Rap-Up TV: Monica Talks Album Sales, New Single ‘Without You’

Rap-Up TV caught up with Monica when she visited Los Angeles this week. Fresh off the release of her sixth album New Life, which debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 69,000 copies, the R&B diva spoke about album sales and how important they are at this stage in her career.

“In this day and age, I’m very conscious of the fact that things have changed,” said the 31-year-old singer. “The days of selling a certain amount of records, especially for a certain genre of music, those days are gone, but I think it says a lot when you have a core group of people that really respect and love the music that you do.”

After reuniting with Brandy on “It All Belongs to Me,” she is readying her next single “Without You,” which was produced by her cousin Polow Da Don. “It was an important song to me on the album because it was the song that I did specifically for my husband,” explained Mo. “[Polow] was able to make a song that was a true testament to the love I have for my husband now.”

And will her hubby, whom she met on set of the video for “Love All Over Me,” appear in the video? “My husband’s a sweetheart, I know he’d do it if I asked him,” she said of the Phoenix Suns star. “I’m really right just now letting him focus on the sport.”

Look for more of our interview with Monica next week.

@hood, tell em again. not buying that ish. they pushed it back hoping the promo from “it all belongs to me” would increase the sells. so she can kill that “i don’t care about the numbers”. call us haters but im just disappointed in her deliverance. i understand she’s married but don’t half ass cause u’re comfortable.#ijs

@ladyrt23,Yes! Preach! She talented and all that but this album was a hott mess and Ive heard her deliver stronger material tehn this. This album is repetitive because it sounds like songs from every different album shes already released. Im mad I even invested my 5.99 at target for the used copy smh

@hood, What do you want her to say? “My record flopped, I’m unworthy and should leave the business”? STFU. Negative ass people these days. If you don’t like the CD then keep it moving. It’s not just Monica either. It’s R&B in general. Times have changed. People don’t want to hear the same music that was popular in the 90′s, they’d rather hear Transformers ass robotic voice dance music.

@hood stfu unless you know the real numbers. She has never been about the numbers. Now or then. People have to telling her whats going on. She loves the music.

i can respect her comment in regards to the amt of copies sold and charting. however, r&b as a genre has nothing to do with her album selling 69,000 copies. as we all know, her 2010 album sold more and that was with her EBT (i mean BET) reality show. shes had waaaay more exposure on her collab with Bran. with that being said, her lack of sells were due to the lack of quality music.

Monica has always been about the music and sanging. She has never cared about charts and sales. That’s why she walks away from the music business for 4-5 years and drops an album when she gets ready. The only reason there was only 2 years between Still Standing and New Life was because Monica promised the fans she promised the fans there wouldn’t be a long gap before the next album. With that said, New Life, is one Monica’s best albums, in my opinion. It’s a mature album that I can vibe to from beginning to end.

Monica is very articulate and speaks the truth. I honestly don’t think the sales of her album bother her. She’s been in the game for 15 years and to still rack up top 10 albums says A LOT about her longevity. Not to mention, whenever the album is going to be talked in the future people aren’t going to remember what it sold in the first week; instead they’ll remember that it debuted in the top 5. Support REAL R&B music!

@ wrong LOL…..its not that serious..the actual num are 69,476…I also work in the industry..this ain’t about her talent , she flopped because the 1st single was the same tired formula. R&b singer sings over 90′s rap beat..been done 100 times..the 2nd single was just weak and then rca reached and tried to recreate the brandy thing and it failed..the music is just not good and thats why it ain’t selling..last album she had 1hit single and they drop the album this album it took 3 singles to get her album out..she can sing but everything she is saying is threw her label mouth not hers…don’t get mad cause her shit trash

Love her..she looks gorgeous. The song is great and I don’t think she should worry about numbers either. It would be great if real music still charted like it did in the 90′s!

I have worked in the music industry a VERY long time and what Monica said us TRUE… 2years is a long time. Example of why what Monica said is true Malanie Fiona sold 20 thousand copies after winning 2 Grammys and having 3 hits!!! For Nikki Minaj to have the #1 R and B album should tell you alot. Monica’s music is mature and has a core audience it targets and let me tell you this. She is SMART to do so. Anita baker makes about 8million a year touring to this same core. Do I exspect you to understand NO but google all r and b artist sales for THIS year NOT last year or year before. Monica spoke the truth… Monica did great for this climate

FIRST AND FOREMOST….MONICA IS ONE OF THE REALEST PPL IN THE INDUSTRY….SHE SPEAKS TRUTH AND EVERYTHING THAT SHE DOES COMES FROM THE HEART…SHE DOESNT DO IT FOR HER OR HER HUSBAND….SHE DOES IT FOR HER KIDS. SHE’S A VERY HARD WORKING WOMAN AND STILL TO THIS DAY SHE HAS NOT GAVE UP…SHE STILL GOING STRONG AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO…MOST ARTIST GIVE UP AFTER SELLING LOW NUMBERS…DO U THINK SHE’S GON’ GIVE UP…NO!!! SHE STILL GON CONTINUE TO DROP ALBUMS REGARDLESS OF WHAT HER NUMBERS LOOK LIKE….HATERS GET A LIFE…..PLZ AND THANK YOU!!!!!!!
