m honored to be a founding member. I’ve done a few hooks for the album and everybody’s putting in verses.”

On 2 Chainz’ affiliation with G.O.O.D. Music: “He’s already part of the crew ’cause he’s been on at least one song and I think he’s gonna be on some more.”

On the possibility of a Best of Both Worlds-type album with Rick Ross: “If we compiled all the joints we did together, it would almost be a Best of Both Worlds album. I think something about his voice and my voice, they’re both very rich in their tone, and we both like that kinda music that’s hard, but it’s still really luxurious and lush at the same time.”

His response to President Obama calling Kanye a “jackass”: “Kanye is my friend and he’s never treated me like a jackass. He’s one of the most talented artists we know in this generation and I feel very fortunate to be able to work with him.”

John Legend is close to completing his new album, due in September. “It should be done in the next month or two,” he said.

If Ye still got the beats like he did for “Let’s Get Lifted,” “The Corner,” “Go!,” etc., I’m coppin’ it.

I agree with Nikkiischillin. Kanye West’s talent is almost as impressive as his ability to portray himself as the world’s biggest jackass. Which is definitely saying something about his level of talent…

@Audrey Hepburn, Nah recently Obama had an interview where he was asked to choose between Jay-Z and Kanye West and he chose Jay-Z, not surprisingly! But after that, Obama reiterated that Kanye was a jackass… But “A talented jackass”

Kanye West is a true jackass. He seems mean and evil. I must say.. and his music is not THAT great. His production is.. but his rapping and writing skills are definitely not.

@*Teairra Mari hates Rihanna*, I think you are stupid and flat out dead wrong, to think Kanye West is mean and evil. You never met Kanye West, or spoke to Kanye West, or had a relationship with Kanye West. Unless you had a relationship with Kanye West, or Kanye West threw a brick through your window, then you have no idea what kind of person Kanye West is. I could be wrong, but it seems like you are judging Kanye West’s music based on his public image of being called a jerk which makes you look bias and dumb.

@Teairra Mari hates Rihanna, even if Kanye West is a jerk and a jackass, you can’t judge Kanye West’s music, if you never listen to any of his albums. I don’t think Kanye West cares about his negative public image, and the biased mainstream media, because Kanye West has won 18 Grammy Awards, has had numerous hit singles, and made 5 straight platinum albums. The Taylor Swift incident and George Bush incident was overblown and overrated. There have been plenty of black and white celebrities who have done far worse things than Kanye West. You need to be careful when you judge someone’s music, no matter what their personalty is.

I think Obama was out of line. Sure, Kanye can be a “jackass” but Obama is the President and I don’t think that name calling makes him look too good.

Am I the only one that wonders why our president is so adamant and concerned about calling pop-culture artists school-yard names like “jackass”? That really is a negative way to portray yourself as a public figure and role model, particularly when you are in such an important position. It also defies some of the principles that he preaches in his “anti-bullying” campaign. Nobody is perfect but I think making the same negative and irrelevant comment more than once is really over the top, particularly when it has nothing to do with his main concern, which is the state of our country…

@Jay, ya see, what president obama said was not so much a shot at Ye’ but just in defense for Taylor swift -America’s sweetheart, his kids are probably big fans of her aswell as MILLIONS of other people. so that (in a way) was the “politically correct” thing to say about him for that incident. BUT i wonder what obama felt about kanye’s comment about Bush and the katrina thing!?

I think Ye has done some things that would qualify him for that jackass tag, HE even admitted that. However, when I met him he was totally cool, gracious & humble. There is no denying his talent. No one does what he does better.

In regards to President Obama, the reporter was lame for bringing up the “jackass” comment again (after all this time) Prez Obama said he liked Ye’s music & that he was talented… and a jackass. He was asked for his opinion and he is entitled to it.

Kanye isn’t really a ‘jackass’ in my opinion. He just speaks his mind and everything he says is true which is why it always turns into controversy.
