Hot on the heels of her No. 1 EP Armor On and in celebration of her 1 million Twitter followers, Dawn Richard marches forward with her full-length debut Goldenheart, the first in a trilogy of albums, dropping October 16. The former Dirty Money member introduces us to the sound of the project with “Pretty Wicked Things.” Produced and co-written by Armor On collaborator Druski, the haunting track is available on iTunes.
“It’s the story of the beautiful things in life that get ruined by the wicked,” explains Dawn. “Goldenheart is the fusing of new sounds with R&B/soul. We are introducing the setup to Goldenheart with the release of ‘Pretty Wicked Things.’ This isn’t a single. It’s a setup. We have a lot of surprises for the hearts. Grow with us.”

@Shaytan, It’s alright to have your own opinions, but Dawn supports Nicki. And I personally am a fan of both. Of course I prefer Dawn to Nicki, but Nicki is talented, imo. Heart music is trying to dead all of the hate and negative. Just let them do them. If they want to hate, let them. But we have our armor on, and we can’t let it get to us. IT’s the focal point of Dawn’s battle, after all.

dawn is sexy talented and dope but to be honest she hasnt delivered a smash yet, her ep is dope, and her visuals too, and i can respect that she trys to push the boundaries of the current state of music however everytime she drops a single something just seems to be missin, the lyrics are dope, the beats are dope but they dont seem to ever really coinside with each other. i think she needs to work with more established songwriters and producers and focus more on gaining management from a respected music exec. “faith has alot of potential” to do some things but i think she needs realize that releasing music is cool but all it really takes one smash to change a life ie “umbrella” “call me maybe” justin bieber “baby” once she gets that smash though mainstream will eat her creativity up, and record companies will be dieing to sign her. but in current state of theindustry were urban music/sales are dieing she has to prove she can be a brand beyond intune sales, and brand new twitter followers, she needs to seen as an organic artist with an extreme commercial appeal

Rodney Jerkins did it on Justin Biebers “As long as you love me”, you not doing anything new Dawn, so stop acting like you are doing something special. Just put the music out and let it speak for itself. From a fan btw so no hate here just honesty

@mus, She never said she was creating any sort of new genre.
And yes, mixing dubstep with vocals is NOT new at all, and many have done it. However, Dawn ISN’T just mixing dubstep with vocals.
She’s experimenting with chord progressions and harmonies that many wouldn’t go near. She’s not writing about the current themes of sex or gettin drunk at the club; she writes about love, the battles she faces in her life, and loves to juxtapose many things against each other. When many try to create a familiar sound, she challenges people with a different sound, and shows you how different things can go together.
She is NOT just mixing vocals and dubstep.
She is in her own lane.

Just saw a video of Brandy performing ‘Put it down’ live, two female bgd’s and dancing…. at one point she says “I can shake my booty too”….
I saw what Brandy said on twitter, but I know she can be shady a shit… I don’t know what to make of this.

@anon, It’s crazy people compare dawn to an artist that’s been in the game a minute. Like veterans. That speaks volumes about dawn. And if shade was thrown. Just means Dawn got them trying save they spot ! Go off dawn

@anon, Dawn would slay brandys life on the dance floor. Brandy is 15 years in this game. U can’t try and dance young now two different styles. Dawn is a dancer

I love Dawn, I love her voice, I love her style — I’m a fan of hers PERIOD! But my only critique (and I mean this as CONSTRUCTIVE criticism — so all you haters of Dawn and go eat my toes and get a life!!!) is this: lately, her songs don’t have enough “stickiness” — meaning, it takes several listens before you can remember them, and sing along with it. “Bombs Away” is a great exception — which is why I think that song was such a big hit! That hook had us HOOKED halfway through the song! (That’s my jam!!)
I know you’re an MJ fan Dawn — and I remember hearing Michael say the key to a great [hit] song is great melody which sticks in your head and can be caught by the middle of the song.
I also heard David Foster say something similar — you need to be able to play along with the melody with one finger by the end of the song — or something like that.
So Dawn — if you can somehow keep that in the back of your head, as you continue with your new album, that would be awesome. Your first mixtape embodied this perfectly — and I still love your songs now. They just sound more like soundtracks for movies, as opposed to songs people singalong to — which is cool too. But again – if you want us to rock with you with those songs, just add a little more stickability to the hooks and then it’ll be perfect.
Either way, I love you Dawn!!! And you are theBOMB.com!

@Suzie, I get what you’re saying. Dawn doesn’t write punchy pretty songs with catchy lyrics (Kalenna has that skill to a T) she even said Diddy told her this when they were writing for LTTP and that’s why you heard more Kalenna than Dawn on that record. Dawn writes like a poet or a spoken work artist, if she put all her songs together I believe she’d have a best seller on her hands. Her skill for painting intelligently crafted ans structurally complex songs is a gift and a hindrance, she hasn’t (yet) mastered the art of simplifying her need for complex story telling that instantly sticks in your head without sacrificing her lyrical content. She hasn’t figured out how to dumb it down but use the odd metaphor ADELE styley.
UGLY was a great blend of this and she’ll need to find that again before the masses can fully understand her. If you can’t sing along to it after one listen it is not going to catch and if it doesn’t catch you can’t grab the listener.

@anon, This and the repeated use of vocal affects can be a off putting to the listener. She is going to have to mix it up and give a rich vocal T-Pain – Fantasy style just so that people don’t dismiss her vocal ability all together.

@Suzie, I definitely do agree with you. Dawn is becoming one of my faves. I only have a few critiques of Dawn, and this is one.
I will say that though her lyrics don’t necessarily stick, her melodies do. Wild N Young is another exception for her. I can recall the words and the melody of the chorus easily.
With this song, I find myself whistling the melody to this song in my head, though a lot, I can’t recall the words. And that’s just as important.
SO I would say she’s getting better. Though it’s not her biggest strength, I wouldn’t fault her for this.

@Suzie, Dawn is a poet but honestly. Adele had deep lyrics. Frank ocean as well Florence Nd the machine. 3 different genres. But a great song is a great song. I never know what Janet or Michael or prince was saying. But the songs were classic.

@Amy loveeee, I totally get what you’re saying. Heck, I still don’t know the words to the chorus of MJ’s “Thriller” or half of his songs for that matter! Lol But he wrote them in a way that the structure and melody stuck in your head – even if the exact lyrics didn’t.
So like Anon and the rest of you said (and I agree) — if she can learn to simplify SOME of her lyrics so they can stick – like UGLY (I loved that song too!) – then I think she’ll be set. She can keep the abstract and poetic songs too – but she needs a few songs that are simpler – without it comprising her message or delivery.
I believe in her and I know she can do it! I’ll still rock with her either way. I genuinely want her to WIN, that’s all. She’s too amazing to not have the world recognize her greatness! #DawnFanForLife

She is doing the absolute right thing with this track. Needs to loose the crazy high pitch at the end, this is not for you urbanite, R&B lovers, this is for the white folks dem. This is mainstream/underground epicness that could catch the attention of the (finacially supportive) public and a market she needs to reach to get the attention of labels.

Dawn is an unsigned artist who steady gets upwards of 100 comments every post. The fact that She released a song, same day as an artist she champions every interview, (JoJo) a signed artist and the two of them are creating such buzz???

@Gene, What’s also great about dawn is she always gives other artist their props. Like you said she skies live to Jojo Brandy and others but she is just as amazing as them. If not better based on the fact she is a dancer writer performer. I mean we know dawn can write a commercial record. Look at DK. Lights out. Striptease. Etc. and dirty money loving you no more. And her mistape. Vibrate and champion. Biggest fan. Dawn is it
