Bobby Brown on Whitney Houston: ‘I’m Not the Reason She’s Gone’

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown

Bobby Brown opened up about the death of Whitney Houston during a one-on-one interview with Matt Lauer on the “Today” show. The New Edition singer, who learned about his ex-wife’s passing through his bandmate Ralph Tresvant, recalled first hearing the tragic news and responded to criticism that he was partly responsible for her demise.

“I just started crying,” said Brown, 43. “You never expect someone close to you to just die. It was really hard.”

The toxicology report concluded that Houston died from accidental drowning and had cocaine in her system at the time of death, which surprised Brown. “I was hurt. Me being off of narcotics for the last seven years, I didn’t know that she was struggling with it,” he said. “But at the same time, it’s a hard fight to maintain sobriety that way.”

While he doesn’t blame himself for her death, he wonders what could have been done differently. “Maybe I coulda done something different to ensure that she had a longer life,” he added. “But you have to want it, you know? Some things just happen. God probably just needed her for the choir up there in heaven and that’s the biggest voice you have.”

Despite those who say he contributed to her death, he says drugs were a part of her life before he met her. “I didn’t get high on narcotics before I met Whitney. I smoked weed, I drank beer, but no, I wasn’t the one that got Whitney on drugs. I’m not the reason she’s gone.”

Their 2005 reality show “Being Bobby Brown” shined a spotlight on their relationship. “It makes me feel terrible, but I know differently. If anyone ever knew us, if anybody ever spent time around us instead of time looking through the bubble, they would know how we felt about each other. The reality show gave us a wake-up because we were able to see what other people were saying about us. We were able to see that our drug use had affected our relationship, had affected the love that we felt for each other.”

Brown, who’s about to get married again soon, will always have love for his ex-wife. “I had 14 beautiful, beautiful years with that woman. I loved that woman with everything that I am and I believed she loved me the same way,” he said. “Even though I’m getting married soon, my fiancée knows how I felt about that woman, my kids know how I felt about Whitney, that’s no secret. I was in love with her deeply.”

I believe that she was using before him as well, he didn’t make the situation any better but this started long before it began to show.

@uh….hold up lil boo, I agree. I think he made the sitation worse because he probably enabled her usage but still, they have been seperated for quite some time and she was still using after their marriage as well. At the end of the day, it was an addiction and unfortunately she couldn’t overcome it. It’s a terrible way to die. RIP Whitney!!!

    @Kyle, Right about that

@uh….hold up lil boo, One of Whitney’s brothers is a semi-addict himself and he and Whitney ran in high and powerful circles. She was a superstar when she met Bobby. Nobody will tell me that she didn’t come into contact with drugs before Bobby. Get real. People forget that Bobby was the younger one in the relationship. Whitney had more life and career experience than Bobby. SMH.

Let’s not make this about blame lets just accept that she demons and love and appreciate her legacy and keep her memory alive. Not her personal life but her music and the class she exhibited in most situations. I hate how when celebs die they become these saints worthy of worship. Wrong. They were just gifted humans. We all have gifts just not the same ones.
No human being is worthy of worship. Tupac, Aaliyah, Michael and Whitney included.

  2. Yeah

    RIP Whitney

She was on drugs b4 she met him, but him joining in with her didnt make it any better, he coulda helped her get clean but instead..

  5. ItsMeBitches

He is not to blame at all whether he joined her or not Whitney was already on a path of destruction, she was doing cocaine way before Bobby and she damn sure didnt stop after him, there has been drugs in her family all of these things have been confirmed and thank Pat for being real and letting it be known that Whitney was influenced by no one but herself and she had issues way before Bobby.

  6. Jim

That nigga know he the reason that bitch died

  7. Gotta Damn Louize

Have No Idea why would People have Blamed Bobby Brown for Whitney houston Drug problem and the fact the she was still on IT at that time before her death

  8. [email protected]

HEre’s the blunt truth… Like sum1 said, Whitney was just using him -of course, she was! She’s said, she lives a life of sex, drugs, and rock n roll, and that’s how she acted and believed before she met Bobby, she was already on the drugs, now she needed sumbody who she can play out the sex and rock n roll with, Bobby Brown was the perfect candidate for that. WHITNEY HOUSTON PLAYED BOBBY BROWN, to live out the teenage years she never had.

  9. Triniti

I saw that bullshit interview. Whatever, Bobby. You expect us to believe that–FINE. But as her HUSBAND, you got high right along with her. So, you’re at fault for not trying to HELP her.

  10. TheDreamer

I wouldn’t blame Bobby Brown. She was taking drugs before she met him and it was her choice. All I can say is RIP Whitney.
