Cissy Houston and Divas Pay Tribute to Whitney Houston at BET Awards

Mariah Carey

The legendary Whitney Houston was remembered with a star-studded tribute at the BET Awards on Sunday. Mariah Carey fought back tears as she spoke about her friend and fellow diva. “The first time I heard Whitney Houston’s voice I was mesmerized like the rest of the world,” said Mariah.

One of the singers Whitney inspired most, Monica, brought down the house with the gospel hymn “I Love the Lord.” Her collaborator Brandy put her best foot forward with “I’m Your Baby Tonight” and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” Whitney’s brother Gary Houston was up next, singing “Where You Are” before making way for Whitney’s mother Cissy.

There was not a dry eye in the house as the 78-year-old matriarch performed “Bridge over Troubled Water.” “This is for you, Nip,” said Mrs. Houston.

Whitney’s Waiting to Exhale castmates Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon recalled memories of working with the singer-actress and Chaka Khan had everyone on their feet as she closed with “I’m Every Woman.”

This was the best tribute thus far. To say that Brandy “put her best foot forward” is a gross understatement. Brandy absolutely rocked! To dance like that and stay in tune the whole time? And the runs…? Chile please!!! Brandy is the most underrated singer of our time. I can see why Whitney adored her so much.

    Chet Reply:

@ASIPOFBRANDY, I’m not a hater and I wasn’t born in the 90s. Not everyone has to like everything an artist does. Jump off her clit already. I was just stating the obvious. She was doing too much and should of done way less. I know she was prob just excited but still lol. Carry on.

@Chet, Hater Alert! Liar Alert! People like you deny Brandy’s talent because you WANT to! It’s okay! Relevant and genuinely talented people know she’s a beast! She gave one of the best performances of the night, and the online community agrees. Deal with that.

Amazing tribute. Mariah was heartwarming. Brandy was phenomenal dancing while singing on key. She was really energetic to keep from getting emotional. It’s like having a lump in your throat to not cry. She was literally shaking it off to stick it through performance. Great job. Upbeat songs and dancing are not her signature thing but she proved she can do it. Gary Houston singing for his sister was classy, Monica showing the vocal advice and influences Whitney gave, Chaka tributing Whitney by doing a song she originated and of course Cissy Houston , singing for her daughter. So beautiful.
Everyone in the audience crying, Melanie Fiona (who had a great performance earlier in the night), Soulja Boy (who lost his little brother around this time last year and knew Whitney Houston in Atlanta, Beyonce, Elle Varner, Megan Good, etc etc. Moving tribute.

That damn Pat Houston! I remember when she told Oprah, “They told me Whitney was dead…and I walked, SLOWLY, down the hall.”

Is someone tells me MY sister-in-law is dead, I’m kicking my shoes off (a la Patti Labelle) and running THROUGH the wall!

This was classi. Monica def set the tone, Brandy brought energy, Gary was touching, Cissy was heartfelt/emotional

  20. twista

I appreciate Brandy’s energy, but her voice seemed too low to take on those particular songs. It’s as if the entire number was sung in one or two keys too low. Am I off base?

    [Reply]

    Kyle Reply:

@twista, no I agree with you. It’s tough though covering a Whitney song, especially with a tone like Brandy’s. I’m glad they included her though and I think she did really good and put her own “twist” on Whitney’s classics. Monica did amazing. I agree with one of the above comments; I wish she sung “You Give Good Love” or “Saving All My Love For You.” She would have done tore the house down.

@Kyle, I think they started with a gospel song to show that Gospel was Whitney’s roots and foundation. It was also her favourite genre.

    Kyle Reply:

@yipoao, except Melanie Fiona who had the best performance of the night. I’m glad they showed her rocking out during this tribute because I personally think Whitney would have been amazed during her performance of “Wrong Side of A Love Song.”

@CrunkHam, Brandy comes from the era of when you actually had to sing on key and not lip. People have got so caught up in the Rihanna’s and Ciara’s…they don’t know good vocalist when they see it. Too hard to believe lol

Everyone is entitled to their opinions but in mine…brandys part was pre recorded. So I didnt think much of her after that. I will say tho, that I could understand why she would do so seeing that her and Whit were really close, and maybe doing a live performance would have been too much for her to handle emotionally . I can understand. BUT I will say that miss Monica & Cissy Houston…had me in tears. So much power…so much emotion…so much coviction it was extremely moving…cudos to THEM!!

Im trying to understand why in the world people would think Brandy lip synced her part when there was a LIVE BAND and BACKUP SINGERS present? Who pre records vocals for a song that isn’t their own? Really? I can hear her taking breaths into the mic. She was clearly singing live. Thats why she’s in her lower register, where she’s more comfortable.

Whitney Houston her voice was amazing,Now her idol Monica Brown did her thang she was TOP NOTCH to the T,Brandy was a sad case she tired to hard, what i saw was a HOT MESS all t he way down to her hair ,appearance she look liked the scarecore on the wizard of oz,she was the only one with a jacket on was she sick, was sad about the whole thing ,people was dancing because it was Whitneys song, not Brandy.Truth is she should have done something that would have been a challenge for her voice,to let people she that she can sing, their nothing there beside her voice bening raspy she dont no how to use it CAN SHE SING?OOPS iI DONT THINK SO
