Rap-Up.com || ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ Showdown: Mary J. Blige vs. Marsha Ambrosius

Mary J. Blige showed her stars and stripes on Saturday, performing the National Anthem at the 138th Kentucky Derby. Looking like a Southern belle in a red dress with matching hat and gloves, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul put on a royal performance, winning praise from the 150,000 spectators.

Meanwhile, Marsha Ambrosius had the honor of singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Mayweather vs. Cotto fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas later in the day. The British songstress got in the ring and flexed her vocal chops while delivering the patriotic anthem, later tweeting, “I do it! Living my dreams!!!”

Mary did great. Marsha was okay, but I can barely take all the vibrato that she uses. It can be a bit much sometimes. Plus, Mary is an American and the crowd was feeling every word that she sang.

I like both artists and think they have great songs! I actually enjoyed Mary in concert a few times. However, both performances were all over the place. Certain moments of Mary’s performance was ok, but I was nervous for her… (thinking hope she stays on key)… Marsha Ambrosious voice is so pitchy…she really sounds awful during her performance… This was a hot mess, but I think she has her own special style of singing which matches her songs but she should deinfitely stay in her range.
