Frank Ocean to Release ‘channel ORANGE’ Tonight

Channel Orange

Frank Ocean has another big surprise in store for his fans. According to whispers in the Twittersphere, the Odd Future crooner will release his long-awaited Def Jam debut channel ORANGE to iTunes tonight.

Ocean revealed the unexpected news during a taping of “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” earlier today. The talk show host had teased a “big announcement” as well. Several fans who were in the audience leaked the news to Twitter following the taping.

“Am I allowed to say? Frank Ocean’s album is out TONIGHT on iTunes, at 12:30 AM when Fallon airs. Smart move,” wrote Lindsey, a fan who attended Monday’s taping.

Ocean’s manager Kelly Clancy also tweeted, “i wouldn’t miss frank ocean on fallon tonight…trust me… ‪#channelorange‬.”

The album’s early digital release comes a week before it was originally scheduled to arrive on July 17. Physical copies still won’t hit stores until then.

During his appearance on “Late Night,” Ocean also performed “Bad Religion,” a song off channel ORANGE that raised questions about his sexuality.

The 17-track follow-up to 2011’s nostalgia, ULTRA. features André 3000 (“Pink Matter”), Earl Sweatshirt (“Super Rich Kids”), and John Mayer (“White”).

UPDATE: channel ORANGE is available now on iTunes.

Why is everyone making a big deal just bcuz he came out…i mean if he was gay maybe, but this guy sleeps with women without them having a choice that he goes both ways, yes some women would still do him after coming out but some would want to know just to have a choice too….and we wonder why women are not into getting married or even trying to treat men like they matter, cuz this is men we have to deal with in 2012

@MinajRules2012, i’m truly disappointed you’re so ignorant. this dude who has yet to release his first official album has come out to the world amidst a homophobic and critical hip hop community. that takes some big balls and could potentially be the death of his aspiring career.
Having said that, his legitimacy both in his music as well as how he carries himself is rare in artists these days. especially artists like your namesake. i’m offended you think this is a gimmick, especially since nicki’s whole music career is based on a schizophrenic, exaggerated character with a terrible case of turrets.

But it’s harder to imagine an openly gay male rapper being embraced, people view gay men as having no street credibility. But I think we’ll see one in my lifetime.” “

@MinajRules2012, you can stream his entire album for free on his tumblr. Frank Ocean does not seem the type of artist to do such a thing. I think he came out, because it gives us a better understanding of his lyrics. Regardless if he would have stayed in the closet, people would stil jump on this album. It was anticipated long before all of this. That’s because Frank is an amazing artist and sticks out with head and shoulders. He is just that guy. Point, blank, period.

Not a big fan of his, i would of rather him shut his mouth than to had say something all this gay publicity has already started to alter the way things work. Early album release and all the media press it would be a sin in entertainment to waste such free publicity.

Idk why people care about whether or not it’s a publicity stunt. At the end of the day an artist’s job is to sell records and no matter how much you hate it by getting your name in the press you’re helping your own cause. Deal with it and just enjoy the music.

I think he’s releasing it on itunes for streaming just to combat the leak of the album, which will probably be soon since the album physically comes out in a week anyway. Chris Brown did the same thing with his album.

I don’t see how straight men can listen to thinking of you or much of the album knowing it is likely about another guy. I’m not judging but this is too different from how he came out and what odd future talks about on record. Maybe this happens more than I know and again not judging but for me as a straight guy I don’t want to have music I listen to not to mesh with me as a person. I can’t relate and feel lied to on some level. I’m not cutting just frank bc I think that would be wrong but in cutting all of odd future. I still think all will be successful probably but this subject matter isn’t what I relate to in music. I don’t watch guy guy adult films I think of it te same way, to each their own.

    [Reply]

    Zor Reply:

@J, So listening to a song about killing, selling drugs and expensive this and that is what you can relate to? I’m straight also, but I can listen to Mary J Blidge and feel fine. Listen to the album, it’s a great piece of work. You questioned yourself a lot in the post, I think it’s time for you to post an open letter.

    [Reply]

    Beauty Reply:

    @J,

“but this subject matter isn’t what I relate to in music”

The “subject matter” in Frank Ocean’s music is LOVE, RELATIONSHIPS (including the one you have with yourself), and LIFE! Surely, WE ALL can relate to that! No matter who or what we love (woman, man, family, money, false GODS, etc.), no matter the type (professional, personal, intimate, etc.) of relationship, no matter our circumstances or experiences in life – WE CAN ALL RELATE TO THE SUBJECT MATTER!

Frank Ocean is about as REAL as an artist can be in mainstream music these days. He told you, as best as he could approximate to your face, who he is and what he’s about. He didn’t lie to you. He didn’t try to do a cover up. He said it. He recorded it. And he put it out there for all the world to hear (and sadly judge). WHO DOES THAT NOWADAYS?!?!? No one (of his stature in his genre of music)! That’s who. Also, about you feeling “lied to” by Frank and Odd Future – they tried to tell you already. YouTube OFWGKTA – “Oldie” (Odd Future Tape Vol. 2). Around the 5:15 mark (when Frank is on) Frank says, “I’m high and I’m bi, wait I mean straight.” So it’s not like he didn’t try to tell us before. It’s just that now he has his own project, he can open and freely do – and say – what he wants now without it affecting a collective. So when he specifically has a man on his mind as the object of his emotions, he says so. If he doesn’t, then it’s probably a female – or the gender is irrelevant (as it should be).

90% of what’s played on the radio has to do with non-stop wild and free partying, driving expensive cars, dating models, spending outrageous amounts of money at the strip club/bar, flying private jets, spending time at exotic locales, murdering people, selling/using illegal drugs, having abundant sex with sexually available beautiful women without any consequence of pregnancy, STDs, emotional involvement/commitment (on either end), and excessive drinking (without the risk of becoming an alcoholic). MOST people who listen to the songs that display this can’t relate to that life, the people depicted in it, or the subject matter in general (excess without consequence). MOST people don’t wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy (Ke$ha), or own Maybachs and listen to Maybach Music while they drive them (Rick Ross), or are serial killing, drug dealers/robbers with model girlfriends who are also serial killing, drug dealers/robbers who are willing to take the fall for their man and wait decades for them when they’re put behind bars (just about any rapper).

I love Frank Ocean for what he’s doing in music as well as for his own personal growth and happiness. FEW of us can be so bold, courageous, candid, vulnerable and secure in the face of public scrutiny and life’s work/career endangerment! I will be supporting his album, both on iTunes and at Best Buy on July 17th!
