Usher’s ‘Looking 4 Myself’ Debuts at No. 1

Usher

If you’re looking for Usher, you can find him at the top of the charts. The R&B singer returned to familiar territory this week with his latest album Looking 4 Myself, which enters at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Usher’s seventh album sold 128,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It becomes his fourth consecutive No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 following 2010’s Raymond v. Raymond, which moved 329,000 units in its opening week. However, it is also his lowest first-week sales for a regular studio album since 1997’s My Way (67,000).

The lead single “Climax” spends its ninth straight week at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, while his latest single “Scream” holds the No. 7 spot on the Digital Songs chart.

Looking 4 Myself is not only a hit in the U.S., but worldwide. It tops the iTunes charts in nine other countries including the U.K., Germany, Japan, and the Netherlands.

Elsewhere on the U.S. charts, British export Ed Sheeran arrives at No. 5 with his first full-length album + (42,000), while Waka Flocka Flame’s sophomore set Triple F Life: Fans, Friends & Family bows at No. 10 with 33,000. The Atlanta rapper’s 2010 debut Flockaveli entered at No. 6 with 37,000.

Yeah sure. Then the following week it fell to Justin Beiber’s “Believe.” LOL. He purposely released it on a week when nothing else came out to score a #1 spot – which really isn’t a #1.

Well at least it went to number one. But Usher aint been great since Confessions. Yes Usher might have top ten single but I bet Chris Brown album will have better first week sales.

You know CB gonna pull some last minute stunt just to get everyone’s attention. Look at how he took the attention off Usher’s album last week after the brall with Drake. Lol

He’s going to have another no.1 album, his best first week sales, and awards for that album. The reason why people kind’ve shoved Usher is because he was EVERRRYYYYTHINGGGG r&b but pop? People weren’t expecting that. Confessions was def the best album by him. His debut had it going on too. Fortune, July 3rd :)

I hate when people come on him talking bout Confessions. He is not making a Confessions Part 2. Get over it. And once you have been out for a while your sales begin to drop.
Confessions wasn’t even his best album. just his most successful. And Here I Stand was almost just as good as Confessions. People are just blinded by the fact that it didn’t sell as much and think it was a bad album based on that.

    [Reply]

    Aminebs Reply:

@Miles, Here I stand was as good as confessions ??
Have yo even listened to the two albums ? I guess you only listened to love in this club & moving mountains !
Confessions was the whole package , every song of the play-list was a hit , I’ll go much further and say that Confessions was one of the best R&B albums ever made, he set the bar so high with that album so that’s why fans compared every album since to that masterpiece .

    [Reply]

    Miles Reply:

@Aminebs, Confessions wasn’t even all that to me. My Way and 8701 was his best albums in my opinion. And Every song on Here I Stand could have have fit right in with Confessions and no one would have noticed. He had Trading Places, Love In The Club Prt.2, Whats A Man To Do, Something Special, Best Thing, Love You Gently, Forever Young. I think those sound just as good as anything on Confessions. Confessions was just more successful. 2008 was the year when CD sales started to drastically decline and R&B music started to become least successful on the Hot 100. I think if Music in 2008 was like music in 2004 Here I Stand wouldda have been almost as successful as Confessions. I’m not saying it better but I do think it comes pretty close to being as good.

I was excited about the album based off the singles, but after I heard the snippets and listened to the album when it leaked, I was very disappointed. Only half of the album is good, the rest of it is generic pop trash. One of the best tracks, Say The Words, is on the deluxe edition. Usher submitted to the dance trend that is ruining radio right now instead of sticking to his true R&B roots. If he wants to be experimental, take the Miguel approach, not the David Guetta route. Confessions still has longevity, Climax is probably the only track from this album that I’ll care after a few years.

@Miles, @Miles, Usher is not as hot, just face it dude. Look at Jay and Yeezy still selling over 400k first week after all those years. People will support if your material is good. Chris brown is perfect example cos his career should have been over 3yrs ago but because he puts out good material he gets a lot of support.

Usher’s new album has nothing to do with black people not buying it etc. it’s cos it’s nothing special. It’s generic like most pop music out there. That’s the dissapointed!

    Face it Miles!

@King Size, It’s not that at all! In my opinion I think Rap R&B & Hip-Hop does not I mean not mix with POP/TECHNO music. Usher and many other artist going in that route is complete bull. Stay in your lane not what other people are doing. If you listen to ever song that went that rout all the songs sound alike. I live in Seattle and POP/Techno/R&B/Hip-Hop (whatever you want to call it) dominates the radio. Its time for a change I mean do R&B but change it up there’s millions of people in the world that can make tight R&B Hip-Hop Rap futuristic music

    [Reply]

    King Size Reply:

@batman, I agree dat the pop/dance songs sound da same and I wish the trend would end but Usher has always been an artist to take what’s hot at the moment and put his twist on it. Look at “Yeah!” wit the whole crunk thing in 04. in the early 2000′s urban music was popular so the pop stars tried to do urban music. That’s jus how the industry works

the album had a little bit of everything and Usher did good to do that because if he stayed true to one genre… people who want the other genre wont be happy. Even mixing it up people are still complaining. Same thing happened with Beyonce’s 4… Can’t please no one. Veteran’s like them just need to do the music they want and if you don’t like it so what. People aren’t buying music anyway. Artists are better off just releasing singles and going with those sales. smh music is dying.

    [Reply]

  14. bEEzy

Cmon now it’s not about the sales it’s about the music. Y’all keep comparing every work he puts out to confessions but get over it he’s evolving as an artist and that’s what it’s all about. I respect that he went against what the fans wanted to hear (another Confessions) to experiment and try new things, that’s what being an artist is about, kinda like what Beyoncé did with 4. If it didn’t sell like his previous albums, so be it, that’s not going to keep me from enjoying this album which I think is one of his best.

    [Reply]

    Mark London Reply:

@bEEzy, Stop this nonsense with EVOLVING. Thats a lame excuse.

Evolving doesn’t mean you should put out generic music. That’s called regression! Going backwards!

The album sales confirms that! Simple truth! Make good music and we will buy it.

    [Reply]

    batman Reply:

@Mark London, It is about sales even a lot of artist who do interviews talk about it how POP/Dance/Techno is topping the charts and a lot of them (R&B/Hip-Hop/Rap) go that route to me that is just pure lazy and stupid. Thats when music (like TODAY) sounds exactly the same!

Damn I miss the 90s music

    [Reply]

    bEEzy Reply:

@batman, if u do listen to the album you’ll hear it’s not all pop/dance/techno. Except for scream and maybe 2 other tracks, I think the songs on this album are very different from what’s taking over the radio right now. So yeah, your ‘euro pop’ argument applies for like 3 songs on this album. and also it’s very cohesive unlike raymond v raymond. He’s been in the game for a while now, don’t expect him to do the same thing over and over.

Really hard for these R&B artists these days to pull the 300k 1st week sales. I don’t know where their fans are but they’re not supporting. They all say the same thing “the music isn’t the same”. Just stop because you wouldn’t support anyway.

When they DO put out what you consider “real R&B” you call it bland and boring and you don’t buy it.

When they put out pop to get people’s attention you call it “selling out” and you don’t buy it. Whose gonna buy it then? POP fans? They started with R&B FANS. But where are they? Disappeared by the looks of things.

These #’s are very low for an Usher album but at the end of the day, a #1 album is a #1 album. It seems like a lot of people aren’t too thrilled with the material on this album either. I like a lot of the songs but I agree with the fact that some of the dance/pop songs could’ve been left off.

My favorite Usher album will forever be 8701. And I don’t see anything wrong with doing “Pop” music BUT I feel as if alot of these artist now a days forget what got them to the top in the 1st place.

Usher’s been out for a long time and this is the most “Pop” music i’ve ever seen him do. But either way if he’s doing “R&B” or “Pop” it wouldn’t matter because people aren’t really buying music now a days in this generation.

    [Reply]

    Lou Reply:

    @cOMEaTmEbRO, I’d have to agree.

    Nobody buys albums anymore.
When was the last time anybody has bought a hard copy of an album?
To add to that, when was the last time anybody has listened to an album top to bottom?

Personally, I bought the album and listened to it top to bottom.
After listening to it, I feel like he’s STILL R&B and a little Pop on the side.

R&B: “Climax”, “What Happened to U”, and “Dive”.

Pop: “Numb”, “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop”, and “Euphoria”.

Technically, we can’t say he isn’t R&B anymore and vice versa.

@Lou, R&B: You forgot “Lemme See”, “Twisted”, “Lessons for the Lover”, “Sins of the Father”, “I.F.U”, “Say the Words”, “2nd Round”, “Hot Thing”

    and Pop: “Scream”
    and pop/r&b: “I Care 4 U”, “Show Me”

Based on this I can’t see how some people are saying Usher fell off. 4 pop songs on an 18-track album and suddenly everyone wants his head on a stick. Really disappointed with these numbers. I bought the album BTW
