Jennifer Lopez Quits ‘American Idol,’ Mariah Carey in ‘Serious Talks’ to Judge

Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey

Jennifer Lopez is leaving “American Idol.” After two seasons on the hit show, the singer-actress has decided to call it quits.

“I honestly feel like the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do, that I put on hold because I love ‘Idol’ so much,” the 42-year-old superstar told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS FM radio show. “I could do ‘Idol’ for the rest of my life, but that would be giving up a bunch of other things. We had an amazing run.”

Lopez, who will kick off her North American tour with Enrique Iglesias on Saturday, wants to get back to focusing on movies, music, and her family. “I have my movies and my music and my this and my that,” she continued. “It all kind of worked together for a while, but then it gets more complicated. As the kids are getting a little bigger, it started feeling like it was a lot. Something has to give. And that’s, I think, where I am right now.”

Fellow judge Steven Tyler also announced his departure from the Fox singing competition on Thursday, and there is speculation that veteran Randy Jackson will be leaving after 11 seasons.

J.Lo’s fellow diva Mariah Carey is in negotiations to take a seat at the judges’ table. “She’s in play,” sources tell PEOPLE. “They are in serious talks.”

KWEEN Mariah. It would be nice, but she needs ample rest for a great vocal performance. I don’t wont her overworked and tired performances with this new album coming soon.

I’d prefer to see Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj on the panel. That would be amazing.

Mariah is too legendary to be a judge on basic a** American Idol. They need to just let it go.

I’d prefer if she DOESN’T end up on American Idol. The QUEEN is too legendary for that show. Her new album is going to slay everyone anyway so what’s the point? GODriah will remain perched and unbothered.

Mariah put this album out. I feel like her time for judging has passed. She truly has music expertise but if she was to do this, the last 2 years were her chance. I’m ready for the multi platinum superstar to return.

They should just quit. American Idol has ben going on for too long now anyway and I’m sick of it. The X Factor and the Voice are good enough.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!! I was sick of J-Lo’s endless endorements. She wasn’t in it to find new talent, it was just to kick start her failing career. Which it did.
If Mariah doesn’t sign on, they better kill the show. It boring already.

J.LO is leaving bc the whole point, IMO, was to get her back out there. Now she’s over it. Smart business move. I just hate to see the constant change of judges.

I think they should just let Idol go. They have to replace two judges now, maybe three and the ratings will fall. I think X Factor and The Voice is enough for singing competition shows.

I would actually watch AI if Mariah were a judge. Mariah is a legend and I would love to hear her insight and critiques. She definitely one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all-time! :)
