Frank Ocean Opens Up About His Sexuality![]() Frank Ocean is making a brave move. Following rumors about his sexuality, the “Novacane” singer has penned a “coming out” letter, in which he reveals to the world that he is gay.
At a listening session for his Def Jam debut Channel Orange, the 24-year-old raised questions of his sexuality with his lyrics directed towards a man. He addressed the rumors on Tuesday night with a post on his Tumblr page. “what i’m about to post is for anyone who cares to read,” he wrote. “it was intended to fill the thank you’s section in my album credits, but with all the rumors going round.. i figured it’d be good to clarify.” The New Orleans native speaks about a relationship he had with a man when he was 19. “It was my first love, it changed my life,” he said. He only told his secret to a few people at the time. “I don’t have any secrets I need kept anymore,” he continued. “Thanks. To my first love, I’m grateful for you.” Now that he has come out, he feels liberated. “Maybe it takes a near death experience to feel alive. Thanks. To my mother, you raised me strong. I know I’m only brave because you were first.. so thank you. All of you. For everything good. I feel like a free man. If I listen closely.. I can hear the sky falling too.” His Odd Future cohort Tyler, the Creator voiced his support. “My Big Brother Finally Fucking Did That,” he tweeted. “Proud Of That Ni**a Cause I Know That Shit Is Difficult Or Whatever.” His manager Kelly Clancy echoed the sentiments. “ive had a million proud moments in my career…this one falls at the top…” Read his full letter below. ![]() You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site. 235 CommentsLeave a Reply

@Cr00ks94, Finally the heavens have open…the gay Gods are looking down on us. It’s surprising yet exhilarating for someone from the hip hop/ r&b culture to finally come to terms with their sexuality and is brave enough to admit to the world. The hip hop culture can be quite ignorant and close minded when it comes to ones sexuality that is anything other than straight. I love his music and this dosen’t change my love for it…i hope that other gay/lesbian rappers follow in his footsteps to end all this animosity towards each other esp in back/latino community… this is 2012. who are we to tare down someone else..let live and be live. @Cr00ks94, I find it funny that people are so “understanding” about this and making allowances for it (though I also agree that it’s not for me to judge him based on his sexuality, especially have close friends who are gay and a best friend who is gay), but take exception to other people merely existing. All these Ciara vs Keri and Nicki M. vs Lil Kim and Beyonce vs the world comments on this site, with people arguing about it like they’re getting paid for it, and yet people turn around and suddenly are sympathetic and understanding. Hmm… I could go on but it’s pointless, I know.

@Drew, He doesn’t “like dick”. He loved a guy. One guy, and was honest enough with himself to admit it. He didn’t mention if he looks at guys in general a different way after. They didn’t even have sex. They both liked girls beforehand. So if a guy likes girls, and realizes that he likes a guy, then what else would that make him?
[Reply]
cOMEaTmEbRO Reply:

@Drew, So does that mean a female can be bi? You can’t determine what he likes no matter if it’s male, female, or both.
If he likes both then he has the right because it’s something HE choose.

@cOMEaTmEbRO, Females fool around all the time and can still end up being straight, find me some men who enjoyed being f*cked by a male and then ended up being straight. It doesn’t happen. And he never even said he was ‘bi’, he said he was with a girl BEFORE he realized his sexual preference. He realized he’s gay and won’t be turning back lol

@Drew, it’s socially acceptable for girls to fool around with other girls but not for guys to fool around with other guys because of discriminatory people like you.
guys aren’t allowed to explore their preferences because they’re judged right away by people like you, yet girls can explore all they want. the world would be so much better without prejudice people like you.

@cOMEaTmEbRO, It’s completely different for women lol every girl has atleast one ‘female crush’ or a chick they would ‘turn lesbian for’, girls are always perving and checkin’ out other girls. But if a guy has a male crush on another dude, perves, and would literally ‘turn gay for them’ well…. 9/10 they ARE gay, not ‘bi’.

You can’t speak on somebodies “sexual preference” because you aren’t them! If a girl fools around with another chick but still likes dude’s then what does that make her? Obviously “Bisexual” because she had to be curious in some type of way in order to mess with the same sex. Same factor with Guy’s as well.

Our R&B singers would be people like Trey Songz, Chris Brown, Frank Ocean, etc. I’m not saying those men are any better or worse then the ones you mentioned, it’s just that those are our generation of R&B singers.

Your religion is teaching people to live a lie. To choose being unhappy and dishonest over being happy and honest. Especially when he’s boldly using male pronouns. I’m glad he doesn’t have to wear the burden anymore. But it does matter to me and on a personal note it conflicts heavily with my own beliefs. Just keeping it real.

What I got from his letter wasn’t that he was gay. but that at some point in his life he was confused about his sexuality, and he speaks about that expierence on his new album. And he wants to be honest about the experience instead of hiding it. In the letter he never actually said he did anything sexual with the gay. He said that he fell in love with a dude and when he opened up about it he found out the dude had a girlfriend. And he considers heartbreaking just like he would with a girl. Basically what i’m saying is that he was saying that he is bi/or confused. He likes woman but that one guy still counts as someone he felt the same/or greater feelings for. I’m straight and i’m still buying though

I wish people would understand bisexuality is not about who you have sex with, but who you fall in LOVE with and who you’re ATTRACTED to. As a bi man, I think it’s very courageous of him to break the stereotype of men can’t be part of the LGBT community in hip-hop. Also, to the people saying “if a man has sex with a man, he’s gay”, that is ridiculous. You can have sex with a bean bag chair, that doesn’t make you a beanbagchair-sexual. It all depends who you can see yourself being in a relationship with. A straight women can bang a chick to get her rocks off, but she’s still going to be thinking about d**k in the morning.

@JesusLoves, True. People think they’re above God so that’s why they feel free to make whatever allowances suit their situations, etc. What bothers me about this is Odd Future themselves. It’s very disappointing that this is the direction people are going in, with so much hatred towards women and self-hatred towards one’s own race. So how am I supposed to turn around and commend one of their members (I don’t care if it’s not him saying those things; he’s connected to them since they are friends and therefore it’s at least a non-verbal co-sign) for coming out??? They say/act like it’s no big deal but it’s so self-(as in the race itself) destructive and damaging not just to them but to US. So ridiculous how in these comments I’ve seen people rip women to shreds arguing/insulting strangers (both commenter and celebrities) or making racist comments, but in this situation they’re miraculously generous. It’s a funny world we live in.

There was a time when only Priest were aloud to read the bible and regular folk were not. For all we know these high church officials could have changed the bible to what they wanted. i could be wrong but either way i hate when people quote the bible like they are saints.

Churches back in the day was just as(or more) corrupt as todays Government. I honestly believe that somewhere down the line some corrupt church members changed words of God to their liking. At one point Slave Masters used the Bible to justify slavery. I’m not saying that the bible is wrong. what i’m saying is that I don’t know what is right, and what is wrong. so i just don’t listen to anything in the bible and follow my own beliefs on whats right and whats wrong. but I still love God

I don t see where god said that men are on earth to reproduce. That s not the truth. He even said that a man can be single if he doesn t wan t to be married.
I don t understand why people say that is brave to reveal a kind of sexuality.
Some people don t wanna reveal their sexuality : because it s a lot of problems and negativity that comes with a coming out.
So i beleive that not to say is not coward on the other hand.
Everyone is free to reveal or not : we can t judge.
And to all God people : to judge is clearly an sin.
U can have an opinion, and truely beleive in it, but to judge and reject someone that has been create by god is clearly a sin.

Frank Ocean is a great music artist, and a great R&B singer. Frank Ocean is a very, talented music artist. I give Frank Ocean major props for coming out and admitting that he is bisexual. I could care less about Frank Ocean’s sexual preference, as long as the music is great, this is coming from an unbiased music fan like myself who is a christian and believes in marriage between a man and a woman. If Frank Ocean wants to continue living the bi-sexual lifestyle, that is his own business. There are probably several rappers and singers in the Hip Hop/R&B community who are either gay, lesbian, or bisexual, and scared to come out because they feel they are going to lose all their street credit. I would never discriminate against anyone based on their preferences. I am looking forward to Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange Album, this is going to be one of the best music albums of the year.

I find it laughable that anyone would think that it was a publicity stunt. Even though he doesn’t rap, he is still involved in the hip-hop community, which is NOTORIOUS for its homophobia. His coming out was actually one of the bravest things he could ever do, and I applaud him for that.
