Missy Elliott and Timbaland Sound Off on Drake-Aaliyah Collaboration

Missy Elliott and Timbaland

While promoting her new singles, Missy Elliott was bombarded with questions about the posthumous Aaliyah album. She and Timbaland shared their thoughts on Drake’s role and why they won’t be involved.

Earlier this summer, Blackground Records tapped Drake and Noah “40” Shebib to executive produce the project, but Timbo has his doubts about the whole thing. “I don’t think that’s even in the works,” he told Angie Martinez on Hot 97. “I think it’s blown out of proportion.”

Neither Missy nor Timbo has spoken to Drake, but they respect the wishes of Aaliyah’s family. “My response would be a little different because I have to respect her family and until they come and say we’re ready to do an Aaliyah album, then I don’t really want to try and get into that because it’s really sensitive,” explained Missy.

She also isn’t sure if Aaliyah would want her unfinished recordings released. “We’re talking about unfinished music and we don’t know her reasoning for not putting those records out,” said Missy. “Maybe she didn’t feel like they were her best work. We don’t want to tap into that. It’s spiritually something else, very, very touchy—unless her parents came in and conducted that.”

While Timbaland questioned Drake’s Aaliyah tattoos, Missy was more understanding. “He’s a human being too and a lot of people might not have met Michael Jackson, but feel a connection with him.”

–That statement is so true missy and tim. knew her way more then drake so they how who she will feel if songs she herself wasn’t feeling got released so that one reason not to make anaaliyah album, 2nd reason is her own fam. doest what him to do it…like drake and whoever is part of this project got some kind of nerve.

…3rd reason why this album shouldnt be done by drake is because you already know drakes tired ass is going to have this whole album sound like his sound…drakes slow instrumewntal all song the same…. 4th and final reason, u know his ass is going to be ft. on every track talk nonsense like that one he already put out…

    @haha,
I’m not saying he should or shouldn’t be doing the album. I’m saying you can’t fault him for wanting to do it.
He is a new musician. HSomeone approached him for the job. A normal musician would be more than excited to take the job. Everyone on here is calling him a loser and a creep for doing something any normal person would want to do. if you want to blame anybody blame her uncle. And Beside, i don’t think he will be featured on every track. probally like 2 or 3.

And this isn’t anything new. They released Biggie, Tupac, MJ, and Jimi Hendrix music after they died. I’m not saying thats right, but how is Drake to blame for Aaliyah music being released. He is just an excited fan excited to hear her unreleased music, just like everyone else. Her Uncle is the one that is suppos to be respectful and mature with the music

If ya’ll haven’t noticed by now, Drake is the biggest ass kisser in hiphop, the dude wants to be loved by everyone. That’s the only reason why he is doing this Aaliyah thing, he is trying to tap into the Aaliyah fanbase to lengthen his career.

Lil Wayne does the same thing, that whole YMCMB are a bunch of leaches. They see a movement and try to tap into it, Lil Wayne did it with that blood culture, the skateboarding culture, etc.

You guys are stupid. Drake has been an Aaliyah fan ever since he started making music. You guys don’t know drake, and your opinion doesn’t matter either. I think Drake should do it because him and Aaliyah compose the same type of music, in which they talk about the problems that they’re dealing with. I’m tired of hearing music about drugs, money, and girls. Let Drake do it. And it’s not about the money and the fame. It’s about Aaliyah and her fans. Chill out you guys

sometimes people music and entire existence or some artist get to people more then you could ever understand so who are yall to judge and call somebody weird
i understand them for respecting the wishes of the family but drake didn’t not hunt this opportunity down it was introduced to him by a family member PERIOD.

for some of yall to implement that drake isn’t talented if pure foolery…yes he has a distinct sound but you cant tell me aaliyah didn’t have a mellow slow sound too

most artist have there signature sound but that doesn’t make it bad…yall hyping this shyt up like drake is purposely trying to sabotage aailyah’s legacy..funny thing is if he does do this album most of the songs will prolly reach number 1 on the billboards with you lames knowing every word

Drake seriously has an unhealthy obsession with Aaliyah. It’s unfortunate that Aaliyah’s family does NOT have the rights to Aaliyah’s music catalog, nor do they support any ‘NEW’ Aaliyah material being released. If a new album was being produced than Timbaland & Missy or people who actually knew her should be involved in the project, along with the approval from Aaliyah’s family. RIP Aaliyah

For CHRIST SAKE PEOPLE! Stop the madness. Aaliyah was a very talented artist whom i believe would be delighted on the fact that drake released her music to the knew era. Im sure timbaland and missy respect and loved her just the same but one shouldnt excuse the high possibility that they may be somewhat jealous that drake released new music before they did. However and understandind the circumstances, i do respect that missy and timbaland are following the familys wishes. Aaliyah is resting in peace and her legacy should live on. Both songs by Drake and Chris were Great! Forever Aaliyah Dana Haughton

The only issues I see with it is if he cared so much for her like he claims then why do a project her family and friends are clearly against? Why not respect their wishes and not do it? And the other issue is why release her unreleased music to begin with? Don’t get me wrong, I wanna hear those tracks as much as the next Aaliyah fan, but they were not released for a reason, and we dono her reasonings behind not releasing them.
