Rap-Up.com || Nicki Minaj Calls Into Funkmaster Flex to Address Summer Jam Cancellation

After pulling out of her appearance at Sunday’s Summer Jam, Nicki Minaj phoned into Funkmaster Flex on Hot 97 to address her absence. During the one-hour talk, Young Money’s First Lady explained what led to the decision, her reaction to Peter Rosenberg’s diss, and the lesson she learned from Lil Wayne, who made the executive decision to yank YMCMB from the lineup. She also fired back at Flex for belittling her album sales, reciting exact figures.

“When you disrespect Nicki Minaj, you’re disrespecting my fans,” said Nicki, who plans to make it up to her Barbz by playing a free show in New York City.

Even though Kanye West is a great mainstream hip hop artist who makes both mainstream hip hop music and mainstream pop music, Kanye West never comes across as a desperate artist who will completely sellout to get attention. Kanye West has a good sense on how to balance both hip hop and pop without forcing it down your throat. Missy Elliott is a great mainstream hip hop artist who also knows how to balance both hip hop and pop. It is okay to do pop music as long as you stay true to yourself as a real music artist.

Kanye West is way more hip hop than Chris Brown. When Kanye West first came out and started his career, his first album College Dropout was completely hip hop. Kanye West didn’t start making more pop music until he came out with Graduation. When Chris Brown first came out, he was making a lot of R&B songs. As soon as Chris Brown’s second album came out, Chris Brown started to crossover into pop music. After the Rihanna incident, Chris Brown started to make more hip hop music.

Kanye West started his career as a rapper/producer, and Chris Brown started his career as a R&B singer. Chris Brown and Kanye West are two completely different artists from two different genres. Hip Hop is completely different from R&B. The only thing that Chris Brown and Kanye West have in common is that they are both good at making pop music, other than that, they don’t have nothing else in common.

I don’t think anyone really has a problem with her “going commercial”, it’s just how she chooses to do it. Many people didn’t have a problem with “SuperBass”, which crossed over to mainstream appeal, because she was still rapping really well over it. It was a natural progression. On the other hand, “Starships” and 70% of her album sounds like a Gaga-KatyPerry-Ke$ha style hijack of annoying dance music where all she’s doing is singing. We get it, you want to get money, but do it with integrity by not sacrificing your artistry. It was a complete 180 and it shocked people who really do think she has potential as a great emcee. And I think that’s what Rosenberg was really getting at. “We’ll respect you when you start respecting yourself and your art, and stop changing yourself just to sell records.”

nicki lied about the album sells her album is only #1 on R&B and Hip Hop on the billboard charts cause no one above her has albums out and its on #22 on billboard top albums so for nicki to be near 1 million she should be in the top 10 and and plus her album is not on any other chart and Pink Friday only sold for 1.7 million and starships only sold for 2 million and as far as nicki being the first to have album 1 in some cites when it first came out is not true im not a kim fan but i would say no one beat her yet she had #1 in 50 countries and i know alot about nicki and all her sells iam a true fan i know alot and i will say nicki has been a liar and as far as the fans being mad when the man dissed nicki no one cared people was laughing and i was there to see nicki and others but i will say this the man who used to own nicki was there alone with Pusha T and Lil Kim and her boyfriend ok and another thing nicki album is not gold yet barbz ok

Kudos to her for defending herself but if I were in here position, I wouldn’t have even stayed on the phone with him that long. He kept missing the point. It was like she was arguing with a brick wall. Like she said, he wasn’t listening. As far as Rosenberg, why would you diss your headlining act? In the first 30 mins, I feel she hit the nail on the head multiple times. “If you don’t like me, don’t book me.” After that, I would have hung up. I don’t know much about Flex nor do I care to know much about him, but he is very disgusting and annoying to me. He sounded like a hysterical baby. He pretty much threw a tantrum over her not performing and disrespected her just as bad as Rosenberg did that day.

Honestly you have to admit starships is NOT a rap song it is a POP/DANCE song and no matter how you put it that is true so i don’t see why everyone is making a big deal when the KNOW Starships isn’t hip hop or rap.

As far as Lil Wayne pulling Nicki Minaj i think she should have still performed….Her fans and everyone payed money to see her perform then the young money crew and herself left…. i mean she knows being a celebrity and everything that there is going to be haters and when she started rapping she knew that with becoming a celebrity/rapper she would get hate so she shouldn’t leave just because someone says one of her songs isn’t true hip hop. I mean some fans came from out of the state because that is a HUGE concert so even if she is throwing a free concert not all her fans who were there originally will get the free concert they deserve.
